Epilogue

Yelena

“I’m at this ridiculously expensive baby clothing store. What are you doing, husband?”

“Well, I was in the middle of a meeting and I missed you,” Silas said. It had been two days of non-stop meetings so by the time he returned home, he’d carry me to bed from my perch on the sofa.

“So why don’t you be irresponsible and ditch those things and join me.”

“We’re of the same mind. I’m on my way in ten minutes.”

“I’ll be waiting, my love.”

“I promise I won’t be too long.” He was only fifteen minutes from the store, so I had less than half an hour to wait. I ended the call with a grin on my face that was too wide.

Next door to the store was a smoothie place. Daniel was waiting near the front door just in case because my husband took my safety a little too seriously. I walked up to him and said, “Daniel, I’m going to get a smoothie next door.”

“I’ll walk you there.”

“It’s not far from here,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Don’t argue with me, because that’s what I’m here for. The boss would have my head if I let you go without protection.”

“Fine. At least pick something for yourself.”

“No can do. Have to keep my hands available.” I supposed he had a point, but I hated spoiling myself while he stood around.

“Whatever. I’ll get you something and then I’ll hold it,” I informed him. He rolled his eyes and smirked.

We came out less than ten minutes later with delicious strawberry smoothies. “Do you want to wait in the car?”

“No, it’s such a nice day.”

“Fine,” he sighed, grabbing his drink and took a sip.

“You bitch,” a high-pitched voice screamed from behind me.

I whirled around to see who was shouting, but it was Daniel who acted even faster.

“I’m going to kill you.” Ms. Bell ran at me with a knife, but she was no match for the speed and skill of my bodyguard.

He swiftly disarmed her, pinning her to the ground.

“Bitch, you’re going to rot in prison this time,” Daniel snapped. He had her zip tied with a knee in her back. He pulled out his phone and called the police while I rocked and my smoothie made a puddle on the cement below my feet.

“She really came here to kill me,” I said, voice cracking. Several people from inside the two shops came out to see what was happening. A woman brought me a light sweater and whispered, “It’s going to be okay. You need to sit.”

“I need my husband.” Just then Silas and the police arrived. He rushed over and stopped for a second as he took in the scene. Then he rushed to my side, pulling me into his arms. “You’re here.”

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” he whispered against my ear. “Look at me, Yelena.” The world was going dark, and I fainted.
