Chapter 21

Safira

“We have a photoshoot planned for tomorrow, and your scent cards will be sent out soon.” the omega social worker said as she strolled through the front courtyard of my villa. This world was so confusing. I thought I’d fallen into a perfect situation, but the rules of this society were so different. She paused to enjoy the fragrance of the flowers blooming from the vines that cascaded over the walls. I didn’t respond, only sat quietly while listening to the trickling of the fountain nearby. “Then, once your profile is ready, we can start having you meet eligible packs nearby. Obviously, you already have at least one fan.” She said as her gaze swept over the courtyard and toward my villa. There were several bouquets set up, all from my guys.

“What if I don’t want to look at any packs right now?” I asked as I stood up, crossing my arms. I already knew who I wanted. When Kaden described what it was like to meet his mate, he was describing the feeling I had every time I was with them. They were mine, registry be damned. The social worker clearly didn’t appreciate my questioning. She sighed and looked at me.

“You have to choose an alpha or a pack soon, otherwise you’ll go through excruciating pain for your first heat. Trust me, by the time it starts you’ll be begging for anyone to relieve the pain. I’m just trying to help you pick someone ahead of time so that you can make a clear-headed choice in the matter.” She said as she frowned at me.

“I’m not going to choose some people I just met to have sex with me. And I’m not going to date random strangers.” I wasn’t used to standing up for myself, but it was a new world, and a new me. All my life, I’d been overlooked and had my decisions taken from me. I wasn’t going to let the opportunity to be with the ones I really wanted slip through my fingers. The social worker’s eye twitched and she threw up her hands in exasperation.

“What is it with you new omegas from Weatherby? I swear, you're all so stubborn. What you don’t get is that omegas can’t just go through life without a pack. It’s a painful and dangerous thing to do.” She paced through the courtyard, gathering up her laptop and bag. “I swear, they need to pay me more for this!” She grumbled as she started for the door. “Don’t forget, we need to upload your photos to the site! No one will match with a blank profile!” She said over her shoulder to me before leaving. Once she was gone, I felt relief. I knew she was trying to help, but I didn’t want her to know I’d been seeing an unregistered pack.

Just then, the phone rang. I looked at it and answered immediately after seeing who it was. Jax’s soothing voice came through.

“We need to see you soon. Don't worry, everything’s being fixed.”
