Chapter 17

Caroline

Something had gone horribly wrong with her plans.

Caroline sat alone in her room, aware that a footman guarded the door and would not allow her to leave. She contemplated how she had come to be thwarted, just as she had been almost assured of victory.

She should have found a better hiding place—that was it! It seemed that a false bottom on a trunk was something people thought to check for. Perhaps, if she had one of those tricky writing desks….

But never mind that! The important thing, now, was to plan how to get out of her current situation….

Charles had informed her that she would be sent north to live with relatives. He claimed that her own sister agreed with the arrangement. But she knew better. She just needed to figure out how to appeal to Louisa, and indeed how to work on Charles. And to do that, she must make some plans.

She got busy, concocting plots and schemes, including alternatives to cover every possible contingency….
