Chapter Two
I sit straight up in bed, my heart pounding and my breaths harsh.
My eyes rapidly scan the room for threats, finding none I slowly lie back down, noting that Kai and Jax are no where to be found.
I’m guessing they’ve gone down for breakfast already.
Probably trying to let me get as much sleep as possible in preparation for today.
I close my eyes trying to remember exactly what the nightmare was about to have me so panicked. Just when I think I’ve finally gotten a grasp on what it was about it slips through my fingers again.
With no warning, no noise or change in air pressure, fangs are suddenly snapping in my direction, dripping with bloody saliva and aiming for my neck.
My heart jumps into my throat pushing out a yell as my body flies back into the headboard of the bed, somehow landing in a defensive crouch with my fists raised.
I ignore the calls from the guys, too consumed with checking my surroundings trying to find where that thing has suddenly disappeared.
I slowly start to relax as it’s obvious that nothing is here and I’m starting to doubt if there ever was.
It felt so real though.
Before I can process that thought fully, the door explodes off of its hinges and I duck as it flies over that bed and slams into the wall denting the plaster.
My head snaps back to the door as I move into a defensive pose thinking that the fanged thing is back.
My eyes widen and my jaw drops when instead of a fanged freak my own fanged demon is stood in the doorway, his chest rumbling with an inhuman growl, his eyes red and his fangs and claws clearly on show although longer than usual, more lethal.
I can barely make out the other guys wide-eyed, shocked faces from behind Levi who seems to have grown in height and sheer mass too. Levi lifts his nose slightly and takes a long deep inhale and then tilts his head to the side. More predator than man right now.
I should be scared but in fact I am absolutely fascinated as I watch him slowly crossing the room towards me, the guys follow a few paces behind him.
We’ve learnt that when the demon side of Levi is more in control it’s better to let him lead.
The guys are always ready to step in if they have to but they haven’t had to yet.
Levi’s demon, although savage and predatory is still Levi.
He recognises us as his family and me as his mate, as we’ve been told is what demons call their life partners or soulmates.
At my father’s instruction we haven’t really gone anywhere since Levi started to show traits of his demon half, so I will admit that I’m slightly nervous to see how he will act if someone pisses him the fuck off and they aren’t one of us.
I try to ignore the slightly inappropriate thrill that goes through me at the thought.
Levi approaches the bed that I’m still crouched on and I straighten up out of my defensive pose unaware that I was still in it in the first place.
I move to the edge of the bed but before I can put a foot on the floor Levi moves closer, even with me stood on the edge of my bed my head only just grazes Levi’s chin.
That’s how massive this latest transformation has made him.
He bends slightly and inhales deeply at my throat and then again right in front of my face, releasing a harsh growl at whatever he smells.
“Rogue Vampire!” He growls his voice deep and harsh now but strangely comforting at the same time.
“What the fuck did he just say?” Kai asks incredulously.
“Well that would explain the fangs. I didn’t think it was real though?” I watch Levi cautiously as he slowly goes back to normal although he’s still bigger than he used to be. “How could you smell it?”
“I don’t know. I couldn’t even tell you how I know that it was a rogue vampire.
” Levi says confused, wrapping me in his arms and pulling me against his chest. “Your dad did say that there were other supernaturals that attend this training academy so I assume there are vampires who can behave themselves and that not all vampires are considered rogue.”
“What in the hell is going on?” Jax asks just as incredulously as Kai.
“I had a nightmare that woke me but I couldn’t remember what it was about.
When I tried suddenly this thing was in front of me bloody fangs snapping for my face.
I was somehow instantly in a defensive position at the top of the bed but by the time I scanned the room nothing was there. ” I try to explain.
“Your mom can see snippets of the future, maybe that’s what happened?” Hunter asks contemplatively.
“Maybe although that doesn’t paint a pretty picture for our future,” I say dryly.
“No but we’ve got Levi,” Maverick chuckles, “by the way I’m not fixing that giant crater you made in Sage’s wall.”
“Fair enough that’s on me, I’ll fix it. I can’t wait until you guys get your supernatural sides unlocked. Lets see how well you handle it when she screams like that then!” Levi smirks and the others share a look.
“Ok, you guys can carry on arguing about that all you want but I need to get dressed and more importantly pack. How long have I got before we’ve got to leave?”
“About an hour or so.” Hunter grimaces and my eyes widen.
“That’s all?” I ask unnecessarily and he nods, “Damn it!”
I hop off the bed and then haphazardly start throwing items of clothing into my bag.
At least it looks haphazard but in reality I am aware of what I’m packing.
I make sure to keep a suitable outfit out for flying but also make sure it’s able to hide the weapons we’ll be carrying.
As if hearing my thoughts Jax suddenly calls out from his room across the hall.
“Don’t forget we need to arm ourselves before we leave, Little Star.”
“I haven’t!” I call back smirking.
Having stuffed all the things I deem necessary to take into two duffle bags, I grab my clothes and make my way into the bathroom.
Thanks to the guys I now own far more clothes than I ever have in the past. Just before I shut the door between the bathroom and the bedroom Knot suddenly appears and darts through the gap, using her raven form to fly herself up onto the counter and then switching back to her fox form and curling up.
“I would love to know where you go when you disappear for so long.” I say and she just tilts her head at me, not giving anything away even though we both know she could quite easily tell me if she wanted to.
“Fine, don’t tell me.” I grumble and she scoffs before settling back down and appearing to go to sleep.
I roll my eyes at the sassy little familiar and quickly hop in the shower.
When she first disappeared I panicked that she was gone forever but she came back a couple of days later and I began to understand that, that’s just how she was and although I have no idea where or even how she disappears, I will one day.
I finish with my shower in record time pulling on thicker than usual, stretchy jeans and a simple loose fitting tee that is long enough that it should hide the knife holster that I’m planning to wear around my waist. I pull out a more fashionable than functional leather jacket that has a high collar and is slightly too big for me so should easily hide any other weapons I decide to carry.
I pull on my combat boots, quickly line my eyes with eyeliner and add a swipe of mascara and then I’m good to go.
I grab my bags on the way out of the door, Knot landing on my shoulder in her raven form as I leave and I reach up with my spare arm hand to stroke the soft feathers on her chest. I dump my bags with the others by the door and make my way further into the house.
“Guys?” I call out.
“Down here!” Jax calls from the direction of the basement and I’m guessing the weapons room.
I follow his voice, noticing how quiet it is without Hunter’s dog’s Apollo and Trig around. The person that looks after them when the guys go out of town on jobs came to pick them both up yesterday morning, again far too presumptuous for my liking.
What if I hadn’t passed?
“Hey Beautiful,” Kai says pulling me towards him and kissing me softly.
“Hey,” I reply sounding slightly dreamily and making Kai chuckle.
“Don’t go over the top with the weapons. We may have clearance to fly carrying now but we don’t want to scare the other passengers by looking like we’re going to war.” Levi instructs us.
“What happened to your eyes?” I blurt out, completely tactless in my question but seeing Levi with normal green eyes that don’t even match his natural colour has shocked the shit out of me.
Of course my response makes the guys chuckle.
“Coloured contacts, Darling. They’re just for whilst we travel. We already make quite an intimidating group, if my eyes started flashing red too it’s definitely going to cause a problem.” He explains.
“Fine, that makes sense I guess.” I pout and Levi’s grin widens.
He pulls me into his arms and kisses me thoroughly, his tongue dominating mine as his grip tightens around me.
“Don’t worry Darling, as soon as it won’t cause a scene I’ll take them out.” He smirks, deliberately flashing fang and knowing how much I love it.
“Deal,” I reply, “right weapons,” I say out loud to remind myself of what I’m supposed to be doing right now.
You’d think that after the incident with the fangs this morning I wouldn’t have the same reaction to Levi’s but it hasn’t made a blind bit of difference. Levi would never hurt me and he’s mine.
“Why are we flying commercially? Why can’t we go in the jet?” Kai suddenly asks midway through strapping a knife to his thigh and distracting me from my thoughts.
“Good question, and one that I have no idea the answer to.” I reply frowning.
“To be honest though there’s a lot of things that don’t seem to add up about this whole situation,” Mav says, “we have a lot more questions than answers right now.”
I nod my head in agreement.
