The Charity Gala
The Charity Gala
Hazel’s POV
Monday morning began with a surprise.
I had barely finished organizing Ethan’s schedule when Claire appeared at my desk with a navy-blue envelope in her hands.
“There you are.”
She placed it in front of me with a knowing smile.
“What’s this?”
“Open it.”
Curious, I slid my finger beneath the seal.
Inside was an elegant invitation embossed in silver.
The Blackwood Foundation Annual Charity Gala
Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
Attendance Required.
I read it twice before looking up.
“I don’t understand.”
Claire leaned against my desk.
“The Foundation hosts a charity gala every year.”
“I know that part.”
“So?”
“So...”
I hesitated.
“Why am I invited?”
She laughed softly.
“Because you’re Mr. Blackwood’s executive assistant.”
“I thought only executives attended.”
“They do.”
“And now you will.”
My stomach tightened.
“I’ve never been to anything like this.”
Claire smiled sympathetically.
“I hadn’t either before my first year.”
“What if I embarrass myself?”
“You won’t.”
She crossed her arms.
“Besides...”
She lowered her voice dramatically.
“If anyone gives you trouble, Olivia and I will rescue you.”
I laughed.
“That’s oddly comforting.”
----
Around noon, Ethan called me into his office.
“You wanted to see me?”
He looked up from his laptop.
“Close the door, please.”
I did.
He motioned toward the chair opposite his desk.
“Sit.”
I frowned slightly.
His tone wasn’t cold.
Just... unusually formal.
Once I was seated, he folded his hands.
“I assume you’ve received the invitation.”
“Yes.”
“You’ll be attending with me.”
I blinked.
“...With you?”
He nodded.
“As part of your responsibilities.”
“Oh.”
I silently scolded myself for reading too much into his words.
Of course it was work.
Nothing more.
“I’ve never attended a gala.”
“I know.”
“I don’t really know what to expect.”
He considered my words.
“There will be investors.”
“Board members.”
“Charity partners.”
“The press.”
My eyes widened slightly.
“The press?”
“They’ll photograph everyone who arrives.”
I swallowed.
“I’m beginning to regret accepting this job.”
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
“You’ll be fine.”
“You sound very confident.”
“I am.”
His answer came without hesitation.
“You’ve handled everything I’ve asked of you.”
“This won’t be any different.”
I smiled despite my nerves.
“You always make difficult things sound easy.”
“They rarely are.”
He stood and walked toward the window overlooking Manhattan.
“I simply don’t believe fear should make our decisions.”
His reflection appeared faintly in the glass.
“That’s something the Army taught me.”
I watched him for a moment.
He rarely spoke about his military years.
Whenever he did...
There was a different look in his eyes.
A mixture of pride and sorrow.
“I’ll do my best,” I said quietly.
He turned toward me.
“I know you will.”
----
Ethan’s POV
She was nervous.
I could tell from the way she kept adjusting the notebook in her hands.
Most people assumed confidence meant the absence of fear.
Hazel reminded me of the young soldiers I’d once trained.
They were afraid.
Every single one of them.
The difference was...
They refused to let fear stop them.
She reminded me of that.
And perhaps...
That was why I trusted her more with each passing day.
----
Friday evening arrived sooner than expected.
The executive floor had finally emptied.
I stepped out of my office to find Hazel still working.
Again.
She didn’t notice me immediately.
She was reading through the gala guest list, quietly practicing names under her breath.
“Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore...”
She paused.
“Whit-more.”
A small smile touched my lips.
She was rehearsing so she wouldn’t mispronounce anyone’s name.
Attention to detail.
Always.
She looked up and immediately smiled.
“Oh.”
“I didn’t hear you.”
“I noticed.”
She quickly closed the folder.
“I was just making sure I wouldn’t embarrass you tomorrow.”
I walked closer.
“Hazel.”
She looked at me.
“You’ve never embarrassed me.”
The words slipped out before I had time to reconsider them.
Her green eyes widened ever so slightly.
For a heartbeat, neither of us spoke.
Then she smiled.
A genuine smile.
The one with the dimples.
“Thank you.”
For some reason...
Those two words stayed with me long after I returned to my office.
And for the first time in years...
I found myself looking forward to something that wasn’t another business meeting.
Saturday evening.
The charity gala.
I had attended dozens over the years.
But somehow...
This one felt different before it had even begun.
----
Hazel’s POV
Saturday arrived far too quickly.
For nearly an hour, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, staring at three dresses spread across my bed.
A navy gown.
A silver one.
And an emerald-green dress I had bought during my final year at university, convinced I’d wear it to some important business event.
I never had.
Until now.
I carefully slipped into the emerald gown.
It flowed to the floor in soft satin, elegant without being extravagant.
The color made my green eyes appear brighter, while my copper-red hair fell in loose waves over one shoulder.
I fastened a pair of small pearl earrings and took a slow breath.
“It’s just work.”
I repeated the words to myself.
“Just work.”
Even if my heart refused to believe it.
----
At exactly seven o’clock, a sleek black sedan stopped outside my apartment building.
The driver stepped out first.
“Good evening, Ms. Brooks.”
“Good evening.”
He opened the rear door.
As I climbed inside, I froze.
Ethan was already there.
He looked up from his phone.
For a brief moment...
Neither of us spoke.
He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, paired with a crisp white shirt and a dark tie.
Without the usual business suit, he somehow looked even taller.
More relaxed.
Still composed.
But undeniably handsome.
His brown eyes met mine.
And for the first time since I’d met him...
He seemed momentarily speechless.
“You look...”
He stopped, as though searching for the right word.
I felt warmth creep into my cheeks.
“...beautiful.”
The compliment was quiet.
Sincere.
Without exaggeration.
Without flirtation.
Simply honest.
My heart skipped.
“Thank you.”
I smiled shyly.
“You look very handsome yourself.”
One corner of his mouth lifted.
“I appreciate that.”
The car began moving through the glowing streets of Manhattan.
For a few minutes, we simply watched the city lights pass by.
Then Ethan broke the silence.
“Are you still nervous?”
“A little.”
He nodded.
“So am I.”
I turned toward him in surprise.
“You?”
He gave a faint smile.
“I speak in front of thousands of investors without hesitation.”
He looked out the window.
“But charity galas have always been different.”
“Why?”
“They remind me how many people are counting on us.”
His answer lingered in the quiet space between us.
The gala wasn’t about prestige.
It wasn’t about photographs.
To him...
It was about responsibility.
Somehow...
That made me admire him even more.
----
The ballroom was breathtaking.
Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light across polished marble floors.
A string quartet played softly near the grand staircase.
Waiters moved gracefully through the crowd carrying silver trays filled with sparkling drinks.
Everywhere I looked, people wore elegant gowns and tailored tuxedos.
My nervousness returned immediately.
Ethan noticed before I said a word.
He stepped slightly closer.
“So many people,” I whispered.
“Yes.”
“I suddenly feel underdressed.”
His expression softened.
“Hazel.”
I looked at him.
“Look around.”
I did.
“What do you see?”
“Successful people.”
He shook his head.
“I see people.”
I blinked.
“Some are wealthy.”
“Some are powerful.”
“They’re still just people.”
A small smile appeared on my face.
Somehow...
That simple reminder eased my anxiety.
“Ready?”
I nodded.
“I’m ready.”
----
As they entered the ballroom together, flashes from cameras briefly lit the entrance.
Reporters called out greetings.
“Mr. Blackwood!”
“Ethan!”
“This way!”
He acknowledged them with a polite nod but never slowed his pace.
Without drawing attention to it, he subtly matched his stride to Hazel’s so she wouldn’t feel rushed.
It was such a small gesture that almost no one noticed.
Hazel did.
Inside, guests approached one after another.
“Ethan!”
A gray-haired gentleman shook his hand enthusiastically.
“It’s been too long.”
“It has.”
The man’s wife turned to Hazel.
“And who is this lovely young woman?”
Before Hazel could answer, Ethan spoke calmly.
“This is Hazel Brooks.”
“My executive assistant.”
The older woman smiled warmly.
“It’s lovely to meet you.”
“You as well.”
Throughout the evening, Ethan introduced Hazel to board members, donors, and business partners.
Each introduction was respectful.
Never rushed.
Never dismissive.
He never left her standing alone in a conversation.
He always made sure she felt included.
With every passing minute, Hazel’s confidence grew.
And though neither of them said it aloud...
They were beginning to discover that working side by side came surprisingly naturally.
As the orchestra began the first dance of the evening, Hazel watched couples step onto the ballroom floor.
She smiled softly to herself.
It was beautiful.
She had no idea that before the night was over, this gala would give her and Ethan a memory neither of them would ever forget.
