Coffee and Confessions
Coffee and Confessions
Hazel’s POV
Three weeks.
That was how long I had worked at Blackwood Corporation.
Long enough to learn Ethan Blackwood’s routine.
He arrived every morning at exactly 7:30 a.m.
His first meeting began at 8:00 a.m.
He drank black coffee.
No sugar.
No cream.
He read every report himself, even if someone had already summarized it.
He thanked people quietly.
He expected excellence.
And despite his reputation...
He never raised his voice.
Not once.
I was beginning to realize something.
People feared him because he demanded accountability.
Not because he was cruel.
There was a difference.
A very important difference.
----
“Morning, Hazel.”
Claire walked into my office carrying a folder.
“Morning.”
“You’re here early.”
I smiled.
“I learned from the best.”
She laughed.
“You’re starting to sound like him.”
I looked toward Ethan’s office through the glass wall.
His lights were already on.
Of course they were.
Claire followed my gaze.
“He hasn’t taken a proper vacation in four years.”
I frowned.
“Four years?”
She nodded.
“He works almost every day.”
“What about weekends?”
“Usually.”
I couldn’t imagine living like that.
“When does he rest?”
Claire’s smile faded.
“I don’t think he knows how.”
----
Ethan’s POV
At precisely eight-fifteen, Hazel entered my office carrying a tablet and a leather folder.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning, Mr. Blackwood.”
She placed my schedule on the desk.
“You have six meetings today.”
“I remember.”
“I know.”
The corners of her lips lifted slightly.
“I just wanted to remind you that lunch is actually included in your schedule.”
I looked up from the document I was reading.
“Lunch?”
She nodded.
“Between one and one-thirty.”
“I’ll probably skip it.”
“I assumed you’d say that.”
Before I could respond, she placed a small paper bag beside my coffee.
I looked at it.
“What’s this?”
“Breakfast.”
I stared at her.
“I didn’t ask for breakfast.”
“No.”
She smiled politely.
“But you also didn’t eat yesterday.”
I blinked.
“...Excuse me?”
She opened her tablet.
“You had eight meetings.”
“You drank four coffees.”
“You never left your office.”
Her voice remained completely professional.
“So I asked the cafeteria manager.”
She looked back at me.
“You skipped both breakfast and lunch.”
I had.
I simply hadn’t realized she’d noticed.
“I don’t require someone to monitor my eating habits.”
“I know.”
She didn’t sound offended.
“I was just concerned.”
Concern.
Not criticism.
Not interference.
Concern.
I looked down at the paper bag.
Inside was a simple turkey sandwich and fresh fruit.
Nothing extravagant.
Just... food.
“I’ll leave you to your meetings.”
She turned toward the door.
“Ms. Brooks.”
She looked back.
“Yes?”
“...Thank you.”
Her smile reached her eyes.
“You’re welcome.”
The door closed quietly behind her.
For a long moment, I looked at the breakfast she had left behind.
No one had reminded me to eat in years.
Not since...
I stopped the thought before it could go further.
Instead, I opened the paper bag.
The sandwich was still warm.
Without realizing it...
I smiled.
Again.

Hazel’s POV
By noon, I had almost memorized Ethan’s calendar for the next month.
He wasn’t exaggerating when he said he stayed busy.
There were hardly any empty spaces.
As I reviewed his afternoon appointments, Olivia stopped by my office.
“How are you surviving?”
I laughed.
“Coffee.”
“The universal language of executive assistants.”
She leaned against the doorway.
“So...”
She lowered her voice.
“How is he?”
I knew exactly who she meant.
“Demanding.”
Olivia nodded.
“Fair.”
Another nod.
“Quiet.”
“Very.”
“But...”
I smiled to myself.
“He’s kinder than people think.”
Olivia’s expression softened.
“I’ve worked with Ethan for eight years.”
She looked toward his office.
“Most people only see the walls he built.”
“And you?”
“I’ve seen the man protecting what’s behind them.”
Before I could ask what she meant, Ethan’s office door opened.
He stepped into the hallway.
“Ms. Brooks.”
I immediately stood.
“Yes, Mr. Blackwood?”
“I’ll be leaving for the Henderson meeting in fifteen minutes.”
“I’ve already prepared everything.”
He gave a single approving nod.
“I thought you might have.”
For some reason...
That simple sentence stayed with me long after we walked toward the elevator together.
Because for the first time...
It felt less like I was proving myself.
And more like he genuinely trusted me.
----
Hazel’s POV
The drive to Henderson Technologies took nearly forty minutes.
For most of the trip, Ethan worked quietly in the back seat, reviewing contracts on his tablet while I organized the notes for the meeting.
The silence between us wasn’t awkward anymore.
It had become... comfortable.
Outside, Manhattan rushed past in shades of steel and glass.
Inside the car, there was only the soft hum of the engine and the occasional tap of Ethan’s fingers against the screen.
Without looking up, he spoke.
“You’ve adapted quickly.”
I glanced at him in the rearview mirror.
“Thank you.”
“It usually takes new assistants months to memorize my schedule.”
I smiled.
“I like solving puzzles.”
That caught his attention.
He lowered the tablet slightly.
“My calendar is a puzzle?”
“The most complicated one I’ve ever seen.”
For the first time that morning, I saw the corner of his mouth lift.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“It was meant as one.”
----
The meeting lasted nearly three hours.
I sat quietly beside Ethan, taking notes while executives discussed investments, production forecasts, and future partnerships.
Watching Ethan negotiate was fascinating.
He never interrupted.
He never raised his voice.
He simply listened.
When he finally spoke, the room listened in return.
Leadership, I realized, wasn’t about being the loudest person in the room.
It was about making every word matter.
As the meeting ended, Henderson’s CEO walked toward us with a smile.
“Blackwood.”
“Ethan.”
They shook hands.
Then the older man looked at me.
“And who is this?”
Ethan answered before I had the chance.
“My executive assistant.”
There was something about the way he said my that made my heart skip unexpectedly.
“This is Hazel Brooks.”
The CEO smiled warmly.
“Pleasure to meet you.”
“You too, sir.”
As we left the building, Ethan spoke without slowing his pace.
“You handled yourself well.”
“I barely spoke.”
“You listened.”
He glanced at me.
“Most people underestimate the value of listening.”
----
Ethan’s POV
The rain started without warning.
By the time we reached the sidewalk, heavy drops were falling across the city.
I opened my umbrella.
Hazel searched through her bag.
Then sighed quietly.
“I forgot mine.”
Without thinking, I held my umbrella slightly toward her.
“We’re walking the same direction.”
She hesitated.
“I don’t want to inconvenience you.”
“It isn’t an inconvenience.”
For a second, she looked as though she wanted to argue.
Instead, she stepped beside me.
The umbrella was large.
Even so...
Our shoulders occasionally brushed as we walked.
Neither of us commented on it.
The scent of fresh rain filled the air.
Mixed with something softer.
Lavender.
Her perfume.
Subtle.
Not overwhelming.
I noticed it only because she was standing so close.
She looked up at the gray sky.
“I’ve always liked rainy days.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Really?”
She nodded.
“They make the city feel... quieter.”
I understood exactly what she meant.
“It’s easier to think.”
She smiled.
“I was going to say the same thing.”
For the first time, our conversation had nothing to do with work.
And surprisingly...
I didn’t mind.
----
Hazel’s POV
As we reached the car, Ethan held the umbrella over me until I was safely inside.
Only then did he walk around to his side.
A small gesture.
Probably nothing to him.
Yet it stayed with me for the rest of the afternoon.
People were right about one thing.
He wasn’t expressive.
He didn’t say much.
But he noticed everything.
And somehow...
He always acted before anyone had to ask.
----
Back at Blackwood Corporation, I organized the meeting notes while Ethan returned to his office.
About an hour later, there was a soft knock on my open door.
I looked up.
Ethan stood there holding two paper cups.
I blinked in surprise.
“Mr. Blackwood?”
“I was getting coffee.”
He held one cup toward me.
“I remembered you usually drink a caramel latte around this time.”
For a second, I simply stared.
He...
Remembered?
“I hope I guessed correctly.”
A smile spread across my face.
“You did.”
I accepted the cup carefully.
“Thank you.”
He gave a small nod.
“Consider it repayment.”
“For what?”
“The breakfast.”
Before I could answer, he turned toward his office.
Then paused.
Without looking back, he said quietly,
“And Hazel...”
It was the first time he had used my first name.
No “Ms. Brooks.”
No formal distance.
Just...
Hazel.
“Yes?”
“Good work today.”
He disappeared into his office before I could respond.
I looked down at the warm coffee in my hands.
My cheeks felt warmer than the cup.
I smiled to myself.
Maybe it was only coffee.
Maybe it was only a name.
But somehow...
It felt like the first crack in the invisible wall Ethan Blackwood had built around himself.
