Chapter 13

Chapter

Thirteen

“Idon’t have any guarantees for you; I’m sorry. It doesn’t work like that.”

“You said…”

A female voice huffed. “I said that I could alter memories. That if you wanted me to implant anything, it would need to be blank. It’s not a science. It’s magic. I don’t have any guarantees until he wakes up.”

“Damn it.”

Opening my eyes, I blinked and took in the two women standing before me. My eyes narrowed for a moment before I remembered. Smiling softly, I took a breath.

“Ebony.”

Both of them turned, and Ebony smiled brightly. She came over, placing her hand on my cheek. I nuzzled it, happy to feel my mate. I swallowed hard, trying to wet my mouth enough to speak.

“I have water for you. Give me a moment.”

I waited while she grabbed a water bottle. Slowly, she poured it down for me, and we got through two-thirds of it before she pulled back. The other woman stood in the back of the cell, glaring at me.

“Do you know who I am?”

Nodding, I smiled. “How could I forget my mate? You are Ebony. We mated two years ago. I just…I don’t understand what’s going on right now. Why am I here?”

She pressed a kiss to my cheek. “It’s okay. Don’t think about it too much. Some bad things happened to you and you needed to be subdued. I just want you to rest.”

My shoulders shifted, and the chains pulled tight. “I need…”

Ebony shook her head. “I’m sorry, I can’t right now. I want to. It’s just…you hurt me.”

Horror filled my face. I was here because I hurt my mate? My body slumped, and I hung my head.

“Oh, sweet mate, don’t worry. I’m okay. We just need to make sure you are all right.

It’s going to take some time, but we are going to help you.

Macy here…” She motioned to the woman in the back.

“…she is going to help, too. She’s a white witch.

Her magic heals, and that’s what we are trying to do. ”

“If I hurt you…Ebony…I can’t…”

Her arms wrapped around me, and I buried my head in her shoulder. “It’s okay, Marcus. It will work out. I promise. We will still be together, as we should be. It’s just going to take some time.”

“Are you sure?” My voice broke.

“I am. You are my fated mate, Marcus. I couldn’t just throw away our bond like that.”

Nodding, I slumped against the wall. She stepped out with Macy, the witch. I closed my eyes as the door shut behind them. I felt horrible. Maybe it was a good thing my dragon wasn’t present. I couldn’t imagine actually hurting my own mate.

Just as the sun filled the space of the dungeon I was in, the fell asleep again. Time meant nothing to me, and I was still feeling a pain that seeped into my bones, sometimes stealing my breath away.
