Chapter 28

This time of year, when we make our yearly sojourn to take our young’uns to visit all their foreign relatives always brings back memories when I first went to Pennsylvania.

I suppose if the truth were known, I probably did sound as funny to them as they did to me.

But being as how there was just ONE of me for them to understand and eighty thousand million of them, things did seem a bit unbalanced! !

I thought I was right smart when I figured out they meant faucet or hydrant when they said “spigot”.

But, dear hearts, I ’bout came unwound when they used the word “redded”!

They “redded” up the house, “redded” out the drawers, and “red” out someone when they were bad.

Good grief!! Most of the time they meant “clean”, but even yet I have not ever fully understood all the meanings of “redded”! !

We think our roads are crooked if there are TWO curves in less than a hundred miles. They think their roads are straight if they don’t have at least TWENTY curves in less than one city block!!

Oh, well, I can now understand TWO languages—Yankee and Rebel but try as I may, I still cannot speak anything but OKIE!!!
