CHAPTER 87

The Long Walk Back

They ended the library session before midnight.

Daniel was the one who called it, though calling it felt less like stopping and more like closing a valuable book before the pages became too hot to handle.

Marcus accepted the decision with a simple nod.

Elise looked relieved and disappointed in equal measure, which Daniel found painfully beautiful.

The three of them stood near the glass doors while the club settled into its late-night hush. Beyond the reading room, most of the lamps had been dimmed. A bartender polished stemware behind a distant counter. Rain had begun again, fine silver lines against the city windows.

'Thank you,' Elise said to Marcus.

The words were simple, but Daniel heard all the meanings underneath. Thank you for stopping. Thank you for asking. Thank you for touching only what we named. Thank you for not making us regret our courage.

Marcus inclined his head. 'Thank both of you for your trust.'

Daniel expected jealousy to flare at that, but what he felt was stranger. Recognition. Marcus had not taken trust from them. He had carried it carefully for a while and returned it intact.

'We will talk before anything else is planned,' Daniel said.

'Good,' Marcus replied. 'Do not let the memory of intensity make decisions tonight.'

Elise's mouth curved. 'You are very committed to being reasonable.'

'Someone in the room should be.'

Daniel surprised himself by laughing. 'I resent that and appreciate it.'

They parted without ceremony. No dramatic hand lingering.

No last charged touch. Marcus remained by the library while Daniel and Elise crossed the reading room together.

Daniel kept his hand at the small of her back, then moved it higher with a private jolt when he realized he had placed it almost exactly where Marcus had.

Elise noticed too.

She looked up at him, eyes bright.

'Mine,' Daniel said quietly, then immediately wondered if the word was too crude, too possessive, too honest.

Elise leaned closer. 'Yours,' she answered. 'And still mine.'

The correction steadied him. Not a rebuke. A balance.

They took the elevator down in silence. Their reflections stood beside them in the mirrored doors: Elise flushed and elegant, Daniel pale with the aftershock of his own consent, both of them changed in ways no stranger in the lobby could have guessed.

Outside, the rain had cooled the pavement. Daniel opened the passenger door for her, and she paused before getting in.

'I need to say something before we go home,' she said.

His stomach tightened. 'Say it.'

'Tonight made me want more.'

The words hurt because they were true, and because he had wanted her to trust him enough to say them.

He nodded slowly. 'It made me want more too.'

Her face softened with relief so sharp it nearly broke him.

'But not because tonight was not enough,' he continued. 'Because tonight was careful enough to make more imaginable.'

Elise stepped into him under the awning, rain whispering beyond them. 'That is exactly it.'

Daniel rested his forehead against hers.

'No decisions tonight,' he said.

'No decisions tonight.'

They drove home through wet streets, city lights stretched long across the windshield. Elise kept her hand on Daniel's thigh, not teasing, not demanding, simply there. Every few miles, he placed his hand over hers.

At home, they did not rush upstairs. They stood in the entryway under the familiar light, surrounded by mail on the console table and shoes near the wall and all the ordinary evidence of a life that had somehow survived the extraordinary.

Daniel touched her shoulder where Marcus had touched her.

Elise covered his hand with hers.

'Report,' she whispered, turning the word back on him.

He smiled despite himself. 'Terrified. Aroused. In love with you. Annoyed that Marcus gives good advice.'

She laughed into his chest.

He held her there, and for the first time all night, no one else was in the room.
