Chapter 11
Kelly
It had been two days since I last saw Gideon and had our rocking good time in his truck. Even just thinking of him, my lady parts tingled. I missed him. Missed him a lot and couldn’t wait until I saw him again.
While I was doing my twelve-hour shifts at the hospital, he’d been busy with club stuff. Things he wouldn’t tell me about on the phone when we briefly talked before I crashed out for the night. I sensed it had to do with the person who drugged Cass, although nobody had told me any of the details.
Speaking of Cass, she and I connected on social media and chatted. It had been fun getting to know her and receiving her book recommendations during my breaks. I liked her just as Gideon said I would.
I unlocked my front door and dragged myself into my apartment, utterly dead on my feet.
We were shorthanded today. Two nurses didn’t show up for their shifts, and I worked three extra hours to help cover.
I didn’t appreciate them leaving us high and dry.
The least they could have done was call in.
But they were young, fresh out of college and besties, so they probably went out partying last night and were dealing with hangovers.
Oh, to be so young and not have a care in the world. Not that being thirty, my age, wasn’t young, but they were like babies.
“Dang, you look awful,” Kevin said from the sofa.
“Thanks. Working fifteen hours is hard on the body. Did you eat dinner?”
“Yep. GQ dropped off some Mexican food. It’s warming in the oven. Hopefully, it’s good. We thought you’d be home at your usual time.”
“That was so nice of him.” I made a sad face, wishing I could have seen him. “This must have been the surprise he was talking about.” I went straight to the kitchen, snatched the oven mitt off the counter, and took out a stone plate covered in foil. It smelled amazing.
“He said it’s Mama Virgie’s famous enchiladas. That they’re better than the ones at Tequila’s Taqueria.”
“Oh, that’s funny.” I grabbed a fork from the drawer and went to join my brother on the sofa. “It’s my understanding that all of the recipes for the restaurant are Mama Virgie’s.” Just a little detail I learned from Gideon on one of our phone calls.
“Not those, though.” He pointed at my plate. “Those have pork carnitas in them. They’re the bomb, sis. It’s pretty cool to have a guy bringing us food, dontcha think?”
“I do. It’s pretty cool.” I cut into the enchilada, blew on it, and put it into my mouth. “Oh, wow. So good.” I fanned my mouth with my hand, because the enchilada was freaking hot.
“I know. I devoured my food in ten minutes.”
“I believe it. So what’s new? Did you do anything today?” I asked the two questions I always asked. I hated not knowing what he was doing all day long while I was at work. Most kids would get mixed up in drugs or riding around in fast cars. But for the most part, Kevin was a good guy.
“Conrad came over and we just hung out playing video games. It was a hot one today.” He took a drink of his soda. “And when GQ brought the food, we chatted for a while. I really like him.”
I smiled, while chewing. “Mhm. He’s great. What’d you talk about?”
“He asked about school and my plans after graduation.”
Instantly, a knot formed in my stomach. My brother wanted to join the Kings of Anarchy MC and Gideon was someone important, and not a regular member.
He was what he called a council member, which meant more responsibility and perks, I guess.
I could see him recruiting my brother, and I wasn’t sure I liked that.
“What’d ya tell him?” I continued eating the delicious food on my plate, trying to act casual and non-threatening so my brother wouldn’t shutdown. He should feel comfortable enough with me to be open and honest. I wasn’t our parents.
Although, I couldn’t say how I would be with my own child, if I ever had one. I’d first need to find the right man. Gideon’s handsome face flashed behind my eyes and an ache between my legs appeared. I shook him quickly out of my thoughts and focused on my brother.
Kevin wasn’t a child. In two years, he would be a legal adult and the best thing I could do for him was start treating him like one to help him succeed in the real world.
“Oh, you know… I hate school and can’t see myself going to college.” He paused for a moment, leaving me anticipating what he would say next. “I told him I wanted to join his club.”
Yup, there it was, my greatest fear.
“Oh, yeah? What did he think about that?” As if I didn’t already know…
“He thought it was cool I wanted to be a biker.” He shifted on his butt. I had to hand it to him though; he was doing a pretty good job appearing confident.
“Of course he did.” I snapped my mouth shut when I heard my snarky tone and adjusted my attitude. “I mean, he’s a biker. Naturally, anyone who wanted to be in a MC is cool to him.”
Kevin’s face fell. “He thinks I should learn a trade before trying to prospect.”
“He said that?” I was going to kiss the shit out of Gideon when I got the chance. Advising Kevin to learn a trade was the absolute best thing he could have told him. My heart felt like it just grew a couple of sizes larger.
“Yep. If you approve of the plan, he’ll sponsor me when he thinks I was ready. But only if you agree.”
I just might love Gideon Quick. “And how do you feel about what he said?”
“It sucks because I don’t like school. But I get what he’s saying. He never went to college and only manages a bar, and he has his club duties.”
“Which is what?” I asked, but maybe I wasn’t ready to hear what kind of activities Gideon was into with his club.
“I don’t know. He’s the Road Captain, a position he can’t fully do right now because of his injury.” His gaze lowered. “You know he got ran over by a garbage truck, right.”
“Mhm. I know. But he’ll get back on his Harley.
It just takes some time. Did he say anything else about what the club does?
” I had a feeling it was fear holding Gideon back, which was completely normal after such a traumatic experience.
But I saw a change in him since I saw him the night I went to help Cass.
Each day, he was a little better, and his limp was barely noticeable.
“No. He doesn’t talk club business with me. But he’s grateful not to be paralyzed after his accident.” He seemed to ponder his own words.
“I’m glad too.” I wiped the corners of my mouth with a napkin and sighed a sated breath, pausing my eating.
“He said I shouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket. That a smart guy will have options, and that he wasn’t a smart guy so I shouldn’t be like him.”
“Wow, that’s really big of him to say that.” I was pleasantly surprised and could feel myself falling more for my friend.
Speaking of said friend. My phone chimed from inside my tote bag, and I was confident it was Gideon. He texted me throughout the day. Random stuff. He sent me funny memes that made me laugh and I found myself missing him while I was at work.
“Well, overall, it sounds like a good day. The food being the highlight.” I went to retrieve my device.
“The food was the best part for sure. I assume that’s GQ texting you.” He wiggled his eyebrows at me.
“Maybe.” I shrugged and smiled, opening my messages.
“Are you guys dating? I’d be okay with it if you are.” Kevin grinned back at me.
“We’re talking. Isn’t that what your generation calls it?” I read the message…
Gideon: I need you right the fuck now.
Oh boy. I wasn’t sure how to take his message. Needed me how? Was somebody hurt and needed medical attention? Was he not well?
“If you’re talking, then you’re dating in my book. You have my approval.” He gave me a thumbs-up.
“Thanks, I appreciate your support given you didn’t like Brock.” I winked, knowing I was about to set him off.
He made a gagging face. “Why’d you have to bring him up.” Mr. Ridiculously Dramatic acted like he was going to blow chunks on the floor.
I laughed at his comedic performance. “Hey, I’m going to finish this in my room and take a shower. Just one more long day then I’ll have two days off. We should do something.”
“Sure, that’d be great. Invite your boyfriend.”
I shook my head smiling and went to my room, plate in hand. Putting it on my nightstand, I typed out a reply.
Kelly: Hello there to you, too. Why do you sound desperate? Everything ok?
Gideon: Not ok. I haven’t been able to taste you in 2 days.
Gideon: I need you, Sassy Girl.
I liked it when he called me Sassy Girl, but I also liked it when he called me baby, like biker called his old lady, all the time. Swoon. It made me feel so warm and gooey inside.
Kelly: I need you, too.
Gideon: Can I come over?
What? He couldn’t be serious. My brother was here. The last thing I wanted to do was traumatize him with the sounds of my headboard banging against the wall, and my moaning and Gideon’s groaning.
Kelly: Absolutely not. Kevin is here.
Gideon: I can’t wait 2 more days, Kel. I’ve been walking around horny.
My phone lit up, his name flashing on the screen.
“Hi, how are you?” I answered, with a smile on my face.
“Horny. Didn’t you see my text?” Not gonna lie, he sounded pretty unhinged.
“I did. So, your plumbing is working properly. That’s wonderful.”
“I had to jerk off in the shower this morning. You can’t get my motor running and not maintain it, baby. I. Need. You. Now.”
“I thought it was right the fuck now.” Okay, now I was being a brat.
“Stop messing with me. I’m in the parking lot. Come out for a quickie. I’m already hard just talking to you.”
“You’re in the parking lot?” I jumped off my bed and went to look out the window. Sure enough, I could see his big ass truck in a dark corner of the lot.
“Yes. Please come take care of me.”
“I just got home. I haven’t even showered yet.” I sniffed my armpits and stepped in front of my full-length mirror to assess the damage. Bleh. I couldn’t go out and see him looking like I hadn’t showered in weeks.
“Well, hurry up. I’ll wait.” He ended the call, leaving me speechless.
