“Are you going to do it?” my buddy Shay asked with a small smile.

I skimmed the texts with Haley, my ex. She had bluntly asked if this was a hook-up, then said she would love to get a drink at my place. But by that time, Shay had come over.

“I don’t know,” I said.

“I can leave,” Shay insisted, crossing one leg over the other on the couch across from me. “The last thing I want to do is get in the way of somebody having sex.”

“I don’t know,” I replied. “If I kick you out, won’t I seem too eager?”

“Immaterial,” Shay replied in a tone that reminded me he was an attorney. “This is just a hook-up. You’re not trying to win her over long-term. Right?”

“Right,” I said after only a moment of hesitation. Shay narrowed his eyes, but didn’t call me on it.

I glanced at the photo on my phone. Haley hadn’t updated her Facebook profile in five years, but she had a profile on the Real Estate Agency website where she worked. She looked as beautiful as ever, although the photo only showed her from the chest up.

I was certain she would have settled down by now. Women like her didn’t stay single for very long. But based on the feelers I had put out through old high school friends, she wasn’t married.

Something twisted in my chest. Desire, and regret, and shame. I had a lot of fond memories with Haley, but they were tainted by the way I had fucked things up. I was so young and immature back then.

But if I had another chance…

Sighing, I texted her back to see if she was free tomorrow. But she wasn’t.

“Damn,” Shay said, rolling up the sleeve of his hoodie to scratch his elbow. “I’m going to do you a favor and make the decision for you. Text her back. I’ll leave.”

“I don’t have to get laid tonight,” I insisted. “I can wait until next weekend.”

I’ve waited all these years, I thought to myself. What’s another week?

“Don’t feel bad,” Shay said, standing up. “Buy me a beer to make it up to me later.”

“I already owe you so much,” I argued. “You’re letting me stay at your rental unit…”

“You’re paying rent. Slightly lower than market rate, sure, but I’ll happily trade that money in exchange for a tenant I know and trust.” He walked over and patted me on the shoulder. “Have a good night. Tell me about it tomorrow.”

That’s when Haley texted me back.

Haley : Unless your friend is interested in hooking up, too. Is he single? The three of us could have a LOT of fun tonight ;-)

“Uhh,” I said, holding up my phone for Shay to see.

He stood very still while reading the text. “Is she serious?” he asked quietly.

“I honestly have no idea,” I admitted. “She was always a blunt girl, which I loved about her. But I never expected her to suggest something like this.”

“It’s been years since you’ve seen her. People change.”

“Ain’t that the truth,” I muttered. I turned my gaze up to Shay. “Well?”

“Well what?”

“Are you interested?”

He slowly put down his backpack, returned to the couch, and sat down. “Are you?”

We stared at each other. A silence stretched. It was like we were playing chicken, waiting to see who would answer first.

“Let’s say we wanted to do this,” Shay finally said. “Hypothetically.”

“Totally,” I agreed. “Just a thought experiment.”

“I have two primary concerns.” Shay began ticking off points on his fingers. “Will it affect your relationship with Haley? And more importantly, will it affect our friendship?”

“I don’t have a relationship with Haley,” I said. “And regarding our friendship… I don’t know.”

“It could get weird,” Shay said. “Having a threesome.”

Oh my God. I couldn’t believe we were actually discussing this. It helped that we were both two drinks deep, and I had made the margaritas very strong.

“Once you’ve seen your friend’s dick, there’s no going back,” I said with a laugh.

But Shay only frowned. “I’ve seen your dick before.”

I gave a start. “What? When?”

“You got blackout drunk at Chris Morrison’s graduation party,” he explained. “I was older than everyone there by five years, so I was the only one who could handle his liquor while the rest of you got smashed. I dragged you into the shower, stripped your clothes, and washed off all the vomit. I saw parts of you I can never forget.”

I winced. “That’s definitely a memory I’ve repressed. You’re still my friend after that?”

“Of course,” he replied without hesitation. “You’d do the same for me.”

I nodded. That was true. I trusted Shay with my life, and would do anything for him.

“I’ve had a threesome before,” Shay said. “It was really hot.”

“But not like…” I struggled to find the words. “You didn’t… you and the other guy…”

“I am not bisexual,” Shay stated, once again sounding like the attorney that he was. “We only touched the woman. Think of it as playing videogames together.” He pointed at my PlayStation beneath the TV. “We’re playing the same game at the same time, but we have our own controllers. We don’t need to touch each other’s.”

“So, you would be into this?” I asked.

Shay tilted his head. I could see the gears grinding as he considered his response.

“Haley is attractive,” he finally said. “And you’ve told me that she’s the best sex you’ve ever had, although you did not elaborate on the details.”

“We had great chemistry in bed,” I said. My cock twitched at the memory. “Yeah. It was always exciting.”

“Then I’m interested,” Shay admitted. “But only if you are. And only if you don’t have lingering feelings for this girl. The absolute last thing I want to do is have a threesome with someone you’re secretly still in love with.”

He narrowed his eyes at me, waiting for my response.

I took a sip of my margarita to buy myself a moment before answering. “I just want sex tonight. Without anything behind it.”

“I’m an attorney, Lucas,” he said. “I’m an expert at recognizing when someone is avoiding a question. And you just deftly answered a different question than the one I asked.”

“I’m not secretly in love with her,” I insisted. “I’m in. Let’s do this.”

Shay studied me for a few heartbeats, then nodded. “Let’s do this. I’ll make the next batch of margaritas. I need at least one more drink if I’m going to see your penis again.”

“I hope it’s not triggering for you,” I said while pulling out my phone.

I was nervous. But more than that, I was excited. Deeply, overwhelmingly excited in a way that shocked me.

This was my second chance with Haley.

And it was going to start with a bang.
