Chapter 40
Camille’s Ultimatum
T he evening air was thick with rain as Nate sat alone in the dim glow of his study. The house felt heavy — the quiet weighed on him like a stone, pressing deeper with every passing day. His phone buzzed on the desk. He glanced at the screen: Camille.
He hesitated, then answered.
“Where are you?” Camille’s voice was sharp, urgent.
“Home,” Nate said, trying to keep his tone even, but it came out strained.
There was a pause.
“I’m coming over,” she said.
“No, Camille—”
“Don’t tell me what to do, Nate. I’m done with waiting in the shadows.”
The line went dead before he could reply.
Minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Nate’s heart slammed against his ribs. He didn’t want this confrontation, but here it was—unavoidable.
He opened the door.
Camille stood there, rain slicking her dark hair, eyes blazing with a mix of desperation and fury. She didn’t wait for an invitation. She stepped inside.
“I want to be more than the secret, Nate,” she said, voice low but fierce. “I want you to choose me. Fully. Or I walk away.”
Nate swallowed, feeling the walls close in. The life he tried to hold together was unraveling fast, and Camille was pulling harder than ever.
“I can’t just walk away,” he whispered.
She shook her head. “You will. Or I will.”
The storm outside thundered as the tension inside reached a breaking point.
Camille’s eyes locked onto his, fierce and unrelenting. “Nate, how long do you think you can keep living this lie? Pretending to be a husband and father while sneaking around behind their backs?”
His jaw clenched. “You don’t get to lecture me. You’re the one who chose to be part of this.”
She stepped closer, the scent of rain and something wild wrapped around her. “I didn’t ask to be the secret anymore. I want to be your future, not your dirty little secret.”
His voice dropped, rough with frustration and something darker. “You want to control me? Dictate how this ends?”
“No,” she whispered, voice almost a growl, “I want you to choose. Me, or everything else.”
Nate’s hands shook, anger and desire warring inside him. The weight of his promises, the guilt, the passion—it all crashed together like a violent storm.
“Don’t think I’m just here for your convenience,” Camille said, stepping even closer, their breaths mingling. “I want the whole damn thing, Nate. All or nothing.”
He looked away, pain cutting through him. “I don’t know if I can give you that.”
Her fingers curled around his wrist, hard and demanding. “Then don’t waste my time.”
The room seemed to pulse with tension, their unspoken battles raging beneath the surface. Camille’s ultimatum wasn’t just words—it was a reckoning.
Nate stood frozen, caught between the life he was losing and the dangerous pull of what he could never fully have.
Camille’s grip tightened on Nate’s wrist, her eyes burning with a fierce intensity. “I’m done being the shadow you hide behind. Either I’m in your life—completely—or I walk away forever.”
Nate’s heart pounded, torn between desire, guilt, and fear. “This isn’t fair, Camille. None of this is fair.”
“Fair?” She scoffed. “You want fairness? Look at what you’ve done—to your wife, your children. I’m the only one here fighting for something real.”
Her words hit him like a slap.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the hallway—soft but unmistakable.
“Ava?” Nate whispered, panic flaring in his chest.
Before either of them could react, the door to the study creaked open wider, revealing Ava and Caleb standing frozen in the doorway. Their eyes wide, disbelief etched on their faces as they took in Camille’s presence.
Ava’s voice was barely a whisper, trembling with shock. “Who… who are you?”
Camille’s gaze flicked to the children, a dark smile playing on her lips. “I’m the woman your father wants.”
Caleb stepped forward, jaw tight, his quiet rage simmering just beneath the surface. “You’re not welcome here.”
Nate’s heart shattered watching his children face this stranger—the woman who had shattered their family from the inside.
“Camille,” Nate said, voice strained, “this isn’t the time. Please—”
But Camille was unyielding, the chaos she’d brought crashing into their lives all at once.
Ava’s eyes filled with tears as the cold truth settled around them like a storm.
Camille stepped forward, unflinching in the face of the children’s icy stares. “I’m not leaving,” she said firmly. “Nate and I have a life together, whether you want to accept it or not.”
Ava’s voice cracked as she took a step closer to Caleb. “You’re tearing our family apart.”
Caleb’s eyes flashed with anger. “You don’t belong here.”
Nate’s chest tightened. He tried to move between Camille and the kids, but she held her ground, meeting his gaze with a challenging smirk.
“This ends now,” Nate said quietly, his voice strained with the weight of years of secrets. “Camille, please—go home.”
“No,” she said, her voice cold and unwavering. “I’m done waiting in the shadows. It’s time you all face the truth.”
Ava wiped a tear from her cheek, swallowing the lump in her throat. “Mom’s sick because of this. Because of you.”
Camille’s face flickered with a hint of guilt, but it was gone in an instant, replaced by steely resolve.
Nate’s hands clenched into fists. The woman he thought he could control was slipping beyond his grasp—and with her came the ruin of everything he’d tried to protect.
Nate took a deep breath, forcing himself to steady the storm raging inside him. He stepped forward, placing himself firmly between Camille and his children. “Enough,” he said, voice low but firm. “This isn’t how any of this ends.”
Ava’s eyes flashed with defiance. “Dad, how can you say that? After everything? Mom is heart broken because of this—because of you and her.”
Caleb’s fists clenched at his sides. “We deserve the truth, not more lies.”
Nate’s throat tightened. The weight of their anger and pain bore down on him, more suffocating than any secret could. “I’m trying,” he whispered, almost to himself. “I don’t want to lose any of you.”
Camille watched the exchange silently for a moment, then shook her head. “You say that now, Nate. But words aren’t enough.”
Ava took a shaky step closer. “We’re not going to pretend anymore. We see what’s been happening, and it’s tearing us apart.”
Caleb’s voice was cold but raw. “We’re not your kids anymore if you keep choosing her over us.”
Nate’s heart shattered in pieces. The fragile threads holding their family together were unraveling faster than he could grasp.
“Please,” he pleaded, voice breaking. “Let me fix this. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Ava’s gaze softened just a fraction, but the pain in her eyes remained. “You should have thought of that before.”
Camille crossed her arms, unwavering. “This is the reckoning, Nate. No more running.”
The room fell into a heavy silence, the truth laid bare between them — raw, painful, and unstoppable.
◆◆◆
Lila had been resting quietly in the living room, the weight of exhaustion pressing heavily on her chest. The soft hum of the late afternoon filled the house, a fragile calm she desperately clung to. Then came the sudden clatter—the unmistakable sound of raised voices echoing down the hallway.
Her heart jolted. Slowly, painfully, she pushed herself up from the couch, every movement a battle against the weariness that had become her constant companion.
As she approached the doorway, the voices grew clearer. She recognized Nate’s voice—urgent, strained—and then there was another, colder, more defiant. And then she saw her.
Camille stood in the hallway, face illuminated by the fading light, eyes locked on Nate as if daring anyone to challenge her presence. Lila’s breath caught in her throat. The woman she had suspected but never confronted—now here, in her home, in her life.
For a moment, time seemed to freeze. Lila’s gaze flicked to her children—Ava and Caleb—standing tense and wide-eyed nearby. The shock was written plainly across their faces, mirrored by the storm of emotions raging inside her.
“Camille,” Lila’s voice was quiet but carried an edge of steel. “What are you doing here?”
Camille’s eyes flicked to Lila, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them. “I’m here because Nate won’t let me go. Because this family—your family—is already broken.”
Lila’s lips pressed into a thin line. The exhaustion gave way to something colder, a steely resolve that had been buried beneath the pain. “This is my home. You are not welcome.”
Nate stepped forward, caught between the two women, the tension thick enough to choke on.
“Lila,” he said softly, “I didn’t want this to happen like this.”
She looked at him, her eyes tired but unyielding. “Maybe it’s time we all faced the truth.”
The silence that followed Lila’s words was suffocating, each breath heavy with unspoken pain.
Ava’s eyes filled with tears, her hands trembling at her sides. “Mom… we didn’t want you to find out like this.”
Caleb stood stiffly beside her, fists clenched, jaw tight. “We’re sorry, mom. We tried to protect you.”
Lila’s gaze softened momentarily, a flicker of sadness crossing her face. “You don’t have to apologize. None of this is your fault.”
Camille took a step closer, her voice low and venomous. “You’ve been sick and tired for months, Lila. Nate’s had to deal with this alone.”
Nate flinched at the accusation but remained silent.
Lila’s eyes narrowed, cold and sharp. “Don’t you dare blame me for his choices.”
Camille’s smirk faltered for a moment, but she quickly recovered. “I’m not the one who promised forever and broke that promise.”
Nate’s voice finally broke through the tension, desperate and raw. “Enough! This isn’t helping anyone.”
Lila looked at him, pain and disappointment etched deep in her features. “I’m done pretending, Nate. Pretending that everything is okay when it’s not.”
Ava stepped forward, voice trembling but determined. “We want the truth, all of it.”
Caleb nodded, eyes fierce. “No more secrets.”
Lila took a shaky breath, feeling the weight of the moment settle over her. “Then let’s stop hiding.”
The room seemed to hold its breath, the fragile threads of their shattered family beginning to unravel in the harsh light of truth.
Nate’s shoulders slumped as the weight of their gazes bore down on him. His voice was low, strained. “I never meant to hurt you, Lila. I was lost... I thought I was protecting you all.”
Lila’s eyes flashed with bitter anger. “Protecting? By lying? By betraying everything we built?”
Camille stepped forward, voice sharp and unapologetic. “He made his choice a long time ago. I’m just the one he didn’t have the courage to walk away from.”
Ava’s tears spilled over. “How could you do this to Mom? To us?”
Caleb’s fists shook at his sides, barely able to contain his rage. “You ruined everything.”
Nate looked at his children, voice breaking. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Lila’s gaze hardened, pain transforming into resolve. “Sorry won’t fix this. Nothing will—except honesty.”
Camille scoffed, crossing her arms. “Honesty? You think he’d come clean if I didn’t push him?”
Nate closed his eyes briefly, the fight draining from him. “I don’t know what to do anymore.”
Lila took a deep breath, steadying herself. “Then start by telling us everything. No more secrets.”
The room grew unbearably silent—broken only by the soft sobs of Ava and the angry silence of Caleb.
For the first time, the fragile walls between them cracked wide open, exposing the raw wounds beneath.
Camille’s eyes glittered with cold triumph as she took a slow step toward Lila, voice dripping with venom. “You think you’re some kind of saint, Lila? Playing the sick, the victim? Meanwhile, Nate and I… we had something real. Something you couldn’t give him.”
Lila’s lips tightened, but she stood her ground, voice steady despite the fire inside her. “Real? You call this real? Destroying a family? Breaking a man?”
Camille laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “I didn’t break him. He came to me. You were gone long before this started.”
Ava’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. “How dare you speak about Mom like that?”
Caleb’s face was a storm of fury. “You don’t belong here.”
Camille didn’t flinch. “Oh, but I do. Nate chose me. Not you.”
Lila’s gaze sharpened, cold and cutting. “Nate is still my husband. And this,” she gestured to the chaos around them, “is your ruin, Camille.”
Camille’s smile was a razor. “Maybe. But I’m the one who’s alive. I’m the one he wants.”
Lila took a slow breath, fighting to keep her composure. “You want him. But you’ll never have him.”
The tension cracked like thunder.
Camille’s eyes narrowed. “Watch me.”
Lila’s voice was calm but unwavering, every word edged with quiet strength. “Camille, it’s time for you to leave. This is our home, and you are not welcome here.”
Camille’s smirk faltered, but she held her ground. “I’m not going anywhere. Nate and I—”
Lila cut her off, stepping closer with steely eyes. “No. You’re done here. Take whatever you want from him, but you will not take this family.”
Ava stood beside her mother, her voice fierce. “Get out. Now.”
Caleb echoed, voice low and threatening. “Before we make you.”
For a heartbeat, Camille hesitated, weighing her options. Then, with a harsh laugh, she threw a last glare at Lila. “This isn’t over.”
Without another word, she turned and stormed out, the front door slamming shut behind her.
The house fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the quiet sobs of Ava and the hollow stillness of Nate.
Lila took a shaky breath, steadying herself. “She won’t stop. But neither will we.”
