Chapter 94
Chapter Ninety-Four
Shayne
Ipull on yesterday’s crumpled clothes while Robin goes into the bathroom. Falcon goes into the other room, and I follow him out of the bedroom once I’m fully dressed.
I close the door, and Falcon looks up at me from the chair he’s sitting in while he puts on his boots. Something’s still bothering him, and I’m not sure he’s in a sharing kind of mood.
I go to the door and pick up my shoes, sitting down in the dining chair opposite his to get them unlaced and put them back on.
“So, what’s the plan?” I ask, as I undo the laces.
He snorts. “Plan?”
“You know, for making sure Lana doesn’t just kick us out for claiming someone under her guardianship without filing the right paperwork, or whatever.”
“She can try,” Falcon grumbles. “I’m not leaving Robin’s side for any reason.”
“Yeah, me either,” I agree, making him smile, even if it’s only for a second.
He finishes with his laces and sits up straight, stretching his neck.
The mark he let Robin put there, in plain sight, is all new and shiny.
I’m a little jealous that it’s the first mark he has that’s in a visible place.
Even though I’ve got a matching mark from our new mate, I wish we’d thought about renewing our own marks too. Those are still hidden, and maybe that’s how Falcon wants to keep them.
“We’ll see how this goes. You might need to talk to your brother.”
“Huh?” I ask, realizing I wasn’t paying that much attention when he started to speak.
“I said you might need to get your brother to talk to Lana if she decides to be unreasonable.”
“Oh. Yeah. Sure.”
I finish lacing my shoes and stand back up to give my shirt and pants another smoothing over. They still look pretty creased, but that’s what I get for leaving them on the floor all night.
“Do we ask Harp and Jay to bring our stuff and check out of the hotel?”
He frowns deeper for a second before he answers. “We can call them after we’ve spoken to Lana. Once we know if she’s really as nice as Robin seems to think she is.”
I check my phone and sigh.
“We’ll probably need to use an academy phone line.”
“That’s not exactly ideal,” he admits.
I shrug. “Not much we can do about it.”
His phone is on the coffee table, battery out of charge.
Mine somehow died overnight, despite turning it off.
I take it out and give it another try, but it won’t switch on.
“Definitely dead,” I say as I put it back into my pocket.
“Maybe they’ll let us borrow a charger,” Falcon jokes.
I laugh as the bedroom door opens and Robin steps out, in a black shirt and pants, with her long red hair loose and flowing. She looks like a daydream made flesh. The pale skin on her cheeks turns pink as she glances over at us.
“Um, I’m not late for work, but I should go upstairs and tell Katie not to come get me before our shift, if we’re going to speak to Lana first.”
“Cool,” I tell her. “So, Katie’s your friend?”
“Uh, yeah. I mean, I haven’t known her long, but she’s really nice.”
“Can’t wait to meet her.”
Falcon nods. “Yeah, you two head up there and tell Katie what we’re doing. I’ll meet you at Lana’s office.”
My mouth drops open, but I can’t find a way to voice my shock, so I close it again and just nod in response. I look at Robin, and she comes to my side, putting her arm through mine.
“Ready?” I ask.
She smiles. “Sure.”
