Chapter 11 The Crack in the Ice
POV: Sienna
The heavy slate wall of the panic suite hissed open, vomiting us back into the sprawling, sterile expanse of the penthouse living room.
The emergency klaxons had finally been silenced by the system grid, leaving behind a ringing, oppressive quiet that felt infinitely heavier than the lockdown itself.
I stumbled out of the reinforced steel cube, my knees trembling beneath the fine fabric of my black trousers. My lungs desperately pulled in the chilled, cedar-scented air of the main floor, trying to flush out the suffocating heat of Roman’s body that had enveloped me for the past three hours.
I turned to look at him, expecting to see a reflection of my own frayed nerves. I expected him to be pacing, barking orders into an encrypted comms unit, or at least showing a fraction of the adrenaline that was currently setting my veins on fire.
Instead, Roman simply walked over to the massive obsidian wet bar.
He moved with a terrifying, liquid grace, entirely unbothered by the fact that a strike team had just tried to breach his impenetrable fortress.
He unholstered his matte-black firearm, setting it on the counter with a dull clack, and picked up a heavy crystal decanter.
He poured two fingers of amber scotch, his face an impenetrable mask of carved granite.
The sheer, absolute indifference radiating from him made my blood boil.
For three hours, I had been pressed flush against his chest in the dark.
I had felt the microscopic hitches in his breathing, the undeniable tension humming through his muscles every time my hip accidentally brushed against his thigh.
I had practically suffocated on the thick, unspoken desire pooling in that cramped space.
And now, he was just going to flick a switch and shut it all down?
He was just going to go back to being the untouchable, emotionless Don?
I couldn't take it. The suffocating parameters of this cage were driving me insane, but his clinical detachment was going to kill me.
"Is that it?" I demanded, my voice cracking like a whip through the silent room.
Roman didn't turn around. He brought the crystal tumbler to his lips, taking a slow, measured sip. "The threat has been neutralized, Sienna. Vosk is managing the cleanup on the lower levels. The penthouse is secure."
"I'm not talking about the threat," I snapped, marching across the black marble floor.
I didn't stop at a safe distance. I deliberately breached the unspoken perimeter he always maintained, coming to a halt directly beside him at the wet bar.
"I'm talking about you. You lock me in a vault, you force me into a marriage, you dictate when I breathe, and then you just pour a drink like none of this is happening.
Are you actually a machine, Roman? Or are you just entirely dead inside? "
He finally lowered his glass. His jaw flexed—a microscopic tightening of the muscle beneath his skin. "You are exhausted, and your adrenaline is spiking. Go to your room, wife. We will discuss this tomorrow."
"Stop calling me that," I sneered, a reckless, wild energy hijacking my limbs. I reached out and violently shoved the crystal tumbler out of his hand. It didn't shatter—he caught it before it tipped over—but the amber liquid sloshed violently over the rim, staining the pristine marble counter.
Roman froze. The air in the penthouse plummeted by ten degrees.
"Careful, Sienna," he rumbled, his voice dropping into a lethal, gravelly octave that vibrated directly against my ribs. He slowly turned his head, his midnight eyes locking onto mine with the predatory stillness of a striking viper. "Do not confuse my restraint for weakness."
"Restraint?" I laughed, a jagged, breathless sound.
I stepped even closer, completely invading his space.
The heat rolling off his chest was a physical pressure, warring with the freezing chill in his eyes.
I tilted my head back, refusing to back down.
"This isn't restraint. It's cowardice. You hide behind this bespoke suit and this terrifying Don persona because you're terrified. "
"Terrified," he repeated flatly, the word dripping with dark amusement.
"Yes," I whispered, fueled by a desperate need to see him break.
I raised my trembling hand and pressed my palm flat against the center of his chest. Beneath the crisp white cotton of his shirt, his heart was not beating with the calm, measured rhythm of a machine.
It was hammering against his ribs, heavy and frantic, betraying the icy facade he wore so perfectly.
"You pretend you feel nothing. You pretend I'm just a vulnerability you have to manage.
But your heart is racing, Roman. You're terrified because you know if you drop the mask for even a second, you won't be able to handle what you actually feel. "
A muscle feathered rapidly at his temple. His breathing shallowed, his chest rising and falling against my palm in sharp, jagged increments.
"Take your hand off me," he ordered softly.
"Make me," I challenged, my voice a breathless whisper. I slid my hand upward, my fingertips grazing the heated skin of his throat just above his collar. "Show me the monster everyone is so afraid of. Show me—"
The snap was instantaneous and entirely violent.
Before I could finish the sentence, Roman’s hands shot out. His massive palms gripped my hips with bruising, possessive force, entirely lifting me off the ground. My gasp of shock was swallowed by the sudden motion as he slammed me down onto the edge of the freezing obsidian wet bar.
My legs parted entirely on instinct as I landed, and Roman didn't hesitate.
He stepped squarely into the vee of my thighs, pinning me completely against the cold stone.
The extreme contrast of the freezing marble at my back and the nuclear, scorching heat of his body pressing flush against my center sent a violent, electric shockwave straight through my core.
I looked up, the breath completely knocked out of my lungs.
The icy Don was gone. The stoic guardian was dead.
The man staring down at me was completely unhinged.
His eyes were entirely blown, the pupils dilated until they were bottomless pits of pitch-black lust. His breathing was ragged, his chest heaving as he leaned in, bracing his hands on the marble on either side of my hips, caging me in a trap of pure, suffocating desire.
"You want the monster?" Roman breathed, his voice a guttural, filthy rasp that scraped right down my spine. The scent of scotch and bergamot enveloped me, heavy and intoxicating. "You think this is me feeling nothing?"
He deliberately rolled his hips forward, pressing the hard, heavy ridge of his arousal flush against my center. A strangled whimper tore from my throat, my hands flying up to grip his broad shoulders as the room violently tilted on its axis.
"I keep my distance," Roman snarled softly, his face lowering until his lips were a millimeter from mine, the friction of his breath scorching my skin, "because if I let the ice crack, Sienna...
if I let myself touch you the way I actually want to, I will not stop until I have entirely consumed you.
I will ruin you for anyone else, and I will enjoy every goddamn second of it. "
He didn't kiss me. He hovered right on the agonizing precipice, his thumb coming up to drag roughly across my swollen bottom lip, leaving me completely breathless and burning.
The terrifying reality washed over me, drowning out every shred of my rebellion.
His coldness wasn't indifference. It was a dam holding back a terrifying ocean of obsession, and I had just deliberately hammered the first crack into the concrete.
