Chapter 59

Jon could barely pay attention to his meetings. He was thankful they flew by. He had initially offered to take the day off so they could have an extra day together, but Levi said he had a few things he had to do for the bar, anyway. It worked out when Jon realized that there were important meetings on the morning before they were going to Galveston, but he was still sad. His time with Levi often felt too brief. He cherished every moment and leaped at every opportunity to get more time with him, and wished he was with him now. Instead, he took the rest of the day to get ready for the trip. He shut his work computer and headed to the bedroom to find his overnight bag, stripping the button down and tossing it in the hamper.

Jon hadn’t wanted to give Levi hints about his plans for this weekend, so he had tried to not make it seem like he was putting a lot of extra emphasis on this trip. Since Levi was gone, he could stress every detail of what he packed in privacy. Tossing the bag onto the bed, he made his way to the bathroom to grab his toiletry bag. Staring at himself in the mirror, he smiled. He couldn’t believe how lucky he was to have a man like Levi, and no matter how bad things were with his family, he was safe; and he was happy. He went through every detail of how he wanted his sunrise proposal to occur, visualizing each detail in his mind’s eye.

A sharp knock at the door ripped him from his fantasy.

“I’ll be there in just a minute!” Jon’s heart raced. He rushed to find a t-shirt and headed to answer the door. “James! What are you doing here? Come in.”

“Is Levi up yet? I sent him a text, but he hasn’t answered.”

“No. He left early this morning. Said he had some errands to run for the bar. He said he’d be there to open, though. I guess he’s driving.” Jon watched James raise an eyebrow.

“Right. Errands. For the bar. I forgot all about that.”

There was something in his voice that Jon didn’t trust, but he shrugged it off. He trusted Levi and suspected he might be up to something with this romantic weekend. A sly grin crossed Jon’s face. “So you really don’t know what he’s up to, do you? You wouldn’t have just showed up looking for him and stuck your foot in your mouth if you did.”

James stammered, attempting to respond.

Jon laughed. “Don’t worry about it. I won’t tell him about this if you promise not to tell him I’m not working and getting ready for the trip. I’m so excited I left work early.”

“Deal. So what are you up to then?”

“Just packing. I need to do something with all of this nervous energy, though. I was thinking I might need to run to the store here in a bit. Maybe see if I can get a haircut. I’m getting a little shaggy again. I want to look my best for Levi this weekend.” Jon winked, and James shook his head.

“Y’all are too much sometimes, ya know? I can’t do anything with either of you.”

“What? Don’t you feel the same way about Jeff?”

“I do, but I just can’t wrap my mind around how happy you make Levi. He’s happier than I have ever seen him. I’m glad he’s got you.”

James chuckled. “I appreciate that, man.”

James placed a hand on Jon’s shoulder and flashed a smile. “Well, I probably need to head out.”

James was heading toward the door.

“Hey, hold on a minute. Want to grab a coffee? I could get my haircut while I’m out, but I want to pick your brain about a few things.”

“Sounds like a plan. I’ll meet you at the coffee shop across from the bar. I’m sure we can get Cate to dish on her opinion of your sister. When we’re done, I’ll go in and start cleaning up. I bet Levi is going to be exhausted tonight.”
