Watching the cop car pull away with Mack inside and Nik being led out with his head bowed is the perfect start to my new life. When Nik is close enough to me he stops and calls for me.

“What dya want?” I sneer as I narrow my eyes at him.

Nik looks at the ground and then back at me, “For what’s worth, I’m sorry. I didn’t have a choice.”

I stalk over in his direction, snarling, “You had a fuckin’ choice, we all had fuckin’ choices. You chose wrong. So fuck you and stay the fuck outta my life. From that night on, we don’t know each other. You’re not my brother.”

Turning on my heel, I walk away as he yells after me. I ignore him and keep walking, I have too many good things happening right now to even remotely be concerned with his bullshit.

Checking the time, I find that I need to get a move on.

Running back to the truck, I grab my backpack and head into the house.

Hurrying to my room, I search for a few things I left behind when I moved before heading to the bathroom.

Turning on the water, I strip down while the water heats up.

Getting into the shower, I let the hot water run over my head, as the heat relaxes my tense muscles, I sigh in relief.

It was finally over, the last piece had fallen into place and I was free from Mack’s treacherous reign.

Standing in the shower, I let my emotions take over.

Feeling a tear fall from my eye, for the first time in years, I allowed myself to cry, letting the constant state of terror I had been in go.

I let it all out and felt lighter than I had in a long time when I got out.

Moving quickly, I dried off and got dressed.

Grabbing a duffle bag from my closet, I fill it with the last of the stuff I want to take with me. Taking one last look around the room, I know that I will never set foot in this house again. So many memories and none of them happy, but it is time to make new ones in my new place. With Kai.

Walking out of the room, bookbag in hand, duffle slung over my shoulder, I find Ollie in the living room. Dropping the bag by the front door I ask, “Can I borrow your truck? And do we have any burner phones?”

Tossing me the keys, Ollie points to a phone on the table, “It’s set up with GPS and Zak’s number, I don’t know Kai’s number though…soooo,” he says, with a shrug.

I grab the phone and shove it in my pocket. “Thanks. I know where he’s goin’ to school, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out where he is once I talk to Zak anyways. I’m sure he has his schedule.”

Ollie looks down at the ground and then back up at me, “You won’t be comin’ back here, will ya?” he asks with a sad smile.

Taking one last look around the rundown house, “Nett. We have a place in the city. I’m hopin’ to get a job workin’ with Andrei at the tattoo place. You should get out too, Ollie. I’ll have Grigory and Tomas bring you back your truck tonight.”

Shaking his head, he waves me off, “Keep it, I got Nik’s car. But Dax, where would I go? What would I do?” Ollie asks.

“Talk to Zak, see what he says, but find a new place to live. Sell this shithole and move. But you’ll still see me, Ols,” I tell him.

“I’ll think about it, now get outta here so you’re not late. Go get your man,” Ollie says with a sly grin.

I grab my bags from the floor and head out, thinking, ‘I have somewhere to be.’
