Chapter Nineteen #2
“Hunt do you think you could tell them that if anyone comes they need to make themselves scarce but meet back here in an hour or so. Or wait for you to call them back?” Jax suggests, I watch impressed as he pulls a droplet of water from a nearby leaf and starts playing with it absently.
“My gift is growing its becoming much easier.” He explains when he catches me watching him.
“That is so cool.” Sage says, clearly impressed and making Jax practically glow from the compliment.
He spent so long being scared of other peoples reactions to his scars, even if they were hidden that he’s not used to the open affection that Sage gives him. I am so happy that he gets it now. He deserves it.
“That sounds like a great idea, at least it would be if I knew how to do it.” Hunter replies scrubbing his hand through his hair a sure sign that he’s starting to get frustrated.
“I don’t know what to suggest. We haven’t learnt much about your gift yet. Only what I’ve already told you.” Kysen shrugs.
“Just follow your instinct.” Sage suggests walking up to him and placing her hand on his chest, his face softens as he gazes down at her. “It’s worked so far. It’s worth a try.” She shrugs.
He holds her hand to his chest right above his heart as he bends down and kisses her. His supernatural size is truly impressive and it makes me grin when I notice that he has to bend his knees slightly in order to kiss her properly even though she’s on her tiptoes.
“Alright Sweetheart.” He says when he pulls back. “It’s worth a shot.”
We all stand silently as we watch him close his eyes and take a deep breath.
I can’t see what he’s doing but from the look on wonder on Sage’s face I’d guess that she can see something that we can’t.
After a few moments Hunt’s horse comes up to him and nudges his chest with its head.
Hunter opens his eyes and gently strokes the horses nose.
The horse snorts before turning around and trotting off through the trees the other horses following him.
“I think it worked.” Hunter says.
“Well I’d say they definitely understood something.” I say, smiling.
“Lets just hope that you told them the right the thing and you haven’t just freed them or told them to go catch dinner.” Kai smirks entirely unhelpfully.
Sage smirks as she smacks him lightly on the chest.
“I saw your magic it was so pretty.” Sage says. “It’s never happened before, it was pretty damn amazing to see it weaving through the animals though.”
“That is so cool.” Kysen mutters. “Your gifts must be developing.”
“Would’ve been handy to know exactly what the magic was telling them to do.” Kai smirks again deliberately trying to goad Hunt.
“Real helpful man.” Hunt grumbles.
“Alright guys, chill it we’ve got a job to do.” I remind them before the argument devolves. “Follow me. Stay alert, weapons ready.” I order.
Sage follows as quickly as the guys do and for once without question, its hot as fuck and now is not the time to get a fucking hard dick. Maverick chuckles quietly next to me clearly guessing my issues.
“It’s hot when she follows orders isn’t it?” He asks rhetorically, “Almost as hot as when she doesn’t.” He adds, his smirk betraying his desire.
Maverick has unexpected likes when it comes to sex. He gets so easily flustered and anxious in day to day life but that side of him completely disappears when it comes to the bedroom. I have no doubt that Sage will pleasantly surprise and easily meet him in his desires.
“That’s an interesting side to you.” Sage comments as she walks past.
“How in the hell did she do that, I had no idea she was even there until she spoke.” I comment.
She looks back at us.
“I’m looking forward to seeing just how many ways I can disobey you and what happens when I do.” She smirks.
My jaw drops.
I love it when she does that.
It’s hot as hell, Maverick clearly thinks so too as he takes a step forward and smirks promising all sorts of things, the look darkening his features and a low growl in his chest. Oh yeah Sage wound him up good.
Instead of her backing down like I thought she would Sage’s grin just widens as her eyes heat.
“Guys!” Jax reminds us, smirking himself.
“The amount of sexual tension between you all is off the fucking charts.” Kysen mutters. “Come on, you come with me trouble.” He says to Sage who chuckles but follows after him the rest of us close behind.
“Like you're not.” She retorts and he just grins.
“Ok focus. We need to find the least inconspicuous way in.” I order trying to get everyone back on track. Mav literally shakes himself and I repress my urge to grin.
Everyone focuses again as we slowly make our way through the thick trees before we finally get a close up view of the Cursed City.
Like some of the other towns we’ve come across so far it is surrounded by a giant dark grey, stone wall.
Every couple hundred feet there are guard stations set up on top of the wall and guards walking in between them too.
These aren’t typical military guards like you’d expect a normal town might have if preparing to defend itself from attack.
No, these guards are dressed in dark colours sure but its definitely not a uniform of any kind.
I can just make out the glowing ends of lit cigarettes and several of them having loud conversations and laughing.
This is definitely not run like a military operation.
One thing that does work in our favour is that they seem to have dropped their guards somewhat.
Over confident in the fact that several Enforcer teams have not been able to successfully get in.
“The lookouts are new.” Kysen says and I raise my eyebrow, silently asking him to elaborate. “We got curious and started asking questions, we were shut down pretty damn quickly, that was all we could figure out.”
“Fair enough. Split up into two teams, we’ll go left you guys go right.” I order, “Be careful, they may look like they aren’t paying attention but we don’t want to risk it.”
“Got it boss.” Jax says as him, Hunter and Mav walk in the other direction.
“Use the Bond lines if you get in trouble. I keep forgetting we have them.” I admit.
I’m not used to working operations with the use of the Bond link.
We stick to the trees as we start to explore the perimeter.
The dim early morning light aiding us in our attempt to remain unseen.
We’ve been walking for ten minutes when we hear a commotion and pause.
Up ahead a man is dragged kicking and screaming away from the wide metal gates, that must be the main entrance.
Before we can do anything to help, one of the guards stabs him through the stomach with his sword the bloodied tip appearing out of his back.
He grins viciously as he makes vines appear from the ground and commands them to wrap around the guys neck agonisingly slowly.
The other guard clearly has better places to be because he swoops in and severs the guy’s head from his body.
Its done casually and business like, with no remorse or hesitation that speaks testament to what its really like to live here.
A thud behind me has me spinning on my heel along with Kysen and Kai, I assess the scene in seconds and it still doesn’t make much sense.
Just behind where Kysen was stood before he turned is the crumpled body of a large guard, he has a dagger in the middle of his dark green forehead.
I watch in shock as Sage makes short work of decapitating the guard and then turns to us.
“What?”
“You just saved my life.” Kysen says in shock, his eyes wide.
