Epilogue
The sun hadn’t woken up yet, and for once, Sonnet didn’t mind being up so early. Lately, she enjoyed this time to herself and used it to take Goose for a walk or, like now, to visit her mother.
She has brought Goose with her this time to her grandparents’ estate, letting him roll in things he shouldn’t. Washing him was difficult now that he was no longer a two-month-old puppy. An entire year felt like it was forever ago.
“Here,” Adalynn whispered, still dressed in her silk pajamas, as she brought out steaming cups of coffee.
“You didn’t have to do that, Grandma.”
“Well, I know you’ll be catching a flight in a few hours to visit Felix’s family in Maine.
I wanted to say goodbye.” Adalynn sat down on the grass beside her, both of them looking at her mother’s grave.
It was decorated frequently with flowers.
Adalynn’s doing. Sonnet had also noticed how Adalynn never trimmed the branches on the Willow that hung over her headstone.
This way, it was as if her mother was always being held.
Sonnet tucked her knees into her chest, and when she took a sip of her coffee, she smiled. “Am I tasting creamer?”
Adalynn shrugged her shoulders. “I think I have finally learned you don’t like your coffee black, so your grandpa and I bought some flavors a little bit ago.”
Sonnet nodded her head gently and licked the taste of salted caramel off her lips.
To be loved is to be seen.
We have a lot of people in our lives who see us.
We do.
Adalynn reached over and brushed her fingers through Sonnet’s hair.
It was shorter now, up to her shoulder, and very different.
Sonnet used to dye her hair pink for her mother, but now, her mother was no longer lost. She was home, which meant there was no longer a need to remember her when Sonnet could sit by her grave and simply be with her.
“Is Kai still dying his hair?”
“Yes,” Sonnet laughed. “And Jude. I tried telling them they didn’t have to anymore, now that I’m trying to grow mine back to blond. But Kai is using purple for all his music marketing, and Jude’s doing it just to be in competition with Kai.”
Adalynn laughed breathlessly. “They love you so much.”
“They do. That’s why we’ll have to be back from Maine in a couple of weeks. They are determined to host a party for our one-year anniversary.”
“One year already?”
Sonnet couldn’t believe it either. An entire year had already passed in the blink of an eye since they officially bonded themselves to each other, and everything had changed accordingly.
Zayden had managed to write popular songs for two artists, one of them Gianni, a rising pop star and a friend.
Zayden helped Kai as well, who was already a star as a solo artist. Felix was a star, too; his cooking channel was a huge success.
Jude was just happy to be working with Sonnet every day at her doggy day care, which had become very popular, and now they were building a doggy day care bus to pick up their clients.
They were completely moved into their new house, which Summer and Scarlett loved to frequent constantly. They had even added a chicken coop recently, only to quickly learn they had bought ducks instead of chickens, and now they were building a pond for them.
Everything was perfect, as perfect as something could be.
Sonnet set her coffee cup down. She had only taken two sips. She then placed her hands on her stomach and smiled sheepishly at Adalynn. “Can I tell you a secret?”
Sonnet’s happily ever after was far from over.
