CHAPTER 14
BLESS
T hankfully, I woke up before my alarm went off Tuesday morning. The first light of dawn peeked through the curtains, causing my eyes to squint as I looked around the room. My eyes landed on the arch of Legacy’s large, muscular back as he lay on his side next to me. Admiring him, the events from the previous night came rushing back, causing my clit to pulsate with greed and excitement.
But as I realized that the kids would soon be up, I started to panic. “Legacy, wake up,” I whispered urgently, shaking his shoulder.
He stirred slowly as his eyes blinked open in confusion. “What’s up?”
God, even his morning voice was sexy as hell. I hadn’t heard that deep sweetness so close, in my bed in so long that it caught me off guard. My breath hitched before I could go on.
“It’s time for me to wake the kids up for school,” I explained. “They can’t see you in here.”
Groggy and confused, his brows curled. “Why not?”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “I don’t want to confuse them.”
His expression turned to one of disappointment, though he tried to hide it. “All right.”
As I tried to read his expression, he climbed out of bed. He sleepily looked around the room for his clothes. As he located his shirt, I admired the tall, broad build of his dark brown body. I remembered him holding me up with those thick, long legs as he carried me into the room, kissing me deeply.
But as I watched him, I noticed the defeat in his orbs as he focused on looking for the rest of his clothes.
I bit my lip, trying to find the right words. I didn’t know what to say or what last night had meant or what I wanted it to mean. He had professed his love for me, that he always had loved me. I wanted to reciprocate, tell him that I had never stopped loving him. But I owed him more truth than I was ready to reveal at that moment. And I was still the scorned woman who had experienced every effect of his addiction. I was still timid, scared that he would fall victim to his demons again at any moment. Fright held my tongue hostage, muting me.
Before I could say anything, he looked at me with that gaze that always seized me. “Do you want me to leave or I can just help you get them ready and take them to school.”
I nodded slowly. “You can stay.”
“Cool,” he replied, but I could still see the disappointment lingering in his gaze as he searched the room. Then he spat, “Shit. My jeans and shoes are in the living room.”
I watched him inch towards the closed door. I wanted to say something. I needed to say something . But I couldn't say how I felt without telling him everything. If we finally had a chance to rekindle, I couldn’t start by continuing to hide the truth about Riley. So, I remained silent as he slipped out of the bedroom, quietly closing the door behind him.
I plopped back down on the bed, groaning into my blanket. I had waited years to experience Legacy again, and now that I had, I thought I would be in bliss. But my heart was torn between the past and the future, and what last night had even meant.
I was more confused than ever.
