Chapter 14
Chapter
Fourteen
Iwoke up screaming. Thrashing around, I tried to get up.
The pain was too much. It hurt, and I roared.
Within seconds, I was being wrestled to the ground by two shifters.
They had me pinned against the floor. Sobs wracked my body as I shook like a leaf.
Something was wrong. It hurt so badly. Everything hurt so much.
“What is happening? What is going on?”
Ebony was screaming. My mate. My mate was screaming. I stopped resisting, letting their full weight settled against my body. She came into my view, and I saw her face filled with worry.
“Marcus, what’s wrong? What’s going on?”
“It hurts. Ebony, it hurts. Please.”
She looked behind her. “What is going on?”
“It’s probably the pain from when they broke him. The pain is still fresh in his mind, even though he doesn’t remember it. The experience imprinted itself because it was so painful.”
I knew that voice. It was Macy, the witch who was helping me. Her voice was shaking, and I squeezed my eyes shut.
“This is the second time he’s woken up like this! What can we do? I’m not going to be able to mark him at this point!”
There was silence for a moment. “We could…alter the pain instead.”
“What? What does that even mean?”
“I mean…” she huffed. “If we let him keep the pain, but we morph it into something else. Something this is real, but that he needs to deal with it. Sometimes, memories are best when there are shadows of the truth to them. If we can alter it so it makes sense he would feel pain, then when he wakes up, it might be rough, but it won’t be like this. ”
What was she talking about? Altering my memory? What did that mean? I looked up at Ebony, and she turned back to me. Her fingers brushed my face before she sighed.
“Don’t worry, mate. We will figure this out. No matter how long it takes. We will find the right formula that makes you mine.”
“Ebony…what? What is going on?”
Ebony stood up, a serious look on her face. “Go ahead and administer the serum. We can alter the memories and try again. If the next time goes well enough, we will do some more work and pull him out into the wild.”
I tried to get up, but the two shifters pinning me down didn’t let me move. I felt something slide into my neck and then ice spread across my shoulder. It burned, and I let out a cry. As it spread, my body went slack.
It didn’t take long before I lost consciousness. Drowning in pain, even in the darkness.
