Trevor
As he steps past the foyer and into the main living room, though, it’s immediately clear that something isn’t normal here.
First of all, the house is noisy. Much more so than it would be if Skyler were here alone.
And more than that, the place is a wreck.
It looks like a tornado blew through the room.
There are end tables stacked on top of each other, other furniture out of place and draped with sheets and blankets, and even more bedding spread out haphazardly on the floor.
He believes her. She’s too lazy to create this much of a mess.
“That’s our treasure!” a small voice exclaims.
“We had a treasure hunt,” Skyler explains.
“Uh huh.” Trevor glances again at the jewelry. Not all of Skyler’s jewelry is expensive, but some of it definitely is. But he’s not too surprised that Skyler isn’t worried about any of it breaking or going missing.
Skyler gathers up the couple of blankets that were strewn across the couch and tosses them to the floor before sitting down. The kids immediately throw themselves on the floor and start rolling around in the bedding. Trevor carefully sidesteps them to sit beside Skyler.
“Annie needed Mike to babysit,” Skyler says. “But I was bored, so I asked if I could do it.”
“Uh huh,” Trevor says again, amused.
But Skyler must not pick up on the amusement, because he winces. “I know we made a mess. Don’t worry, I’ll clean everything up.”
Setting a hand on Skyler’s thigh, Trevor assures him, “I’m not mad. I’m only trying to figure out what the heck happened here.”
“We were trying to build the world’s most epic fort. But apparently, I’m not the best structural engineer.”
“Well, I guess you can’t be great at everything, can you?” Trevor says, giving Skyler a quick kiss on the cheek. “That wouldn’t be fair.”
Skyler places his hand over Trevor’s and threads their fingers together. Glancing down, Trevor notices the opal ring—the one he originally had engraved for Skyler what feels like a lifetime ago—is on Skyler’s finger. Not in the treasure chest.
That ring means a lot to both of them.
“I’m sorry I don’t have anything started for dinner,” Skyler says.
“I sent Mike out to the store to grab a bag of chicken nuggets for the kids, and I have some sweet potatoes in the pantry, so I was going to make them sweet potato fries to go with the nuggets. But I haven’t had time to think of what to make for us. ”
“Baby, you don’t have to apologize to me for that,” Trevor tells him. “The only reason I don’t do more of the cooking for us is because I know you love doing it. But you never have to cook for me.”
“I know.”
One of the kids knocks into Trevor’s leg like a little wrecking ball. It startles him, but then he smiles at his husband. “Besides, I’m cool with nuggets and fries for dinner.”
For a few seconds, Skyler just looks at him, his green eyes lit up with happiness. Trevor kind of wishes the kids weren’t here so he could kiss him. Well, maybe more than kiss him. Maybe kiss the parts of him that would be totally unacceptable to kiss in front of the kids.
But it’s okay, because he can see how much fun Skyler’s having babysitting. And this is certainly an interesting change to their normal evening routine, but Trevor is finding that he doesn’t mind it at all.
He could see this for them. In the future. He doesn’t know how far off that future might need to be, but he can see it.
While Skyler gets the oven preheated and the sweet potatoes sliced up, Trevor helps the kids make their fort a bit more epic.
They’re easily impressed by his building skills, but he’s not entirely sure how to entertain them once they’ve all gotten inside the fort, so he’s glad when Skyler returns and crawls in with them.
The kids gravitate toward him, and Trevor participates in the game Skyler makes up, but mostly he sits there and watches his husband.
It seems he’ll never stop being awed by Skyler. By his playfulness, joy, and creativity. And by the endless amount of love he has to give.
When they were in New York last month, Skyler did that interview for a morning show.
The primary focus was supposed to be his role in the upcoming Disney movie, but with Skyler talking about how important it is to include queer representation in children’s media, that led the hosts into asking him very personal questions about he and Trevor’s relationship and whether they were planning to start their own family.
Skyler was vague about it at first, only admitting that he’d love to have children someday, while telling them he wasn’t sure if or when it would be possible. But as Trevor sat in the greenroom watching on a monitor, he could see it so clearly—how deeply Skyler wants this.
The hosts continued to pry, asking which avenue Skyler and Trevor would pursue if they did decide to have children, and how it might affect their careers.
Skyler, being Skyler, remained nothing but pleasant as he tried his best to give answers.
But the truth was, he obviously didn’t have all the answers. And neither did Trevor.
These were all the questions that had already been running through Trevor’s mind leading up to this interview, and hearing Skyler talk about the subject only confirmed for Trevor that Skyler has been thinking about all this too.
Of course, the other thing the interview did was bring about a whole slew of gossip articles speculating on the subject. Speculating on Trevor and Skyler’s very private lives. But they’re used to that.
He and Skyler have always been able to talk about anything.
And since they came back into each other’s lives after the breakup, they’ve only gotten even better at communicating.
So Trevor’s honestly not sure why he hasn’t brought up the topic of children with Skyler yet.
He’s been dealing with a lot of work stuff, sure, but that’s not a good enough reason not to have time to talk to his husband.
When dinner is ready, both kids want Skyler to carry them into the dining room, and for a second, they start arguing about it. But Skyler is quick to solve this problem. He crouches down so one kid can jump on his back, then scoops the other up in his arms, and everyone’s happy.
As Trevor follows behind the three of them, he can’t get over how perfect that picture is. It’s something he could love seeing every day. So he decides right now that he’s going to make time for this conversation as soon as possible.
