31. Chapter 31
Iglance around the dimly-lit corridor, my pulse drumming in my ears. As far as Gerald”s concerned, we”re on a school trip, an overnight stay at the children”s museum.
I even drove us to the school in case his goons were following us, lugging in sleeping bags and other items on the list the teachers had prepared.
But, under the guise of darkness, we made our excuses with the school, feigning Yara”s fear at having to spend the night away from her precious creature comforts.
Now, we”re far away in a covert location with the one man who could possibly save us.
The shadows seem to creep and curl around us as we huddle together, their smothering darkness both shielding us and heightening the tension coiled in my muscles.
Yara”s voice trembles slightly as she asks, ”Will it really be like the movies, Mr. Agent Morello?”
He smiles, the gesture warm and reassuring on his usually serious face. ”Better. Because we”re writing our own ending, kiddo.”
I can”t help the swell of affection as I watch Morello”s interaction with my daughter. He”s so gentle, so patient with her questions. It”s a side I never expected to see from the intense agent.
”We”ve got one shot at this.” Morello”s voice hardens, expression somber once more. ”Everything”s got to go just right.”
His finger traces an invisible path on his phone”s screen, mapping out the route we must take to escape Gerald”s far-reaching grasp. Adrenaline surges through me, equal parts fear and anticipation. We”re in this together now, bonded by our shared mission.
I meet Morello”s gaze, reading the promise there. He”ll keep us safe or die trying.
Something powerful passes between us in that loaded moment, speaking of possibilities beyond this dark night.
Morello”s hand brushes against mine as he points out the last checkpoint, a jolt of electricity sparking at the contact.
”We”ll get through this,” he says softly, holding my gaze. I nod, my throat tightening with hope tinged with an unexpected attraction.
He leans back, the hint of a playful smile teasing his lips as he launches into an animated retelling of a past escapade. Yara”s eyes widen, a delighted laugh escaping her as Morello regales us with the daring tale.
The sound of my daughter”s laughter in this dim, tense space is like a ray of light piercing the darkness. I can”t help but join in, the genuineness of my smile startling after so long spent locked in fear.
For a fleeting moment, we are simply three friends sharing a story, the danger ahead forgotten.
As we sober, the weight of our task settles once more. But we stand together now, bonded.
Morello”s eyes burn with quiet ferocity as he swears, ”I will protect you both, no matter what comes. You have my word.
His vow resonates through me. While Yara is preoccupied with a game on her phone, I find a private moment, needing him to know what this means.
”Thank you,” I whisper, ”for giving me hope again. For giving me the strength to fight back.”
We stand so close. It would be so easy to close the distance... but Yara”s approach startles us apart, the spell broken.
Disappointment wars with relief inside me at the interruption.
But this isn”t the time or place to explore the pull between us. Escape comes first.
The night envelops us like a cloak as we make our final preparations, concealed from watchful eyes.
We speak in hushed tones, reviewing the plan, synchronizing each minute.
No detail is too small—our window to slip these chains will be narrow.
Yara checks her backpack one last time, nerves and excitement playing across her face. She glances at me, doubt flickering in her eyes. ”Will we really make it, Mama?”
I squeeze her hand, pushing down my own uncertainties. ”We will. I promise.”
Morello finishes loading the truck, every movement precise and purposeful. He turns to us, resolve etched on his features. ”It”s time.”
As we walk to the truck, Morello and I share a loaded look. One that speaks of trust, of possibility. Of a future neither of us dared hope for until now.
My heart is heavy with the perilous road ahead, but lighter knowing I won”t walk it alone.
I watch Morello drive away, Yara sleeping soundly beside me.
I gently wake her and we head back to the mansion while it”s still dark outside, navigating by the school to gather our sleepover items and making apologies for our early departure the previous evening.
Dawn will fully break soon, and with it, our bid for freedom. I close my eyes, allowing myself to imagine the life that could be waiting on the other side of this darkness. A life unbound by fear, filled with light—and maybe even love.
