Twelve

Summer

River sits warm and hard inside of me, pressing up against the deeper part of me I didn’t know was possible to reach.

Both of us need a moment before I start moving.

It’s almost overwhelming. River’s scent.

The stretch of him. The fact that this is happening and I’m wondering why it took us so long.

I rest my palms on River’s shoulders, preparing to slightly lift my hips up. I’m barely in motion when River’s hands fly from my thighs to my hips.

“I know this probably is anything but sexy.” River leans his head back and squeezes his eyes shut. His voice shakes slightly as he speaks. “But I need you to be still just for a little longer otherwise I think I might come right now.”

That makes me involuntarily squeeze around him, earning me the sight of River’s hips twitching under me.

“Don’t worry.” I can’t help but chuckle. “There are other things I can do to keep me occupied for the time being.”

I don’t give River time to ask questions.

I just wrap my arms around his neck and leave small open-mouthed kisses along his jawline.

His shoulders. Down his neck. Then finally to his lips.

I pull back just a bit and I can’t help but smile at the sight of River watching me.

Taking me in. His eyes then meet mine and for a moment I forget that his dick is inside of me right now.

If it weren’t for that, nothing between us would be different.

It’d just be the quiet familiarity of two people who’ve known each other for half of their lives.

“Hi,” River whispers.

“Hi, River.” I lean back in and smile against his lips. “Is it okay if I move now?”

He nods, swallowing. My hands return to their spot on River’s shoulders and I carefully lift my hips up. The friction of River’s bare dick against my walls has my toes curling.

River drops his forehead back against mine again. “How the hell do you feel so good?”

I smile softly. “You flatter me.”

If he thinks this feels good, then I wonder what reaction I’ll get when my pace picks up.

I replace the slow drag of my hips with a steady bounce.

River chokes. His hands squeeze my hips with a bruising grip but I can’t blame him.

I also feel like I need something to hold onto.

Which is why one of my hands rests on the nape of River’s neck and the other settles behind me, on his thigh.

I use the slight switch in position to quicken my pace further, caught up in River but aware enough of the fact that we’re fucking in a parking lot. I don’t care that we have all summer, I need to feel him come inside me. I need to be the first to do it. I want to leave that mark on him.

“Give me your hand.” I let go of River’s neck, and he’s already giving me what I asked for. I bring his hand between our bodies and press his thumb on my clit.

I use my own finger to encourage him to press circles into me again. River has always been a quick learner. I should’ve known that he’d have me on the verge of falling apart already and it hasn’t even been five minutes since I last came.

“I want you to give it to me,” I whine. “I want you to come inside me.”

River frantically nods his head. His hips slightly buck up to meet mine. The coiling in my stomach intensifies. Especially when I can feel the car shaking with our movements. My lips find River’s but we’re not even kissing at this point, just breathing against each other.

“Summer—” River chokes. “I’m—I don’t think I can—fuck—” he whines.

“Come,” I instruct. “Just please, fucking come inside me.”

River’s arms wrap around me, pulling me into a bear hug. He buries his face into my neck and my body ignites. My arms wrap just as tightly around his neck and we hold onto each other, afraid the other might disappear.

Or float away.

Or maybe this is just a dream.

River’s hips fall back onto the seat and his dick twitches inside me.

Everything stops. For a moment, I’m existing outside of my body.

The aching in my knees from the awkward position dissipates.

My head clears. There’s nothing to fix right now.

Nothing to concern myself with. Other than arranging for this entire thing to happen again.

I smile against River’s neck. “I really hope Mario doesn’t fire you.” I pull away just enough to see the dazed-out look on River’s face.

He blinks a few times before his eyes refocus. I can’t help but feel a little prideful at the sight.

“Your fifteen-minute break turned into at least forty-five,” I explain but River doesn’t bother to pull away or make any effort to rush back into Metric’s.

He finally speaks. “Considering that he calls me in whenever he doesn’t feel like working, he can fuck off right now.”

We continue to remain in the car like this. Silent, just listening to each other breathe. I find myself trying to match River’s breathing, as if that’ll make me feel closer to him rather than the fact that his dick is still sitting inside me.

“How’d you get here?” River asks, voice groggy.

I don’t even know how he’s going to be able to get back to work.

“I took a cab.”

Which is usually the case if River isn’t driving me. Or Bethany. I do have my license but living in New York really hasn’t given me much reason to get a car of my own.

“Take my car back to the apartment,” River orders. “I’ll ask Mario for a ride home.” He twists the ends of my hair around his finger.

“No.” I shake my head. “I can just get another cab back.”

“Please? I know you hate driving but I don’t want you taking a cab this late.”

My heart flutters at his quiet concern. It’s nothing new but it feels a little different when I’ve yet to lift my hips and pull us apart. I’m not really looking forward to doing that.

“Fine, but I’ll come back and pick you up when you get off.” I compromise.

River nods his head and I’m sure he’s about to tell me that it’ll be too late but I don’t care, he’s letting me use his car. The least I can do is pick him up. So, I interrupt his refusal with a few pecks on his lips. He sighs against me.

“Call me when you get off,” I say, making it clear that there isn’t room for discussion.

***

By the time two-thirty in the morning rolls around, I’m out front of Metric’s once again but this time sitting in the driver’s seat of River’s car.

“Want me to drive?” River asks as he leans against the open passenger door.

“No, I’ll do it this time, sleepyhead.”

River doesn’t try to argue with me and that’s how I know he’s as exhausted as he looks. He slips into the car and melts into the passenger seat.

“Long night?” I keep my voice gentle as I pull away from the curb, settling into the peacefulness of the radio quietly playing Seether.

When River is quiet for a little too long, I look over to see his head leaning lazily to the side, and a tired smile rests on his face.

“Tonight was perfect,” River admits.

I smile, twisting my free hand and reaching for the takeout bag on the center console. I set it down on his lap.

“Well, it’s about to get a lot better,” I declare.

River immediately groans and the sound shoots straight down between my thighs, but I try to behave myself. I’ll choose to be greedy some other time when River isn’t hanging onto consciousness.

“You didn’t have to do this,” River says while tearing the bag open to reveal a greasy cheeseburger.

“I did,” I argue. “I don’t need to hear you complaining about not being able to sleep because of how hungry you are.”

River swallows before speaking. “You do it too.”

“Yeah, that’s how I knew this burger was a necessity.”

Another moment of silence settles between River and me. He lazily eats away at his food and neither of us feel the need to fill the space with a conversation. This is what I wanted. Quiet moments with my best friend that don’t feel like the life we built together isn’t going to come crashing down.

“Thanks, Sum.” River speaks.

“You’re welcome.” I pat his thigh. “Now sit back and relax, passenger princess.”

“Will do.”

And just like that, things are back to normal between us. See? I knew this whole thing would work out.
