Chapter Five
Izzy
Three days in the Briarthorne, and Bren has been everywhere.
Not physically omnipresent — the manor is large enough that avoidance would be possible if either of us wanted it.
But his heat precedes him through the hallways like an advance guard.
The temperature in whatever room I'm occupying rises five minutes before he appears in the doorway, amber-eyed and antlered, watching me read or eat or study the maps of the Briarthorne I found in the library.
We've talked. Carefully, circling each other with words the way predators circle prey, except I refuse to be prey and he hasn't figured out what to do with that refusal.
He's told me about his court — the Autumn Throne, the harvest magic that sustains the Briarthorne's growing things.
I've told him about my research — the folklore, the standing stones, the academic papers that will never be published now because my primary source material is a real fae lord and no journal in the world would accept that citation.
He's magnetic. I won't pretend otherwise.
When Bren enters a room, the room reorganizes itself around him — literally, in the manor's case, but metaphorically in mine.
My attention swings toward him like a compass needle.
My skin warms. My pulse accelerates. And something lower, deeper, less academic, clenches with a want that has nothing to do with folklore.
Tonight he finds me in the library, and he isn't circling.
He closes the door. The lock engages with a sound like a branch snapping.
"I'm done being careful with you," he says.
I set down my book. "Were you being careful? I hadn't noticed."
He crosses the library in strides that make the floorboards smolder.
The sconces on the walls flare from amber to vivid orange.
His antlers are fully manifest, bone-white to blood-dark, spanning the width of the aisle between shelves.
He stops in front of my chair and looks down at me with eyes that have gone molten — the amber deepened to something liquid and volcanic.
"Every minute I spend near you, my magic gets worse." His voice scrapes low, roughened. "The manor has added three hearths to the east wing since you arrived. The forest canopy around the standing stone is on fire. Perpetually. My antlers haven't retracted in two days."
"That sounds like a you problem."
"It's an us problem." He braces his hands on the arms of my chair, caging me.
The heat from his palms sinks through the upholstery into my skin.
"The bond is forming. My magic is responding to your presence whether or not we've touched, and it is taking everything I have not to find out what happens when we do. "
I should push back. I should demand negotiation, terms, the careful academic framework I use to manage everything I can't control.
But his face is inches from mine and his breath smells like burning cedar and his heat has turned the space between us into something tropical, humid, and my body has already made its decision.
"Then stop holding back," I say.
His mouth hits mine, and the word "kiss" is inadequate.
It's a claiming — his lips hot, insistent, his tongue demanding entry that I give because withholding it would be a lie.
He tastes like smoke and autumn wine. His hands come off the chair arms and grip my waist, pulling me to my feet, and the full-body contact is a detonation.
His heat envelops me. Every point where his body touches mine — chest, hips, thighs — blazes with a warmth that sinks past skin into muscle, into bone.
I grab his shirt — or whatever the Briarthorne equivalent of a shirt is — and pull him closer. He makes a sound against my mouth, low and rough and approving, and his hands slide down my hips with a proprietary grip that should anger me and instead makes me grind against him.
He's hard. The evidence of it presses against my stomach through the fabric between us, thick and insistent, and when I shift to create friction he breaks the kiss long enough to growl a word in a language I don't recognize.
"English," I gasp.
"Mine." That word, I understand. His hands find the laces of my dress — the green one, the one the wardrobe offered three days ago — and pull.
The fabric parts down my front, and the air that hits my skin should be cool but isn't because the ambient temperature in this library is now Mediterranean. "You are mine, Izzy."
"I haven't agreed to that."
"Your body has." His mouth drops to my throat.
Not a kiss — a press of open lips and tongue against my pulse point, tasting, and his heat sears the sensitive skin.
I arch into it. My fingers find his hair, and above, his antlers — smooth at the base, textured where bone branches, and when I touch them his entire body goes rigid.
"Don't —" He groans. "The antlers are — it's direct to the —"
I grip one deliberately, and his hips jerk against mine with a force that nearly takes me off my feet.
"Noted," I say, and I am not above weaponizing this information.
He retaliates by getting my dress off entirely. It pools at my feet like a shed skin, and I'm standing in the Ashenmere library in nothing but underwear that the Briarthorne provided — lace, black, and apparently designed by a territory with very specific aesthetic preferences.
Bren steps back far enough to look. His amber eyes track from my throat to my chest to my waist and below, and everywhere his gaze touches, my skin flushes with heat that is partly his magic and partly my own undeniable, aggressive desire.
"The wardrobe chose well," he murmurs.
"Take me to the desk or the floor. I don't care which."
His control snaps with a sound that might be his magic and might be the bookshelf behind him catching fire.
He lifts me — hands under my thighs, effortless, his fae strength making my weight irrelevant — and carries me to the library desk, sweeping papers and books aside with one arm while setting me on the edge with the other.
The wood is warm under my bare thighs. His hands spread my knees apart.
He kneels.
The Lord of the Autumn Court, antlered and burning, kneels on the library floor between my thighs and presses his mouth to the lace between my legs.
The heat of his lips is extraordinary — not painful, not scorching, but a sustained warmth that penetrates the fabric and makes my cunt pulse with a rush of blood that I feel in my teeth.
His tongue traces the edge of the lace, following the crease of my thigh, and his breath against the wet fabric is a temperature I associate with bathwater. Perfect, unbearable, relentless.
"Bren." My hands are in his hair, on his antlers. I grip a tine and his groan vibrates against me and the shared frequency of that sound and his mouth and his heat makes me arch off the desk.
He pulls the lace aside rather than removing it — impatient, territorial — and his tongue finds me directly.
No preamble, no teasing. He licks a broad stripe from my entrance to my clit and seals his mouth around the swollen nerve bundle, and his heat is inside me now, conducted through his tongue, radiating outward until my entire pelvis is a furnace of sensation.
I grip both antlers. His hips thrust against nothing, his own arousal desperate for contact, and the image of this powerful fae lord undone between my legs, his magic manifesting in visible heat waves that make the air above us ripple — it feeds something in me that I've never let anyone see.
The part that wants to be the center. The axis around which gods orbit.
His tongue works me with devastating precision.
Fast circles on my clit, then slow, then a dip inside that makes me cry out because his tongue is hotter there, wetter, and the combination of internal heat and external cold — no, not cold, the absence of his heat on my clit when his mouth moves away — creates a contrast that drives me higher.
The library is sweltering. Actual flames lick along the edges of the bookshelves, contained by the manor's magic but present, visible, responding to his arousal. His antlers glow at the tips, blood-dark to ember-orange, and where I grip them, warmth pours down my arms into my chest.
He adds two fingers. They're thick, calloused, and the heat of them inside me is a temperature that should be dangerous but instead feels exactly calibrated — just past the edge of too-much, hovering in the space where intensity becomes transcendence.
He curves them forward, finds the rough patch of internal flesh that makes my vision white out, and strokes it while his tongue returns to my clit.
"I'm going to —" I don't finish the sentence.
My body finishes it for me. The orgasm breaks from the base of my spine upward, a cascading wave of heat that is mine and his, my muscles clenching around his fingers while his mouth holds steady, relentless, demanding every pulse.
Fire blooms along the nearest bookshelf.
The desk scorches under my hands. His antlers flare with light, and I feel the Briarthorne itself shudder — the manor walls groaning, the foundation shifting, as if the territory registered the release.
He doesn't stop. He reduces pressure but doesn't remove his mouth, working me through the aftershocks until my thighs are trembling and I'm pushing at his shoulders.
He rises, and his face is slick and flushed and triumphant, amber eyes blazing with a possessive satisfaction that should be insufferable.
"Stand up," I tell him. My voice is wrecked. I don't care.
He stands, and I slide off the desk and pull at his clothes. He helps — the leather and woven fabric come apart easier than human clothing, held by clasps that respond to his touch. He's naked in seconds, and I let myself look.
Golden skin everywhere, same late-afternoon-sunlight tone, stretched over muscle that is lean and hard and built for the kind of sustained physical effort that fae lords apparently require.
His cock stands thick against his stomach, flushed darker than the surrounding skin, and it radiates the same ambient heat as the rest of him.
I wrap my hand around it and his head drops back, antlers scraping the ceiling, and the sound he makes is guttural, animal, stripped of every courtly affectation.
"On the desk," I say. "Now."
He lifts me again. My back meets the scorched wood. He settles between my thighs, the head of his cock pressing against me, and pauses.
"This starts the bond," he says, and his voice is strained with the effort of not moving. "Physical contact at this level — my magic will mark you. You'll feel me afterward. A heat in your chest. Permanent unless the curse is broken."
"I know." I don't know, not fully, but I know that stopping now would be a bigger lie than any risk of magical bonding. "Do it."
He pushes inside, and we both go still.
The sensation is heat — inside me, around me, between us — a temperature that transforms nerve endings from receptors into live wires.
He's thick enough to stretch, and the stretch is a slow, gorgeous burn that makes me dig my nails into his shoulders.
His magic responds to the penetration: flames crawl up the desk legs, the sconces explode into pillars of fire, and his antlers catch full flame, burning like candelabras above his head.
"Fuck," he grits. His arms shake. "You feel — Izzy, you —"
"Move."
He moves. The first thrust sends heat cascading through my core, a wave that breaks against my spine and rebounds.
He sets a pace that is fast, hard, the desk creaking beneath us, and each drive of his hips buries him deep enough that I feel his heat in my stomach, in my lungs.
I lock my legs around his waist and take it, meet it, my hips rising to match his rhythm because passivity has never been my nature and it isn't going to start now.
The bond forms. I feel it happen — a click in my chest, like a lock engaging, and then a rush of warmth that isn't physical.
Bren's emotions pour through: possessiveness, desire, and beneath both, a loneliness so vast it has its own gravitational pull.
He's been alone with his fire for three centuries, and the bond shows me the shape of that solitude, the edges of it, the way it has calcified into control.
He feels me feeling him. His rhythm falters, and for one breath he looks at me with something unguarded and terrified and raw, and then he buries his face in my throat and fucks me harder, as if he can drive past the vulnerability with enough force.
The second orgasm builds differently — deeper, heavier, wound tight with his magic and the nascent bond.
When it hits, it isn't just physical. The heat in my chest detonates.
The library ignites — every sconce, every candle, every surface that can hold flame erupts in a blaze of amber and gold, and my body arches off the desk with a release that is muscular and magical and emotional simultaneously.
I feel him come inside me, a pulse of heat so intense it borders on incandescent, and his roar shakes the manor's foundations.
The flames die. The library settles. Bren's weight rests on me, heavy and heaving, his antlers slowly dimming from ember to bone.
And in the doorway, visible for one half-second before the shadows swallow him, Kael stands watching. His dark eyes meet mine across the ruined library. What I see in them isn't anger. It's hunger, and grief, and something that looks very much like inevitability.
Then the shadows take him, and he's gone.
The heat in my chest pulses. The bond with Bren glows like a coal.
And beside it, in the space where nothing exists yet, I feel a cold spot. Waiting.
