CHAPTER 86
Between Two Yeses
Marcus rose with the careful restraint of a man approaching not a woman, but a boundary. Daniel stood behind Elise's chair with both hands resting over hers. He could feel her pulse through her fingers, quick and bright. He could feel his own heartbeat answering it from somewhere deep in his chest.
'May I touch your shoulder?' Marcus asked.
Elise's answer came softly. 'Yes.'
Marcus looked to Daniel.
The second yes belonged to him. It should have felt ceremonial, perhaps even absurd. Instead it felt like holding a key he had been afraid to admit was in his hand.
'Yes,' Daniel said.
Marcus placed his hand on Elise's shoulder.
The configuration changed everything.
Daniel had thought standing behind her would make him feel powerful.
It did, but not in the way he expected. It was not domination.
It was stewardship. He felt the tremor that moved through Elise before Marcus could see it.
He felt the way her fingers pressed up into his palms. He felt her response travel backward into him first, before it entered the room.
Elise made a small sound, not loud, not performative, simply honest.
Daniel bent closer, his mouth near her hair but not touching. 'Report.'
She turned her face slightly, enough that he could see the flushed line of her cheek. 'I feel surrounded.'
His grip tightened.
'Good surrounded or too much surrounded?'
'Good. Intense. I know where you are.'
Marcus's hand did not move.
Daniel looked at that hand over the charcoal dress, then at Elise's face, then down at his own hands covering hers. The image was exactly what he had feared and exactly what he had asked to see. Desire did not always arrive with the courtesy of choosing one meaning.
'Do you want him to stop?' Daniel asked.
Elise breathed in. 'Not yet.'
The words passed through Daniel like heat.
Not yet.
He understood suddenly why limits had to be spoken before the body started telling its own persuasive stories. Not yet could be safe when stop remained real. Not yet could be exquisite when no one was trapped inside it.
Marcus looked at Daniel. 'Are you still with this?'
The question pulled him back from the image. Daniel appreciated it even as part of him resented the interruption.
'Yes,' he said. Then, because honesty had demanded payment all night, he added, 'More than I expected.'
Elise's fingers flexed beneath his.
Marcus lifted his hand away.
Daniel almost protested. The impulse shocked him.
Marcus saw it. Of course he did. He did not smile. He only said, 'Better to end the first time before wanting decides it should choose for you.'
Daniel let out a shaking breath. 'That is infuriatingly reasonable.'
Elise laughed, but the laugh broke a little at the end. Daniel released one of her hands only long enough to stroke her hair once, a tender gesture that belonged entirely to them.
'Come here,' he said.
She stood and turned into him. Her arms went around his waist. His arms closed around her shoulders, over the place Marcus had touched, reclaiming nothing because nothing had been taken, but reminding his own body of the order of things.
Marcus stepped back toward the table.
Elise whispered against Daniel's chest, 'I liked that too much.'
Daniel closed his eyes. 'I know.'
'Does that scare you?'
'Yes.'
'Does it change your yes?'
He opened his eyes and looked over her shoulder at Marcus, then down at the woman in his arms.
'No,' he said. 'But it changes how careful I want to be with it.'
Elise nodded against him.
The night had not become easier.
It had become more honest.
