Chapter 58
Jon’s alarm clock went off earlier than normal. Levi rolled over and pretended to sleep while he watched Jon get ready for his day. He did this most mornings. The first morning Jon got up for work, Levi had sat up in the bed and talked to him, but Jon was worried about disturbing him, no matter how much he had tried to convince Jon that it was fine.
Levi waited until he heard the shower start and jumped from the bed. He threw on a pair of gym shorts and rushed to the kitchen. He started a pot of coffee and left it to brew, set the oven to preheat, and turned his attention to frying up a pan of sausage.
Jon appeared from the bedroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. “What are you doing up, babe? I hope I didn’t wake you.”
Levi smiled at him. “You didn’t. I’ve got some errands to run today, and figured I’d get up when you did to make you breakfast before work.”
Jon walked over to him and gave him a peck on the cheek while reaching around to grab a coffee cup. “I love you so damn much. I got up early today because I have a big meeting and I need to be ready to go earlier than normal, and was stressing what I was going to do for breakfast. You’re a lifesaver, babe.”
Levi smiled and turned to flip the sausage. “It’s not that big of a deal. Besides, I know you don’t always get a good breakfast, so I figured I’d give you a treat since I would be up anyway.”
Jon took a sip of his coffee. “Are you up to something?” He set his coffee on the counter, laughing. “Wait, don’t answer that. I don’t care. But I do have to get dressed. I’ll be right back.”
Levi flashed a smile. “OK, I’m about to scramble some eggs, so you better hurry.”
He watched as Jon turned and walked into the bedroom. “How did I get so damn lucky?”
“What was that, babe?” Jon’s voice shot from the bedroom.
“Nothing. Just talking to myself.”
Levi cracked four eggs into a bowl and started whisking. Jon returned, wearing gym shorts and a button down. Levi raised an eyebrow. “That’s a look, babe. Granted, you could make anything sexy.”
Jon blushed. “Thanks. I told you it was an important meeting. Gotta look nice…at least from the waist up.”
Levi dumped the eggs into a skillet. “I am not judging one bit. I know I don’t have to dress up to run the bar, but there are times I wish I could go as casual as you do sometimes.”
“It can be hard remembering when I have to be dressed or not, though. At least you don’t have to worry about that.”
They both laughed. Levi dumped the eggs onto a plate and took the sausage up onto a second plate. He placed four slices of bread onto a baking sheet and placed it in the oven. “Do you mind getting these plates? I’ll be right behind you with the toast.”
When the toast was ready, Levi carried it to the table. He stopped short. Jon had perfectly portioned their eggs and sausage onto the individual plates. He was sitting there grinning at Levi.
“It’s the least I could do to help.”
Levi sat down, and they began eating. Jon was savoring every bite. Levi knew his normal breakfast was, at best, a bowl of cereal.
“Levi, this was just what I needed this morning. An excellent breakfast with the love of my life.”
Levi blushed. “That’s sweet. So what’s this important meeting about? You didn’t mention it before.”
“It’s just like a regular customer meeting. We’re just going over some logistics with them. It’s important because there are some major bigwigs on the call, and they’re all on Eastern time. That’s why we’re starting earlier than normal.”
“That makes sense. You’ll do fine.”
Jon smiled. “Thanks. So what errands are you running that need you to get up so early? You didn’t say anything to me about that before, either.”
Levi paused mid bite. “There’s something I need to pick up and I can’t get it to the bar in time. I need to leave here no later than nine to be sure I get back in time to open the bar up tonight.”
Jon gave him a suspicious look. Levi hated lying to him, but he couldn’t ruin the surprise.
