Chapter 12 External Pressures
POV: Sienna
The phantom weight of Roman’s body was a physical brand seared into my skin.
Hours had passed since the explosive confrontation at the wet bar, yet my pulse still thrummed with a frantic, bruised rhythm.
I was pacing the length of my guest suite, the heavy silk carpet doing nothing to muffle the chaotic roaring in my ears.
Every time I closed my eyes, I didn’t see the dark, sterile walls of my gilded cage.
I saw the pitch-black, bottomless lust in Roman’s eyes.
I felt the agonizing friction of his hips pressing flush against mine, pinning me to the marble, radiating a nuclear heat that threatened to entirely consume me.
I will not stop until I have entirely consumed you.
His guttural threat echoed in my skull, a dark promise that left me shivering, terrifyingly suspended between blinding panic and a wicked, traitorous arousal I couldn't suppress.
I needed a distraction. I needed to remind myself that the man who had caged me against the counter was a sociopath, a tyrant who wielded control like a scalpel.
I slipped out of my suite, the heavy oak door clicking softly behind me.
The penthouse was shrouded in shadows, the floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the bruised, midnight skyline of the Vesperine District.
I moved down the eastern corridor, my stockinged feet silent against the slate.
A faint, oscillating hum drew my attention. It was a low-frequency vibration that rattled the baseboards, accompanied by a sharp, icy-blue light spilling from the ajar door of Roman’s private office.
I pressed my back against the chilled wall, creeping toward the sliver of open space.
The office was a cavernous vault of dark mahogany and brushed steel.
The main lighting was killed. In the center of the room, Roman sat at the head of a massive obsidian conference table, illuminated entirely by the azure glow of four life-sized, high-definition holographic projections.
The hololink emitters built into the table cast the flickering, three-dimensional figures of the highest-ranking Dons and Capos in the underworld.
I held my breath, gripping the edge of the doorframe so tightly my knuckles turned white.
Roman had discarded his vest. He sat perfectly relaxed in his crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up, a fresh crystal tumbler of scotch resting near his right hand.
The unhinged, feral predator who had practically devoured me with his eyes hours ago was completely gone.
In his place sat the untouchable Don—a man carved from glacial ice and absolute, terrifying authority.
"The perimeter breach was a coordinated effort, Luvaris," a hologram at the far end of the table snarled.
The digital projection identified him as Capo Dravek, an older, scarred brute who controlled the northern weapon shipments.
His blue avatar flickered with static as he leaned forward, slamming a fist onto his own desk miles away.
"Jorath Nethra is dead, yes, but his loyalists are scattering. They blew a sub-level grid in your own tower. You brought the Moretti girl into the stronghold, and now you’ve invited a goddamn war into our laps. "
Roman didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice to defend himself.
He simply picked up his glass, taking a slow, measured sip of scotch as he let the silence stretch.
It was a calculated, suffocating tactic.
The longer he said nothing, the more the tension in the room ratcheted upward, bleeding the confidence out of the other three holograms.
"I did not invite a war, Dravek," Roman finally murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal slide of silk over razor blades. "I extinguished one before it could ignite. The Moretti assets are now securely bound to my bloodline. The transition of power is complete."
"Is it?" Dravek challenged, his digital face contorting with a sneer.
"You married a liability. A spoiled eighteen-year-old brat who couldn't hold a knife, let alone a syndicate. She’s not an asset, Luvaris. She’s a target.
And as long as she breathes, Nethra's remaining men will try to claim her head to shatter your claim. "
My stomach plummeted. Dravek was right. I wasn't just a captive; I was the bleeding bait in a shark tank.
"And they will die trying," Roman replied, entirely unbothered.
"We are bleeding resources cleaning up your mess!" Dravek shouted, his avatar glitching violently with the force of his anger. "I lost four men tonight sweeping the docks for Nethra’s stragglers. Because of your new little whore, we are—"
The word didn't even have time to fully resonate in the air before the atmosphere in the office violently shattered.
Roman didn't yell. He didn't stand up. He merely flicked his gaze to a secondary monitor on his desk and tapped a single keystroke.
On the hololink, Dravek’s avatar suddenly stiffened.
The Capo’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as a massive shadow stepped into the frame directly behind him.
It was Vosk. The silent enforcer hadn't been cleaning up the lower levels of the penthouse at all. Roman had deployed him to Dravek’s stronghold the second the lockdown ended.
Vosk’s massive hand wrapped around Dravek’s throat, yanking the older man’s head back with bone-snapping force. A matte-black suppressor was pressed firmly into the hollow beneath Dravek’s jaw.
The other three holograms collectively recoiled, a stunned, breathless silence descending over the digital conference.
Roman leaned forward, resting his forearms on the obsidian table. The blue light caught the sharp, merciless planes of his face, highlighting the absolute monster he truly was to the rest of the world.
"The next time you refer to my wife as anything other than your superior, Dravek," Roman whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, apocalyptic promise, "Vosk will not hold his fire.
You are alive right now because I find your shipping routes moderately useful.
But if you ever question my authority, my security, or my property again, I will erase your entire bloodline from the face of this city. Nod if you understand."
On the feed, Dravek, choking under Vosk’s iron grip, gave a frantic, jerky nod.
"Good," Roman murmured smoothly. "Meeting adjourned."
He hit the kill switch. The four azure holograms instantly vanished, plunging the cavernous office back into oppressive, heavy darkness.
My chest was heaving. I stood frozen in the corridor, my mind reeling from the casual, terrifying display of absolute dominance.
He had ordered an assassination by proxy without breaking a sweat.
This was the man who had sworn to stand between me and the dark.
He wasn't just a guardian. He was the devil himself, ruling a kingdom of ash and blood.
I took a trembling step backward, desperate to retreat to the safety of my room before he sensed my presence.
"You can step out of the shadows, Sienna," Roman’s voice drifted through the ajar door, perfectly level, slicing cleanly through the darkness. He hadn't turned his head. He hadn't even looked in my direction. "I knew you were standing there the entire time."
My breath caught painfully in my throat. I was hopelessly, irrevocably trapped, and the most terrifying realization of all was that the devil knew exactly how to keep me.
