The moonlight slanted through the high windows, pooling in silvery puddles on the stone floor as the last echoes of green and blue fire faded from the hall.

Yue Lian found herself staring at Cang Yan, chest heaving, her lips tingling from the force of his kiss and the magic that had torn through her.

For a long, suspended moment, neither of them moved.

The silence was not comfortable. It was brittle and electric, full of things neither dared say. Cang Yan's expression was unreadable, eyes dark and fevered, jaw clenched as if holding back words or agony or both.

Yue Lian was the first to look away. She pressed her palm to her lips, still feeling the aftershocks of their power colliding, mending, and mingling.

What had just happened? She remembered the heat, the rush of energy, the pain in his eyes, and the desperate way he had pulled her close, as if she were the only anchor left in his world.

She forced herself to her knees, steadying her shaking limbs. "Are you... Are you all right?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Cang Yan sat up slowly, strands of hair falling across his face. He didn't meet her gaze. "The pain is gone," he said, voice rough. "For now."

She drew her knees to her chest, hugging them tightly. "What was that? Why did it... Why did we?" She couldn't finish any question, not with the memory of his lips on hers still burning in her mind.

He stood, unsteady at first, then gathering his composure with the iron discipline she'd come to expect. He raked a hand through his hair, avoiding her eyes. "It was... necessary." His tone was clipped, defensive. "The fire would have devoured me otherwise."

She flinched, the words stinging more than she wanted to admit. "It didn't feel like necessity," she muttered, but he either didn't hear or pretended not to.

They both rose, awkward and careful to give each other space, the corridor suddenly too small for the storm that had just passed through.

Yue Lian tried to focus on the practical. "Did I hurt you? When your... when our magic collided?"

He shook his head, finally looking at her, a long, searching look, as if trying to solve a riddle that had plagued him for centuries. "No. You healed me. But it is not a cure. It is... a reprieve."

They stood in silence, the tension between them shifting from anger to confusion to something far more dangerous.

When Cang Yan finally spoke, his voice was low and uncertain, a rare thing for him. "You should rest. This... whatever it was... was not easy for either of us."

She nodded, brushing past him toward her chamber. Their arms brushed, and the contact sent a shiver through both of them.

Yue Lian paused at her door, unable to stop herself from glancing back. He was still there, watching her with a gaze sharp as a blade, but behind it she saw uncertainty, longing, and fear that he could not name.

She slipped inside and closed the door, leaning against it for support.

Her heart raced with questions she had no answers for.

What had that kiss awakened? Why had her magic responded to him so fiercely?

Why, when she closed her eyes, did she want to feel his touch again, not out of duty, but out of something that felt dangerously close to desire?

Cang Yan remained in the hallway, staring at the place where she had vanished, his thoughts churning.

He had kissed her out of desperation, but the memory lingered, sweet and bitter and utterly forbidden.

For the first time, he was afraid of his own need, of the secrets slumbering in her soul, of the power they unleashed together.

He pressed a hand to his chest, feeling the heavenly fire banked and soothed. But he knew it would return, just as he knew he would seek her out again when it did.

Across the palace, the White Fox Twins and Zheng Yu watched from the shadows. The elder twin whispered, "Did you see that? The fire and the light? I think... I think she really might be the Moon Goddess."

Zheng Yu nodded, thoughtful and a little sad. "And if that's true, nothing will ever be simple for them again."

The twins exchanged a look, hope and worry mingling in their bright eyes.
