CHAPTER 55

The Ride Down

They left the rooftop together, but not carelessly.

Marcus insisted on walking them to the elevators and no farther unless invited.

Daniel appreciated the line and resented the temptation to erase it.

Elise had gone quiet after the dance, not withdrawn, but inward.

The blue dress moved around her legs with each step, and Daniel kept remembering Marcus's hand at her back, the perfect courtesy of it, the way her body had answered restraint.

At the elevators, the three of them waited beneath a brass number display that ticked upward far too slowly.

'Thank you for tonight,' Elise said.

Marcus looked at her, then at Daniel. 'Thank you for trusting me with a small part of it.'

Daniel felt the phrase small part settle in him. It was accurate. Marcus was not the center. The marriage was. The wanting moved around it like weather around a house that had finally opened its windows.

The elevator arrived empty.

Daniel stepped in first, then Elise. Marcus remained outside.

Elise turned. Surprise flickered across her face. 'You are not coming down?'

'Not unless Daniel asks.'

There it was again, the discipline that made the invitation heavier.

Daniel could have let the doors close. It would have been cleaner. Safer. It would also have left the night unfinished in a way that would make the ride home louder than honesty.

He held the door with one hand. 'Come down with us.'

Marcus entered.

The elevator doors closed, sealing the city away. The mirrored walls multiplied them: Daniel in his dark jacket, Elise between them, Marcus standing near the buttons with his hands visible at his sides. No one spoke for six floors.

The descent gave Daniel too many versions of himself. In one reflection, he looked tense. In another, almost calm. In another, he saw his wife watching him instead of Marcus, her expression open and asking.

He reached for her hand.

She took it immediately.

Marcus watched the numbers drop.

At the twenty-first floor, the elevator stopped. Two guests entered, laughing over a phone screen, and the private charge shattered into public normalcy. Elise moved closer to Daniel to make room. Marcus stepped back. The strangers saw nothing but three people leaving a lounge.

Daniel nearly laughed at the absurd relief of being anonymous.

When the guests exited on twelve, the silence returned changed. Less dangerous. More shared.

'That helped,' Daniel said.

Elise looked up. 'What did?'

'Other people getting on. Reminder that the world is not watching us nearly as closely as we are watching ourselves.'

Marcus's mouth curved. 'That is often true.'

'You sound like a man who has stood in many corners.'

'I have.'

'What do people reveal when they think no one important is looking?' Elise asked.

Marcus met her eyes in the mirror. 'Usually what they are afraid to ask for.'

The elevator reached the lobby with a soft chime.

Daniel felt the sentence follow them out.

In the bright lobby, everything became easier and harder. Easier because the spell thinned beneath chandeliers and front-desk smiles. Harder because none of them could pretend the spell had not existed.

Outside, valet attendants moved between cars. Night air smelled of pavement, perfume, and distant rain.

Marcus stopped before the curb. 'This is where I say goodnight.'

Daniel nodded. 'Yes.'

Elise's disappointment appeared and stayed this time. She did not hide it quickly enough. Daniel saw Marcus see it. He also saw Marcus do nothing with it.

That restraint became the point of the whole night.

Daniel stepped closer to his wife and placed a hand at her lower back, where Marcus's hand had been higher, lighter, more careful. 'Goodnight, Marcus.'

'Goodnight, Daniel. Elise.'

He walked away first.

Elise leaned into Daniel's touch as they waited for their car.

'He keeps leaving,' she said softly.

Daniel kissed her temple. 'That may be why I keep letting him return.'
