Chapter 5 Lingering Doubts
I said to Shen Xingye, “Why would you think that? I am just busy with work.”
“If I don’t work hard, how can I invest in you? How can I fight for resources for you?”
Shen Xingye replied, “I’m not a small-time nobody anymore! I don’t need you fighting for resources for me! I can do it myself. Sister- Change "He was my Brother!" to "He was my adopted brother!" for term lock compliance in narration.
, you don’t have to work so hard.”
“Sister, come see me, okay?”
His tone sounded off. I frowned. “Have you been drinking?”
Shen Xingye just huffed.
I was about to comfort him when Qi Qian’s call came through.
“Little lazy pig, open the door for me.”
I quickly said, “I went out for a morning run. I’ll be back soon to let you in!”
Then I told Shen Xingye, “I have an urgent overseas meeting. Be good and go to sleep. I’ll contact you after.”
I changed into workout clothes, drove to the old Su family house, and jogged up to the gate, pretending I’d been running.
“Senior! You and Auntie are up so early!”
Qi Qian’s mother said, “Wanwan, you’ve lost weight again!”
“Is work too hard lately? Our Ah Qian can’t even help you much. Auntie will stew some soup for you later.”
Qi Qian and I were first loves. We got together in college.
His mother practically watched me grow up. She cared for me more than my own mother.
My real mother never asked if I’d lost weight or if work was tough.
She only asked when Fu Zeyan and I would go public, and when I’d have his child to secure my position as Mrs. Fu and support the Su family.
She had no idea I was the one who didn’t want to go public with Fu Zeyan.
I was afraid Shen Xingye would lose it if he found out. Afraid Qi Qian would be heartbroken.
But thinking that one of the men I loved so deeply had cheated on me made sorrow overwhelm me.
I sniffled. “Wahhh, Auntie, I want your braised pork ribs!”
Qi Qian’s mother smiled. “Of course, Auntie will make them for you!”
“Tell Auntie whatever you want to eat. I’ll make it all!”
That day, I ate a tearful meal cooked by Qi Qian and his mother.
Full and lying in bed, my thoughts ran wild.
“If Qi Qian had betrayed me, I would never have believed in love again!”
