CHAPTER 88

Aftercare

Morning did not arrive gently so much as honestly.

Daniel woke before Elise and lay still while gray light filled the bedroom.

The previous night returned in fragments: Marcus's hand on Elise's shoulder, Elise's eyes on him, his own hands over hers, the startling impulse to ask for one more second after Marcus stopped.

That last part unsettled him most.

It was easier to understand Elise's wanting.

She had been admired, touched carefully, invited to feel desired without being rushed.

Daniel could honor that. His own wanting felt more complicated, less flattering.

He had wanted to watch. Then he had wanted to remain inside the watching.

Then, when the touch ended, some hungry part of him had wanted to negotiate with restraint.

Beside him, Elise stirred. 'You're thinking loudly.'

He turned his head. 'Sorry.'

'Do not apologize. Report.'

The word made him smile, then sigh.

'I keep thinking about when he stopped.'

Elise's expression sharpened with concern. 'Was it bad?'

'No. That is the problem. I wanted him not to.'

She went still, then reached for him under the blanket. 'That is not a problem by itself.'

'It feels like one.'

'Because you think wanting more means losing control?'

Daniel stared at the ceiling. Trust Elise to find the hinge of the fear without prying the door off.

'Yes.'

She propped herself on one elbow. Her hair fell around her face, soft and ordinary and devastating. 'Then maybe the rule is not that wanting more is dangerous. Maybe the rule is that wanting more means we slow down, not speed up.'

He looked at her.

'That sounds like Marcus,' he said.

'Unfortunately, yes.'

They laughed, and the room became breathable again.

Aftercare, Daniel realized, was not only what happened after touch.

It was the morning conversation. The naming of strange feelings before they hardened into shame.

The cup of coffee Elise brought him later without asking.

The way she sat beside him on the sofa and put her bare feet under his thigh as if nothing in the world could make her less his wife.

They made a list on a yellow legal pad because Daniel trusted lists when his emotions were too unruly to trust themselves.

What worked.

What hurt.

What surprised us.

What must not change.

Under what worked, Elise wrote: Daniel stayed physically close. Marcus asked every time. No one rushed. We came home together.

Under what hurt, Daniel wrote: The second before I knew whether she would come back to me with her eyes.

Elise read it and covered her mouth.

'I did come back,' she said.

'I know. That is why I could keep going.'

Under what surprised us, he wrote: I wanted the touch to continue.

Elise touched the sentence with two fingers, almost reverently.

'That one matters,' she said.

'I know.'

Under what must not change, Elise wrote first: Daniel gets the truth before anyone gets the performance.

The sentence made his throat close.

He took the pen and added: Elise never has to pretend not to want something in order to protect me.

She read it twice. Then she climbed into his lap, fully dressed in an old sweater and sleep shorts, and held his face in both hands.

'I do not want a version of this where I become brave and you become silent,' she said.

'I do not want a version where I become controlling and call it love.'

'Then we keep writing it down.'

He nodded.

The legal pad sat on the coffee table between their mugs like a contract no one had forced them to sign.

By afternoon, neither of them had texted Marcus.

That restraint felt like progress too.
