The Promise
The Promise
Ethan’s POV
Winter arrived with the first snowfall.
From the office windows, Manhattan looked almost peaceful beneath a blanket of white.
Hazel stood beside the glass, watching snowflakes drift between the skyscrapers.
“It’s beautiful,” she said quietly.
“It is.”
She turned to me with the same smile that had brightened countless mornings.
“What?”
“You always smile like that when it snows.”
“I do?”
“You’ve done it every time.”
She laughed.
“I never noticed.”
“I did.”
She shook her head with an amused smile.
“You notice everything.”
“Only the things that matter.”
For a brief moment, she simply looked at me.
Then the meeting room door opened, and everyone returned to work.
But the conversation stayed with me for the rest of the day.
----
Hazel’s POV
That evening, we walked home through Central Park.
Fresh snow crunched softly beneath our boots.
The park lights cast a warm glow across the paths.
I slipped my hand into Ethan’s gloved hand.
“I’ve never seen New York like this.”
“It’s my favorite season.”
“I thought you’d say autumn.”
He smiled.
“I did.”
“So why winter?”
“Because winter reminds people to slow down.”
I looked up at him.
“And because you always seem happiest when it snows.”
I laughed.
“So your favorite season is actually... me?”
He smiled.
“I suppose it is.”
My cheeks warmed despite the cold air.
“My handsome gentleman...”
“Hm?”
“You still know exactly what to say.”
“I only tell the truth.”
----
Ethan’s POV
A week later, I found myself standing in front of a small jewelry shop.
Not because I had planned to.
Because my feet had carried me there before I realized it.
The owner greeted me with a friendly smile.
“Looking for something special?”
“Yes.”
“For someone very special.”
He showed me dozens of rings.
Some were elaborate.
Some dazzling.
None of them felt right.
Then he placed a simple platinum ring on the velvet tray.
Its center diamond wasn’t the largest in the display.
But it caught the light with quiet elegance.
It reminded me of Hazel.
Graceful.
Timeless.
Beautiful without trying to be.
“I’ll take this one.”
----
Hazel’s POV
A few days later, Claire invited me out for coffee.
She stirred her drink before smiling across the table.
“You look happy.”
“I am.”
“I’ve never seen Ethan this happy either.”
I laughed.
“He still works too much.”
“True.”
“But now he actually leaves the office on time.”
“Sometimes.”
Claire grinned.
“I’ll accept ‘sometimes.’”
She became thoughtful.
“You know...”
“What?”
“I watched the two of you grow from colleagues into partners in life.”
“It happened so naturally.”
I smiled into my coffee.
“It really did.”
“I never expected any of this.”
“Neither did he.”
Claire reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
“Whatever happens next...”
“I’m very happy for both of you.”
I smiled, completely unaware that Ethan had already begun planning the next chapter of our lives.
----
That Friday evening, Ethan returned home carrying a small paper bag from the bakery Hazel loved.
“You remembered.”
“I always do.”
They prepared dinner together, laughing over whose turn it was to wash the dishes.
Later, they settled onto the sofa with mugs of hot chocolate as snow fell beyond the balcony windows.
Hazel rested her head on Ethan’s shoulder.
“This is my favorite place.”
He looked around the apartment.
“Our home?”
She smiled and gently squeezed his hand.
“No.”
She looked up into his brown eyes.
“Wherever you’re with me.”
Ethan kissed her forehead softly.
Without her noticing, his thoughts drifted to the small velvet box hidden safely in his desk drawer.
He smiled to himself.
Very soon, if everything went as planned, this apartment wouldn’t just be the home they shared.
It would be the place where they began the next chapter of their lives together.
----
Hazel’s POV
The week before Christmas felt like a dream.
The city was covered in decorations.
Golden lights wrapped around trees.
Store windows displayed winter scenes.
Music filled the streets.
But somehow, my favorite place was still our apartment.
Not because it was the biggest.
Not because of the view.
Because it was ours.
On Friday evening, Ethan told me he had a surprise planned.
I looked at him suspiciously while putting on my coat.
“You know that saying usually means I’m either going somewhere wonderful or somewhere mysterious.”
He smiled.
“Can it be both?”
I laughed.
“That sounds suspicious.”
“You trust me?”
I looked at him.
“Of course I do.”
His expression softened.
“Then come with me.”
----
Ethan’s POV
I had planned every detail.
Not because I wanted something perfect.
Because I wanted something meaningful.
Hazel never cared about grand gestures.
She noticed the small things.
The effort.
The thought behind them.
That was why I brought her to the botanical garden.
The same place where everything had begun to change between us.
The pathways were decorated with winter lights.
The trees sparkled beneath the evening sky.
Hazel looked around in amazement.
“It’s beautiful.”
“I thought you’d like it.”
She smiled.
“You always remember.”
“I try.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You do more than try.”
Those words meant more than she knew.
----
Hazel’s POV
We walked through the garden slowly.
Every corner seemed to hold a memory.
The place where we had talked for hours.
The path where we had first admitted our feelings.
The quiet pond where everything had started to feel different.
Ethan stopped near a small bridge overlooking the water.
“Hazel.”
Something in his voice made me turn toward him.
He looked nervous.
Not the kind of nervousness I expected from Ethan Blackwood.
The man who could negotiate million-dollar deals without hesitation.
But here...
With me...
He seemed almost unsure.
“What is it?”
He took a breath.
“When I first met you, I thought you were simply someone who would make my work easier.”
I smiled softly.
“That sounds like you.”
He laughed quietly.
“It does.”
“But I was wrong.”
He looked at me.
“You didn’t just help my work.”
“You changed my life.”
My heart warmed.
“Ethan...”
“I spent years believing that success meant standing alone.”
He paused.
“Then you showed me that life is better when you have someone beside you.”
The winter lights reflected in his eyes.
“You became my home.”
----
He reached into his coat pocket.
Hazel’s eyes widened as he knelt.
The world seemed to become quiet around them.
“Ethan...”
“I don’t have a perfect speech.”
She smiled through the surprise.
“That’s okay.”
“I only have the truth.”
He looked up at her.
“I love you.”
A gentle silence followed.
“I want to spend my life creating memories with you.”
“I want ordinary mornings.”
“Quiet evenings.”
“Laughter over things that don’t matter.”
“And every difficult day that comes after.”
He opened the small box.
“Will you marry me, Hazel?”
For a moment, she could only smile.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.”
Her voice was filled with happiness.
“Yes, Ethan.”
----
Ethan’s POV
The relief I felt was impossible to describe.
Not because I had doubted her answer.
Because hearing it still felt like the greatest gift I had ever received.
Hazel laughed softly as she looked at the ring.
“It’s beautiful.”
“I chose it because it reminded me of you.”
She looked at him curiously.
“How?”
“Elegant.”
“Simple.”
“But impossible to overlook.”
Her cheeks warmed.
“You always know what to say.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I only say what I mean.”
----
Hazel’s POV
On the way home, I kept looking at my ring.
Not because of the diamond.
Because of what it represented.
A promise.
A future.
A life they had chosen together.
When they arrived home, they stood by the balcony watching the snow fall over the city.
“We’re really doing this.”
Ethan smiled.
“We are.”
She leaned against him.
“I never imagined my life would look like this.”
“Neither did I.”
“But I’m glad it does.”
He gently held her hand.
“So am I.”
Outside, New York continued moving.
Cars passed.
People hurried through the streets.
The world continued exactly as it always had.
But inside their apartment, a new chapter had begun.
Not because everything was perfect.
Because they had found someone they wanted beside them through every imperfect moment ahead.
