I stared at my phone in complete disbelief, skimming the texts above what Sara had sent.
Lucas : I have to get up early Monday. Damn. Maybe next week?
Me : Yeah, maybe.
Me : Unless your friend is interested in hooking up, too. Is he single? The three of us could have a LOT of fun tonight ;-)
“You suggested…” I lowered my voice to an angry hiss. “A threesome!”
“Let’s just see what he says!” Sara insisted.
“And then you sent a winky face? I’ve never sent a winky face IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!”
“You’re overreacting.”
“SARA! How could you do this? Stealing my phone while I was in the bathroom and texting him? That’s seriously not cool!”
She pointed at me. “You did the exact same thing to me when Harper and I were friends. Remember? I didn’t have the guts to ask him out, so you stole my phone and told him that I had a big fat crush. And look what happened? Now we’re happily married and starting a family.”
I sat back down and poured myself more wine. “That was different. You two were perfect for each other, and needed a little nudge. Lucas and I, on the other hand, are not compatible at all. This is just a hook-up.”
“Exactly. The stakes are lower. If he and his buddy say no to a threesome, then nothing of value is lost. You never have to speak to him again, because you already weren’t going to.”
She had a point there, but that didn’t make my heart stop pounding.
“It’s been two minutes, and he hasn’t responded,” I said. “I think it’s safe to say they’re not interested.”
Sara shrugged. “Too bad. I’ve always wanted to have a threesome.”
I shuddered. “I really don’t like discussing my sex life with my little sister.”
“I’m eight months pregnant. I don’t have a filter.”
I opened my mouth to tell her that was no excuse, but then my phone chimed.
Lucas had responded.
Lucas : Haha, I can’t tell if you’re serious or not. But if you are, you’re welcome to come over and see what happens. I’ll send you my address. We’re making margaritas.
“Ah hah!” Sara said when I showed her the text. “He’s totally into it!”
“That’s not what he said,” I argued.
“He said he’s into it without saying he’s into it. What do you think it means to come over and see what happens?”
“Do guys even like that kind of threesome?” I asked. “I’ve always thought they only want to do it with two women. None of them want to be in bed with another man.”
Sara leaned forward and tapped my phone. “Clearly, they do.”
It had all been a big joke up until this point, but as I re-read the text message five straight times, the reality began sinking in. I had always thought of threesomes as something that people did in college. Single moms didn’t have that kind of fun.
“I have Bran…” I said weakly.
“Who I’ll watch for you,” Sara insisted. “His bedtime is soon, anyway. Stop making excuses. You’re always complaining about life being boring since you had Bran. This is your chance to do something exciting!”
“I’ve never met this other guy,” I said. “What if he’s ugly? Or what if I hate him?”
“Then you can leave,” Sara said patiently. “You can get a feel for their vibe, then decide what to do. Lucas did phrase it so that you could see what happens . That’s not a firm commitment.”
God, it was tempting. The idea of hooking up with Lucas had already turned me on, remembering all the steamy fun we had when we were young. Adding another guy? Being shared by two men at the same time? It gave me the best kind of goosebumps.
“You really don’t mind watching Bran?”
“Of course not. He’ll be sleeping the whole time. Besides, I’m expecting plenty of reciprocal babysitting favors when these guys eventually pop out.” She rested her hand on her belly.
I gulped down the last of the wine, and my last notes of inhibition finally disappeared.
“Okay,” I said. “I’ll do it.”
