Chapter 20

I don't really know when the shift happens.

It starts like it always has lately—with too much awareness in a room that used to feel normal.

Mason sitting across from me at the table.

Ava asleep in her crib.

Dinner half-finished between us.

But nothing about him feels distant tonight.

Not even slightly.

He's watching me more than his plate again.

Not in a way that makes me nervous.

In a way that makes me... aware.

Like I've stepped too close to something I can't step back from anymore.

"You're quiet," I say softly.

"I'm thinking," he replies.

"About what?"

That gets a pause.

His eyes lift to mine.

And don't move away.

"About you," he says.

My stomach tightens instantly.

Not in fear.

In something worse.

Something warmer.

I put my fork down without meaning to.

The silence that follows isn't uncomfortable.

It's loaded.

Mason stands first.

No warning this time.

No hesitation.

Just movement.

My breath catches as he walks around the table toward me, slower than before—but certain.

Like he's already made his decision and is just closing the distance.

He stops right in front of me.

Close enough that I have to tilt my head back slightly to meet his eyes.

"Chloe," he says quietly.

My name feels different again.

I don't answer.

I can't.

His hand lifts—careful at first—hovering near my waist like he's checking without words if this is still okay.

I don't move away.

That's all he needs.

He leans in.

The first kiss is slow.

Testing.

Not unsure—but controlled, like he's giving me the chance to stop it if I want to.

I don't.

My hand catches his hoodie instinctively, pulling him closer without thinking.

That's when something shifts.

He pauses just slightly—forehead nearly brushing mine.

Not pulling away fully.

Just checking.

A silent question.

I nod faintly.

That's enough.

He kisses me again.

This time it's deeper.

More certain.

Not rushed—just no longer held back.

Like something that's been sitting between us for days finally stops pretending it isn't there.

My chest tightens as I lean into him, the world narrowing down to the space between us and the steady pressure of his hand at my waist anchoring me there.

Ava makes a soft sound from the crib.

It barely registers.

Mason breaks the kiss only enough to breathe, eyes still on mine.

Neither of us moves far.

Not even close.

There's no doubt in his expression.

Just calm certainty.

Like whatever this is, it's not a question anymore.

"Stay," I whisper before I can stop myself.

His mouth twitches slightly.

"Yeah," he says. "I am."

We don't talk about it after.

Not immediately.

Mason turns on the TV like it's the most natural thing in the world, like nothing fundamental just changed between us except everything.

Ava stays asleep.

The apartment feels different—but not tense.

Just full.

He sits on the couch and, after a moment, I do too.

Closer than before.

Not quite touching.

But close enough that I feel every small shift of his presence beside me.

At some point, my head ends up against his shoulder.

I don't even remember deciding to do it.

He doesn't move away.

Instead, his arm comes up slowly around me—steady, grounding, as it belongs there.

We watch something neither of us is really following.

Minutes stretch.

Then the hours blur.

And eventually, I feel myself slipping.

The last thing I register is Mason's hand still resting lightly at my shoulder, his presence solid beside me in a way my brain has started to recognize as safe.

And for the first time in a long time—

I fall asleep without fighting it.

Right there beside him.

Like it's where I was meant to be.
