Epilogue
Alex
I haven’t been able to stop grinning since yesterday. After dealing with Fiona being in labor but not wanting to go to the hospital, it finally hit me I was going to be a dad. Don’t get me wrong, I knew I was going to be a dad all along, but it became real in that moment. Driving through our town and to the hospital, I was more scared that she might have our baby in the car. And if I wasn’t sure I was ready to be a dad, I knew I wasn’t ready to deliver a freaking baby. Thankfully, we made it just in time.
Walking back into the hospital room, I make a beeline for Fiona. The woman I’m going to marry one day. But for now, we’re going to take it slow. Neither of us wants to go faster than necessary. We already have a baby together. Last night we agreed we would hold off on making anymore big decisions. Enjoy our lives as is.
“Here you go, love.” Giving her a chaste kiss, I hand over the coffee. I went out and grabbed after she begged me. And I could never say no to her.
“Thank you,” she mutters against the disposable cup as she takes a huge gulp. “Mmm, that tastes good.”
“How is our angel?” I ask as I place my cup down on the table next to the bed, then go in and take Callie from her. When I get her into my arms, the smile on my face grows bigger. I’m not sure when I’ve ever felt this happy. As soon as little Callie was born, I knew being her dad was always going to be my destiny. Yes, being a realtor is fun, challenging, and I always thought that’s where I was successful, but looking into these little gray eyes, I know that’s not true.
Giving the baby a small kiss on her head, I breathe in her scent. She’s a mixture of milk, her mom, and me. The smell of our family.
Glancing up at Fiona, I see her staring at us with starry eyes. She must feel it too. That this was always meant to be. Now that the baby is here and well, I’m ready to get my family home. “Did the doctor say when we can go home?”
“Yeah. He said if everything is still looking good for me in a few hours they’ll release me. Which I hope happens because I’m ready to get her home.”
“Me too. I talked with Dexter and Mateo. They’re all going to meet us at the house. Hazel yelled something in the background about bringing food.”
“Oh, thank god. I’m ready for something other than hospital food. I can’t imagine staying here even longer. You would be sneaking food in for me.”
Bending over, I give Fiona a kiss, deepening it for a split second. When I pull away, I whisper against her lips, “Anything for you, love.”
And I mean it. Since the moment I met Fiona, I knew she was different. I was just too scared to admit it or take the plunge. But when she came back into my life dropping this wonderful bomb in my lap, I knew I would keep her forever.
A few hours later, Fiona and Callie are discharged from the hospital. I’ve never been so grateful that everything turned out well. Other than that, once Callie decided to come, she came, and fast. Everyone is healthy. Now I’m ready to get home and show our angel where she’s going to live.
When we pull into the driveway, I’m relieved to see that neither of my brothers are here yet, but I know it’ll be soon. None of us are good at keeping boundaries for too long. We’ve been apart of each other for our whole lives, only depending on each other. Now our family is expanding.
Opening the front door, I turn the car seat so our little girl can see our house. “This is where we live, baby girl.”
I place her seat down and take her out to continue the tour of the house. Fiona and I casually walk as we explain each room and their importance. When we reach her room, Callie fusses in my arms. Fiona takes her from me, sitting down in the rocker. She pulls her shirt up and latches Callie. “Oh, my. You were hungry, weren’t you?” she coos as Callie is suckling away.
Leaning against the doorway, I can’t help but be amazed as our future plays out in front of me. Our wedding day. Fiona and Callie baking cookies in the kitchen. Fiona becoming pregnant again. Kids playing in the backyard. Family dinners. Our kids growing up and going to school. Us living in this place as we grow old.
“Are you just going to stand there and stare at me?” Fiona chirps at me looking up from where she’s feeding our angel.
“Of course. It’s the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen. How could I look away?”
“You’re so cheesy.” She laughs.
Pushing off the wall, I head over to her, grinning. Bending over, I mutter against her lips. “Only for you.”
When the doorbell rings, Igroan, “How can they be here already?”
“They’re just excited to meetCallie. Why don’t you go in and let everyone in? I’ll be down as soon as I’m done feeding her.”
“Sounds like a plan.” After giving her a chaste kiss, I leave her to feed our angel.
When I open the front door, both of my brothers, their significant others, and Oliver are standing there. “Come on in. I’m surprised you rang the doorbell.”
Hazel chimes in, “I made sure they did to give Fiona a moment.”
“Thank you, Haze.” She nods as she hands me the food they brought from Fiona’s favorite restaurant. Placing it on the dining room table, I move to the kitchen to grab plates.
“Fiona will be down in a moment.”
As we pull out the food, Fiona walks through the doorway holding Callie. “Mmm, that smells good.” She hands me the baby and grabs a plate, piling it with food.
I take the moment to introduce my daughter to everyone. I hold up our baby Lion King style. “Everyone meet Callie.”
Cradling her into my chest, I kiss her softly. “Callie, this is your family.”
