810 THE BACKLASH
Iris watched how Abby tried her hardest to absorb the strong black magic from Ethan. The light that she produced was cluttered to many directions when it supposed to focus on one point.
"She couldn’t hold it. She will get a backlash from it," Lou said.
Iris didn’t realize it when exactly Lou stood by her side, she only noticed him when he spoke to her, while staring at what Abby was doing.
"What do you mean?" Iris looked at him, worried in her expression. She wished everything would go well with Ethan, but seeing Abby’s struggle, she was afraid for both of them.
"I am not sure if it happened to a Serafim, since divine power was pretty different from normal magic.
But, for a magic user, when your power was cluttered like that, it would cause the power to disintegrated.
Needless to say, that was not a good sign for a magic user, since the strength of the power will hit you as hard as the power you unleashed. "
Iris clutched Lou’s sleeve without her realizing it, she felt her heart was beating in her ear to see how the divine power even more scattered. The power swirled around Abby’s body. Was that how you absorbed the black magic? Iris was unsure...
"She tried to absorb the black magic..." Iris told Lou, hoping he would come with explanation, but Lou didn’t have any idea about divine power.
"Is that even a feasible thing to do?" Lou frowned. He fixed his eyes on the Serafim and slightly moved in front of Iris to shield her if something went wrong and the backlash really happened.
"Yes, a Serafim can do that..." Iris replied. She looked around this tent and could see how the tent was shaking, as if there was a strong wind that would knock it off. The sound of it was like a howling of a banshee.
Iris stared at Liam’s expression. He clenched his jaw tightly, his eyes fixed on Abby. He was having his own battle within him. He must be fighting the urge to get Abby to stop whatever she was doing right now and followed the order that was given to him.
But then, it didn’t take long before what Lou said came true. There was this an explosion that could blind your sight for a while and a strong gush of the wind, but Lou was ready. He created a solid shield around him and Iris also Jace, Aliana and Ethan.
Not only that, Lou pushed Abby away, so the explosion from the backlash wouldn’t impact Ethan, who was very close to her.
With the gamma’s current condition, he would have died right there and then if he got a direct impact from the backlash.
Yet, Lou misjudged the divine power of the Serafim, thinking Abby was not as powerful as Iris. Even so, still, her divine power couldn’t be compared to a magic user.
Therefore, even with the solid shield around them, Iris still could feel the impact of it and the tent that covered them vanished. As if there was a fire that turned it into ashes.
Lou turned his body and hugged Iris, he buried her face against his chest, so she wouldn’t feel the strong impact of it, even when she was within his shield.
The merchant gritted his teeth, as he kept up the shield and could only be grateful because he had enough magic stone with him before he approached this tent to see her.
The shock wave of the backlash toppled a few tents around the campsite and injured a few warriors and knights around.
If Lou was not there to protect Iris, Aliana, Jace and Ethan, they would be seriously injured and the gamma wouldn’t make it.
After the shockwave subsided, you could see around the damage that it had created. It looked like there was a storm that hit this place so hard.
"Are you, okay?" Lou asked Iris when the explosion ended. He cradled Iris’s face and checked on her, looking for any sign of injury or something. Thankfully, Iris was fine, only a little bit disoriented because of what happened.
Everything happened so fast, maybe less than a minute, but the impact of it was unthinkable.
The first thing that Iris saw was Liam and Abby’s body, the knight seemed trying to protect the Serafim from the impact of the backlash and because Lou pushed the Serafim away to lessen the impact on Ethan and the other, Liam had to use his body to protect Abby. He got the brunt of it.
From the distance, Cedric came over, he shouted an order to call for the healer to check on Abby.
But, unfortunately, just like Iris, Abby’s body didn’t respond well to Grace’s healing power, but at the very least, she could still do something to Liam and know what to do with Abby, since she looked like she just lost her consciousness.
"No... no..." Iris muttered in panic, she freed herself from Lou and immediately went to check on Ethan’s condition.
It was easy to tell Abby had failed with her attempt to get rid of the black magic from Ethan. The burning scar on his left chest was still there and his body was still convulsing because he was having a hard time to breath.
Aliana immediately crawled to check on Ethan as well the moment she regained her sense and called his name a few times with trembling voice, since she didn’t know what to do.
"No. No. No! Please, please, please..." Aliana didn’t know what she had to beg for, she lifted her head and saw Iris was holding Ethan’s hand. "Luna, please... please..."
Iris just witnessed the backlash that Abby got. If she really tried and she failed, the backlash from her power probably would harm the whole people in the campsite, even Lou’s protective shield wouldn’t be able to ward it off.
But, if she didn’t try...
She was going to lose Ethan for sure...
