Everlyn

After Zephyr’s emotional conversation with me and our kiss, we went to bed together, falling into an exhausted sleep.

However, I surfaced to the sound of his alarm.

He’d set it to make sure we didn’t sleep past the five o’clock deadline to return to the clubhouse.

He set it for four. The alarm turned off. His mouth nuzzled my ear.

“Go back to sleep. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I opened my eyelids to see him smiling down at me.

“No, I want to get up. We should shower. We didn’t before we went to bed.”

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Yes, I’m positive,” I said as I tossed off the covers and hopped out of bed. I headed for the bathroom. I froze when his voice caught me.

“Evie, you’re moving without any problems. Do you hurt?” he asked slowly.

As he said it, I recalled the gunshot wound. I thought for a moment, then turned to stare at him, amazed.

“Leif, I don’t hurt at all. I can’t feel the wound at all. I forgot about it.”

He came bounding out of bed. I had on one of his T-shirts.

I pulled it on before getting into bed. He came up and turned my back to him and raised the hem up, exposing my back.

I felt him touch the chest seal over the bullet hole.

Then he peeled it away. His swift inhale made me turn my head as far as it would go.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing is wrong.”

“Then what’s up with that sound?”

“Evie, the hole is gone. It’s closed up. All that remains is a scar. I’ve never seen that except in one of us, the cursed,” he said barely above a whisper. His fingers kept grazing across the spot.

“It’s gone?” I replied, incredulous.

“Yeah, hang on.” he moved over to the nightstand and grabbed his cell phone. After a few moments, he held it in front of my face. My mouth dropped open. The photo showed the wound was closed, leaving only a reddish scar.

When he put the phone down, Zephyr pressed the spot all over. Other than the faintest soreness, I felt nothing. Dropping my shirt, Zephyr backed to the edge of the bed, taking me with him. He brought me down to sit sideways on his lap. He had an awed look on his face.

“You know what this means, don’t you? That redemption has started. You might be immortal, like me,” he croaked.

My eyes stung with tears. “And if that’s true, it means we have forever together, if we want. And if this part of the curse is true, then that means I can…”

“You might be able to get pregnant,” he said in a strangled voice.

“Oh, my God!”

We sat there, holding each other, not saying a word for about ten minutes before we got ourselves into gear. He had work to do, and we had news to impart. I couldn’t wait to see how the rest of the club took the revelation.
