Chapter 3 Agreement

“You’re willing to go to Heishui Sect?”

My Master sounded shocked and suspicious.

Heishui Sect sat in the far northeast of the cultivation world—

an ancient sect thousands of years old.

When Wentian Sect was founded, our ancestor signed a contract with them.

Heishui Sect provided the resources to establish the sect.

In return, every three hundred years Wentian Sect had to send one exceptionally talented disciple to study there—

sometimes for decades, sometimes for centuries.

At first the contract was honored.

But over time the northeast lost talent.

Heishui Sect faded, while Wentian Sect flourished.

The northeast was bitterly cold and remote.

No one in Wentian Sect wanted to send their geniuses there.

Yet the three-hundred-year deadline had arrived.

The whole sect was worried.

My voluntary request solved an urgent problem—

and earned my Master favor with the sect leader.

But I had always been proud and competitive.

I trained hardest, had the strongest temper, and strove to be first in everything.

So my Master didn’t believe I would leave so easily.

I was his most talented disciple.

He wanted to punish me, not lose me.

Lin Yuan'er feared I might change my mind.

She tugged my Master’s hand and cooed.

“Since Senior Sister sincerely repents, let her go.”

“It’s only a few decades. She’ll come back.”

My Master's brow gradually relaxed.

“Fine. Going there to temper your character isn’t a bad idea.”

He assumed I wouldn’t last long.

The last exchange student took one look at the mountain gate and begged to return.

He thought soon I would be ground down,

begging to come back—

and finally learn to be as gentle and obedient as Lin Yuan'er.

He didn’t know I had no intention of ever returning.

While I packed, Lin Yuan'er came to find me.

Triumph shone in her eyes.

“Senior Sister Mingxi, thank you for your generosity.”

“Do you know? My Master just agreed to let me manage the spirit beast garden too.”

I looked at her calmly.

From the day she joined Wentian Sect, everyone adored her.

My Master favored her. The disciples spoiled her.

I never tried to compete for any of it.

Yet she seemed to enjoy taking things from me.

The spirit beast garden was one of Wentian Sect’s most important assets.

I had earned the right to manage it through years of contribution.

Now my Master handed it to her so easily.

Very well.

I would give her one last gift.

I held out a key.

“This opens the pool behind the mountain.”

“A flood dragon sleeps there. Do not disturb it.”

Lin Yuan'er snatched the key.

“I don’t need you telling me what to do.”
