Chapter 34
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
Sophie
After dropping off Lexi at home I decided to go see Kendall. I needed her to tell me how ridiculous I was being and that I needed to just get over it. She would, I know she would.
It’s not even the fact that I’m jealous, okay maybe I am a little.
But it’s more the knowing he touched them and me having to sit in a chair while they do my hair and stuff.
I can’t even talk about my boyfriend, like all us girls do.
Because in the back of my mind I know me saying Finn’s name will just trigger memories for them.
I don’t want them to remember. Damn it, fine I am jealous. It is ridiculous!
Pulling up in front of the shop I see the tow truck is gone. Climbing out I walk inside hoping that Kendall isn’t the one out driving it. One of the guys, Leo I think, pokes his head out from beneath the hood of a truck and smiles.
“She’s out on a pickup. Shouldn’t be too much longer if you want to stick around and wait.
” He flashes me a grin and before now I would have swooned a little.
Leo is a good-looking guy, a bad boy type.
Rugged with longer blond hair he pulls back when he is working.
He has blue eyes, almost ocean blue, and dimples.
But he is a player, and yes he and Kendall have had themselves a few rounds where she has shared details.
Those details were hot, he is a wild one as she put it.
My cheeks feel flush but not because he’s somehow affected me. Nope, because I remember that Kendall shares how they went a round against the office door late at night after working on a car together. That door opens and her dad steps out.
“Hey, girl,” he says with smile. “Kendall will be back soon, she had a roadside pickup a few miles away.”
“Okay, I’ll stick around.” I step outside and sit down on the bench out front. Pulling out my phone I start thumbing through the messages when I hear the sounds of an approaching truck.
Lifting my head, immediately my mouth falls open in shock.
I jump up just as she pulls in and hits the brakes.
She offers me a wave and a smile, before jumping down and brushing off her hands.
“Oh my God! Kendall you didn’t.” I cover my mouth and literally bounce up and down on the balls of my feet.
Fear and anxiety sweep over me from head to toe. “No Kendall, no no no!”
“What in the hell are you freaking out about?” She wrinkles her forehead at me.
I point to the car currently strapped in on the flatbed of her tow truck. I open my mouth, then close it again and point harder.
“Are you having a seizure? I’m starting to worry about you.”
“Stop it, you crazy, insane, out of your mind, woman!” I literally jump up and down, thinking at any point the cops are going to come screaming into the parking lot and slap handcuffs on one of my very best friends.
“Why is Ryan’s car on your truck?” I gasp, and look left and right still waiting for the calvary to come speeding in.
“Because it stopped running while tiny dick was driving home from work.” She shrugs. “I was the on rotation during the call.”
I place my hands on my hips. “And why did it stop running in the first place?”
She shrugs and I don’t believe her. But if Kendall is anything, she is calm. She is always calm. She has the most amazing poker face, she never falters.
“Kendall.” I take a step closer and lock my eyes with hers. “Did you do something to make Ryan’s car stop running?”
“I didn’t.” Again she shrugs and I know she knows something.
“Did you have someone do something to his car?” I ask, still digging for the answers I know she has.
“No.” She smiles as if remembering something. “But can you imagine his face when I was the one that showed up to pick up his car. It was amazing, Sophie. Made my fucking day for sure!” She is almost giddy with joy.
“Kendall,” I try to interrupt her celebration, but she continues to bask in the glory.
“It was like he swallowed a bug, sucked on a lemon, and got a prostate exam all at the same time.” She laughs.
“There were so many things going on with his face and body at the same time, it was incredible to witness. Almost like my crazy ass neighbor on one of her midnight trips around the block in her sheer pajamas. Something I’ll never be able to wipe from my mind.
Only this made me happy, the neighbor thing makes me nauseous. ”
“Kendall,” I say again and she smiles, finally looking over at me.
“What?”
“Did you do something to Ryan’s car?”
“Uh no, not me,” she says with a straight face. “But apparently he’s currently screwing around with two different women at the office and they found out they weren’t his one and only. So they decided to team up and create some havoc.”
I stare at her, seeing the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on her face.
“Sugar in the gas tank, a potato in the tailpipe. Oh and they carved ‘I love dick’ in the roof of his car.” She giggles, yes I said giggles. So unlike her to react but like I say she is giddy with joy.
Crossing her arms over her chest she grins, like she is the one that destroyed Ryan’s beloved sports car.
“I asked him if I could get their numbers because I wanted to take them both out for a drink. Those ladies are my kind of ladies.” She laughs. “He didn’t like my joke though and when I offered him a ride and he started to walk to my truck I stood there laughing at him.”
“You gave him a ride?”
“No.” She wrinkles up her forehead like I’m the one acting insane. “I climbed inside, hit the auto lock on the doors, flipped him off, and drove away with his car on my truck. Blasted the music too and had a little celebration on the way.”
“Are you serious?”
“You know I am,” she adds with a little wave before walking inside the shop.
“Have I told you yet today how much I love you?” I yell and she spins around walking backward.
“Oh babe, you don’t need to tell me daily, I know I’m your favorite.” She holds her hands out to her side like she is the queen. And right now, in this moment she is my goddess!
Right now, I can’t even argue with her. Because today, she most definitely is my favorite person on the planet.
Suddenly the irrigation I felt is depleted and I can’t even remember what I was irritated about to being with.
“Remember we have pedis on Saturday,” Kendall hollers out and it all comes rushing back. “This will be the perfect conversation topic too.”
Chapter Thirty Six
Finn
The bell above the door chimes and I peek around the shelf just as Sophie steps inside. Setting the box down I stand up and step out into the aisle.
“Hey, Sophie,” Maggie says then she notices me. Glancing between the two of us I think she gets that we need a minute and excuses herself.
“You finally decide to talk to me again?” I ask, holding back my smile.
“I’m not mad,” she says and I raise a brow in question. “I’m not,” she says and I can imagine her stomping her feet like she has so many times before. “I can’t talk about you.”
“What?”
“When we go to salon it’s what we do. It’s almost like a therapy session, or a happy time when we brag about what’s going on in our lives. We share things about our boyfriends and now I can’t do that.”
“Why?”
“Because at the mention of your name all I am going to be worried about is them reliving those times. Or them laughing at me thinking we had him first. It’s gross and disturbing and frankly it pisses me off when I know I shouldn’t be pissed.
Which only makes everything so much worse and I feel like a fool.
This is completely adolescent, I know this, but it doesn’t make it stop. ”
Holding back my laughter I move closer and fist my hands to keep from reaching out to her.
“Without sharing too much detail I will say, that what happened with them, compared to us it’s not even in the same ballpark.”
“Stop,” she says, holding up her hand and shivering like she’s just imagined something awful. “I don’t want to picture what took place with you three. Ick, not, I can’t go there. They are sisters Finn, eww.”
“Well it wasn’t all at the same time, Sophie.” She stares at me with her nose flared. “What?”
“I know it wasn’t all at the same time, but thanks for the image you’ve just managed to create.”
“Babe, what am I supposed to do here?”
“You are supposed to be a virgin!” She literally stomps her foot and this time I laugh which she glares at me for.
“Hey.” I reach out and this time I don’t let her pull away from me.
“I was sixteen, seventeen at most. I was a horny teenage boy that didn’t take anything seriously.
Those times, have nothing on me now. They got the nervous boy that didn’t know what he was doing.
It was sloppy and inexperienced and carries nothing memorable. But you, us.”
“If you say something cheesy right now I might kick you.”
“Do you think I like to imagine what took place with you and any man before me?” I ask her and she wrinkles her nose up.
“No, but those men aren’t changing the oil in your car.”
“I change my own oil,” I do my best to make light of this.
“Of course you do.” She rolls her eyes. “So what you are saying is I should cut my own hair?”
“No, what I am saying is that none of this even matters. Neither one of them is going to carry on about something that happened when we were kids. I promise you, neither time was memorable. They are both married.”
“Last time I was in there, Delaney carried on about when she was eighteen and had her first three-way with a couple she’d met only a week before. I am pretty sure she’d be the first one to mention she screwed my boyfriend in high school.”
“Delaney is my cousin,” Maggie announces as she walks back in at the worst time. Sophie bows her head, placing her hand to her forehead. “She is ridiculous and has a very loud mouth, but I can’t believe you slept with her.” She wrinkles up her nose at me and narrows my eyes at her.
“Not helping,” I tell her and feel Soph push on my chest.
“This day is so out of whack I need to just go home and go to bed.” She stands tall. “First you and Bennett and then Kendall and Ryan’s car.”
“What happened with that dickbag’s car?”
She doesn’t answer me, only waves her hand in dismissal as she turns and starts walking toward the door.
“Sophie, what happened with Ryan’s car?” I holler out but instead of her answering me she walks outside and the door shuts behind her.
I pull my phone from my back pocket and find Kendall’s number in my contacts. She picks up on the third ring.
“Wanna help me vandalize pencil dick’s BMW?”
“Why do you have his car?”
“Sophie didn’t tell you the story?”
“She’s a little upset with me right now.” Kendall grows silent. “It’s not really anything I did, well it was when I was sixteen, and Bennett has a big ass mouth.”
“Wait are we talking about the tow sisters thing?”
“She told you?”
“No, Sutton did after she spent more than an hour on the phone with Lexi after she locked Bennett out of the house.”
“Shit,” I mumble.
“No need to worry, he got it, and apparently Sutton heard more than she bargained for. Bennett went on and on about his skills and then he showed Lexi. They are all better now.”
“Well, I’m still in the doghouse.”
“Do you not have any skills, Finn?”
“I have skills,” I assure her and she laughs.
“Well then you need to show up and show her.” This woman, she is crazy.
“Okay enough of this, back to the car. How do you have it?”
“Let me share my glory.” She rolls right in to the story and I stand there with a smile on my face.
“I feel like destroying it a little more. Putting a can of tuna somewhere up in the dash so every time he turns on the air or the heat it blows through the vents. And that shit is gonna smell even when he doesn’t.
But Dad says I can’t touch it. He doesn’t play well, it’s a battle he and I have been having all morning. ”
“You are crazy,” I tell her.
“You have no idea Finn, no idea. But if you want to head this way you’ll see just how crazy I can be. Dad is leaving in fifteen and I have so many fun ideas.”
I hang up feeling so much better than when I called. But instead of going to Montgomery, I leave Maggie in charge and I head to Sophie’s instead.
