Chapter 8 – A GHOST FROM THE PAST

Chapter Eight

A GHOST FROM THE PAST

Steel sat on the edge of the bed, the weight of the past pressing down on him like a physical force.

The room was dark, except for the sliver of moonlight that filtered through a crack in the curtains.

Indigo slept peacefully beside him, her soft breathing a gentle rhythm in the quiet of the night.

But for Steel, sleep was a distant dream, consumed as he was by the ghosts that haunted him.

He had tried to outrun his past, to bury it beneath a mountain of achievements and violence. But it was always there, lurking in the shadows, waiting to remind him of the life he once had. It was a life that had been ripped away from him in a heartbeat of tragedy and loss.

His wife, Maria, and their young son, Tommy, had been the center of his world.

They were his reason for breathing, his source of joy in a life that was otherwise steeped in chaos and danger.

But in a single, cruel night, they were taken from him, their lives cut short by a rival gang’s senseless act of violence.

The pain of their loss was a wound that had never fully healed, a raw and festering sore that Steel carried with him every day. It had hardened him, turned him into the ruthless enforcer for the Bloodhound Vows MC, a man who would stop at nothing to protect what was his.

But Indigo had changed all that. She had managed to break through the walls he had built around himself, to reach the man he used to be before the world had turned dark and cold. She was light and warmth, a beacon of hope in the midst of the storm that raged inside him.

Yet, even as he found solace in her presence, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was putting her in danger by allowing her to get close to him.

The cartel’s bounty on her head was a constant reminder of the peril that surrounded them, and Steel knew that his past sins could very well come back to haunt them both.

As he sat there in the darkness, his thoughts were interrupted by the faint sound of movement.

His instincts kicked in, adrenaline surging through his veins as he reached for the gun he always kept within arm’s reach.

But as he turned towards the source of the noise, he saw Indigo stirring in her sleep, her brows furrowed as if she were lost in a troubling dream.

Steel’s grip on the gun loosened, and he set it aside, his heart aching with a mixture of love and fear.

He didn't want to wake her, didn't want to pull her from whatever peaceful place her subconscious had managed to find amidst the turmoil of their lives.

Instead, he reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, the pad of his thumb lightly tracing the curve of her cheek.

Indigo murmured something unintelligible and shifted closer to him, seeking the warmth of his body even in sleep.

Steel couldn't help but smile at her unconscious display of affection.

She had a way of grounding him, of reminding him that there was still goodness in the world, despite the darkness that seemed to follow him wherever he went.

He thought back to the day he had first laid eyes on her, a fierce and fiery presence in his otherwise bleak existence.

She had been a force of nature from the start, challenging him at every turn, refusing to bow down to the formidable reputation that preceded him.

And in doing so, she had captured his heart in a way he never thought possible.

But with that love came a profound sense of responsibility.

Steel knew that his enemies would stop at nothing to hurt him, and that meant Indigo was always in their crosshairs.

The cartel’s doubling of the bounty on her head was a clear message: they saw her as his greatest vulnerability, and they intended to exploit it.

The thought of losing Indigo the way he had lost Maria and Tommy was unbearable.

It was a fear that clawed at his insides, gnawing away at him until he could barely breathe.

He had vowed to keep her safe, to protect her from the ugliness of his world, but he knew that his presence in her life only heightened the danger she faced.

Steel's gaze drifted to the nightstand, where a photograph of Maria and Tommy sat in a simple wooden frame.

He picked it up, his fingers brushing over the glass as he studied their faces, their smiles frozen in time, untouched by the sorrow that would soon befall them.

They had been his everything, and in an instant, they were gone.

The pain of that loss was something he wouldn't wish on his worst enemy, let alone Indigo.

He set the photograph down gently and turned back to Indigo, the soft rise and fall of her chest a comforting sight. He knew he couldn't change the past, couldn’t bring back Maria and Tommy, but he could do everything in his power to ensure that Indigo remained safe and by his side.

The cartel’s threat was ever-present, a looming shadow that darkened their days and haunted their nights.

But Steel was determined to stand against it.

He would use every resource at his disposal, call in every favor owed to him, and leverage the full might of the Bloodhound Vows MC to keep Indigo out of harm’s way.

As the first light of dawn began to seep into the room, Steel decided.

He would take the fight to the cartel, would strike with such force and fury that they would think twice before coming after them again.

He would show them that Indigo was not just some pawn in their twisted game.

She was a queen, and she was under his protection.

With that resolve firmly in place, Steel gently shook Indigo awake. She blinked up at him, her eyes still heavy with sleep, a small frown forming between her brows as she registered the intensity of his gaze.

“Steel? What’s wrong?” she asked, her voice thick with worry.

He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs stroking her cheeks in a soothing motion. “I need you to listen to me, Indigo,” he said, his voice low and steady. “I’m going to end this, once and for all. But I need you to stay here, where it’s safe.”

Indigo’s eyes widened, and she sat up abruptly, the sheets pooling around her waist. “No,” she said firmly, shaking her head. “I’m not staying behind while you risk your life. We’re in this together, remember?”

Steel's heart clenched at her words, at the undeniable courage she displayed. He knew better than to try to dissuade her; Indigo was as stubborn as they came, and she would not be swayed. “Okay,” he relented, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “We’ll do this together. But we need to be smart about it. We’ll plan our next move carefully, and we'll have the MC at our backs.”

Indigo nodded, the determination in her eyes matching his own. Together, they rose from the bed and began to prepare for the day ahead, their actions a silent testament to their unwavering commitment to one another.

They dressed in their toughest leathers, gear that would offer some protection against the violence they were about to face.

Steel checked his weapons with practiced precision, ensuring each firearm was loaded and ready.

Indigo, too, armed herself, her hands steady as she loaded her own gun, a smaller piece that she had become proficient with over the past few months.

They met with the MC in the main room of the clubhouse, the air heavy with the weight of impending conflict. Viper, the MC's president, stood at the head of the table, his gaze sharp as he addressed the gathered members.

“We’ve got a war on our hands,” he stated, his voice carrying the unmistakable authority of a seasoned leader. “The cartel thinks they can intimidate us and think they can take what’s ours. But they don't know who they're dealing with. We’re the Bloodhound Vows, and we don’t back down. We fight.”

A chorus of agreement rose from the members, a solid wall of support that bolstered Steel’s resolve. Indigo stood by his side, her presence a source of strength that he drew upon freely.

They spent hours poring over maps and strategies, discussing potential points of attack and formulating a plan that would give them the element of surprise.

Steel and Indigo shared their insights, their knowledge of the cartel's operations gleaned from their past encounters and the intelligence gathered by the MC.

As the meeting drew to a close, Viper fixed Steel and Indigo with a serious look. “You two have proven yourselves time and again. I know you’ll do what needs to be done. But remember, we're a family, and we look out for our own. Don't take any unnecessary risks.”

With their plan in place and the backing of the MC, Steel and Indigo set out to face the cartel.
