WEDDING RECEPTION – VALENTINE’S DAY
“You’re happy he’s here, huh?” Violet asked as we hid away from everyone in my car.
I wanted to leave now that we’d said I do but she didn’t have a rude bone in her body and refused.
Today hadn’t really felt like our day, especially after my grandda showed up.
“Yeah,” I admitted, unable to keep the smile off my face. “Him being here is…”
I sighed, that little bit of happiness his presence brought gone.
“How about this…” she brushed my jacket off her shoulders, revealing the thin straps of her reception dress and the tin case tucked between one. “Gianna slipped this to me earlier. She can’t smoke them and demands we do it for her. So…” She reached for the lighter in the console—after pulling one of the perfectly rolled blunts from the tin—and lit it. “Smoke with me?”
I watched her take a couple long pulls and then blow it in my face before handing it over.
“There’s a reason you never mentioned him, right?”
Violet put her seat back and turned to face me, eyes peering deeply into mine even as smoke danced between us.
“We never really talk about my grandda in general,” I said, putting the blunt to her lips after toking it a few times. “It means mentioning my mhaimeó, too.”
And we never talked about her, especially not around Sean.
“You can tell me anything, sunshine,” Violet whispered. “I probably already know.”
She sounded proud of herself and I chuckled, letting my seat back.
“I wish you got to see the immediate shift in him after it happened,” I said, dropping my head back and turning to look at her. “I admired him deciding to grow up on his own. He didn’t wait for anybody to give him direction, he just did the shit and never complained.”
We all followed in my brother’s footsteps in our own way, still kids ourselves at the time of our grandmother’s murder, but understanding the gravity of what Sean witnessed either way.
“We should have a word with him,” Violet said out of nowhere, lifting up with a smile.
I did the same and followed her gaze, my lips curling at the sight of Landell talking to my aunt—his wife.
“Appreciate you helping out,” I said, leaning over the center console to steal a kiss. “I love you, moonlight.”
She wrapped her arms around my neck and bit down gently on my lip before releasing me and opening her door.
“I love you, sunshine. But I took the oath, so helping out comes with the territory now or did you forget?”
Violet didn’t give me the chance to respond, but we both knew I hadn’t forgotten shit. Especially not her initiation into mob ranks as my second-in-command.
I grabbed my gun and cloning phone from the glove compartment and followed behind her until she came to a stop.
Landell’s eyes met mine as I moved past her and walked up on him, draping my arm over his shoulder as if we were the best of friends.
He’d been my dad’s driver since before I could remember. Up until his lust for more power fucked with our bottom line.
“Long time no see, unc ,” I said coolly, giving my aunt a half smile. “Auntie, let me have a word with him.”
She gave me big eyes but I shook my head, ensuring her I wouldn’t touch him. At least not yet, but he would die eventually.
I watched her walk up the cobble stone driveway for a second then released Landell.
“I’m heading out early,” he said, reaching to open the car door but stopping short when my gun met his chin.
He’d always been an ungrateful, scary little bitch and I really wanted to fucking kill him.
“Sunshine,” Violet commanded softly, reining me in with ease.
I dropped my hand and leaned forward.
“Whoever you’re trying to marry Anessa off to, the answer is and will always be no. Your daughters aren’t for sale and neither is my family’s business. The choices you make next are important, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
I took a step back and he quickly got into his car, started it up and drove off.
The gates opened for him and I pulled the cloning device from my pocket.
“You’re so sneaky,” Violet said in a sing-song voice as she walked up on me and tried taking the one thing that might make her next job easier. “Are you denying me?”
My lips curled.
“What does your husband get out of this?” I asked, dangling Landell’s cloned phone in her face. “Or I can tell you what I want.”
She crossed her arms, clearly plotting revenge.
“Tell me what you want and I’ll think about giving it to you.”
It was cute, her defiance.
This version of her was my favorite, the one that played along with my bullshit for the hell of it.
She could get whatever from me, for nothing at all.
At any time or day.
“You’ll give it to me because you love me,” I said, looping my arm over her shoulder and guiding us back to my car. “Just like I’ll give you this.”
I handed it over and she took it with a smile.
“You ready to leave now?” I asked.
Violet hummed, tucking the phone between her dress strap as we slid into our seats and locked ourselves behind tinted windows again.
I started the car up before she gave a silent but definitive yes—by slipping her hand in mine—and pulled around the circular drive toward the gate.
We’d given enough of our day to everybody else. Now it was time to make it all about us.
