The palace was silent when Yue Lian and Zheng Yu returned, slipping through the service entrance like mischievous children with a secret.

Lanterns glimmered in the hallways, casting long shadows on the stone.

Yue Lian felt uplifted by the night's adventure, the taste of dumplings still on her lips, the memory of the old woman's gratitude warming her heart.

She bid Zheng Yu goodnight outside her chamber and turned to enter, only to stop short. Cang Yan stood in the shadows beside her door, arms folded across his chest, every line of his body radiating command.

"Where have you been?" His voice was low, not angry, but edged with an authority she could not ignore.

She straightened, chin raised. "I didn't realize I was required to account for every moment of my day. Or am I still your prisoner, Master Cang Yan?" Her sarcasm was thinly veiled, a flash of anger surfacing at last for all the things left unsaid between them.

His expression barely shifted, but his eyes narrowed. "Answer me."

She crossed her arms, matching his stance. "If you must know, I went to the village market."

He studied her, searching her face. "Alone?"

Yue Lian hesitated, heart thumping for Zheng Yu's sake. "Yes. Alone."

He let the silence stretch, disappointment flickering in his eyes. "You could have asked me to go with you."

A bitter laugh escaped her. "I didn't think you'd enjoy the smells and the looks I got there. The market is not exactly a place for a ruler in silk robes."

His jaw tightened. "Don't you think I know where my people live? I built those villages. I'm not afraid or disgusted to walk the same roads as they do."

She looked away, voice sharp. "Yet you stay hidden in your big castle, surrounded by hundreds of servants."

He stiffened, as if she'd struck him. "I didn't choose this fate, Yue Lian."

She shrugged, suddenly cold. "None of us did, it seems."

For a moment, she barely recognized herself, her words cut deeper than she intended, and a wave of regret followed like a shadow.

But before she could say more, Cang Yan swayed, his face contorting in pain. He staggered, falling to his knees, one hand clutching his chest. A thin sheen of sweat broke out across his brow, and his breath came in ragged gasps.

"Cang Yan!" she cried, dropping to his side. She reached for him, her anger forgotten. "What's wrong?"

His body began to tremble, blue fire flickering beneath his skin. The air around him shimmered with heat and magic, the power barely restrained. He tried to push her away, but his strength faltered. "Don't... touch me..."

But she couldn't bear to leave him. She grasped his shoulders, pleading. "Tell me what to do!"

He dropped to the floor, the last of his control slipping away. His eyes, usually so cold and sharp, were wild with pain and something desperate. For a heartbeat, they were face to face, their breath mingling, her fear and his agony tangled together.

Then, in a rush of instinct and need, he pulled her closer and pressed his lips to hers.

The world exploded.

Power burst between them, his heavenly fire, wild and blue, colliding with the cool green light that sprang from her heart.

Their magic tangled, mending and clashing, blue and green flames spiraling around them, flooding the corridor with an unearthly glow.

Pain and relief warred in his body, the fire inside him soothed and stoked at once by her touch.

Yue Lian felt herself swept away by the force of it, her own spirit shuddering, her hidden power surging to meet his. For a moment, they were lost together in a storm of light, the fires fighting and then blending, neither one winning, neither one backing down.

He broke the kiss first, gasping for breath. The burning in his chest had faded, replaced by a bone-deep exhaustion. Yue Lian stared at him, wide-eyed, her lips tingling, her body alight with magic.

They lay there, tangled on the stone floor, the last wisps of green and blue fire fading into the night. Neither spoke. Neither dared move.

For the first time, Cang Yan looked at her not as a ruler, not as a weapon, but as the only person who had ever truly touched him, body and soul.

And for the first time, Yue Lian wondered if this was what it meant to be seen, to belong, to heal and be healed in return.

Outside, the moon crept higher, bearing silent witness to the moment when two lonely souls, for an instant, burned and mended as one.
