CHAPTER 54

A Dance Without Music

The rooftop band packed up at ten, leaving behind the ghost of jazz and a small open space near the glass wall where couples had been dancing earlier.

Elise noticed it first. Daniel saw her notice it, saw her eyes follow the empty patch of floor, saw the thought arrive before she could decide whether to confess it.

Marcus saw it too.

That was the trouble with men trained to observe. Nothing stayed hidden long enough to become harmless.

'You want to dance,' Daniel said.

Elise's blush was immediate. 'There is no music.'

'That was not a denial.'

She looked between him and Marcus. 'It was a practical objection.'

Marcus's voice was quiet. 'There is still rhythm up here.'

Daniel glanced at him. The wind moved through the terrace. Glasses rang softly behind the bar. Elevator doors opened and closed in the distance. The city below made its endless low murmur. He hated how right Marcus was.

Elise looked at Daniel first. Always first, tonight. That had become its own tenderness.

'Would that be too much?' she asked.

The old Daniel would have asked what exactly she meant, forcing her to draw the desire in humiliating detail so he could decide how much of it to punish himself with. The man sitting there now understood that clarity did not require cruelty.

'A dance with him?' he asked.

'Only if you want to see it.'

Marcus did not move. 'And only if Daniel asks me.'

The condition landed hard. Daniel felt the transfer of agency like a weight placed carefully into his hands. Marcus would not take the dance from Elise's wanting alone. He would not take it from Daniel's fear either. He waited for invitation.

Daniel looked at his wife. She was not begging. She was letting herself be seen wanting something. That was braver.

He stood. 'Marcus.'

Marcus rose.

Daniel's voice came rougher than he intended. 'Dance with my wife. Slowly. Hands where I can see them.'

A spark moved through Elise's eyes. Marcus nodded once. 'Yes.'

They walked to the open space together. Daniel remained at the table, one hand resting on the back of Elise's empty chair. The absence of her beside him felt physical. It also felt chosen.

Marcus faced Elise without touching her at first. He offered a hand. She placed hers in it after looking back at Daniel. He nodded.

Only then did Marcus set his other hand lightly at her upper back.

They began to move without music.

It should have looked awkward. It did not.

Elise followed the gentle pressure of his lead, her blue dress swaying around her knees, her face turned slightly away as if the intensity of eye contact would make the dance too bright.

Marcus gave her room. He did not pull her against him.

He did not make the dance a claim. That restraint was somehow more intimate than possession.

Daniel's jealousy rose clean and sharp.

Beside it rose something else.

Pride.

His wife was beautiful under the rooftop lights, wanted by a man who treated wanting like responsibility, and she kept glancing back at Daniel as if his watching was not a wound but part of the embrace.

When the dance ended, Marcus released her hand first and stepped back. Elise remained still for a heartbeat, breathing carefully. Then she returned to Daniel.

He stood before she reached him. She did not sit. She went straight into his arms.

'Still with me?' she whispered.

Daniel looked over her shoulder at Marcus, then closed his eyes against Elise's hair.

'More than before,' he said.

Her arms tightened around him.

Across the terrace, Marcus turned toward the city, giving them the privacy of being held in public.
