Chapter 13-The morning everything went wrong
Jonathan's POV…
It has been two weeks of living with Audrey, and these past weeks have been the worst days of my life.
I love my space, and having to share it with someone is not my thing, especially someone like Audrey. She has all these crazy routines that are driving me insane.
First, she practices yoga and dances along with a coach on TV. I don't have an issue with that, but she always cranks the volume so high I can hear it all the way in my wing. Also, she has this habit of shouting, all in the name of singing, whenever she is doing something.
As someone who values my peace and quiet, it has been really hard trying to put up with her.
I can't even focus on work. I can't sleep, because late into the night, she watches cartoons. I mean, who does that? At her age, she still watches cartoons meant for kids.
She puts on such a confident and bold look outside; you'd never expect her to be this childish inside.
“Hmm," I sighed.
Today, we have investors for my tech launch coming in. So, I have to go through and vet the pitch my team has prepared. I'll leave for the office as soon as I'm done to meet Richard and everyone else before the investors arrive.
?Love is gonna put you up and never put you down?
I looked up from the papers in frustration. Not today. I won't let her have her way. Besides, the music was playing so loud, it didn't seem to be coming from her wing.
I stomped out in anger and rushed downstairs.
"What is the meaning of this?” I shouted angrily. I couldn't even hear myself.
She was playing music at a very high volume and was dancing alongside the coach on TV.
"What?” she asked, still shouting.
"I said, what are you doing?”
"I can't hear you!” she answered and turned back to her dancing.
I went to the music player by the fireplace and turned it off.
She turned and faced me immediately. "What was that for? Why did you turn off my music?”
I didn't want to respond. I was too angry.
"Just in case you've forgotten, I paid half for this house, so I have as much right as you do to do what I want,” she said, moving towards the music player to turn it back on.
I rushed over and snatched the music player from her. It was quite heavy.
"I've had enough of your antics, and I'm sick and tired of it. Either you play this music at a reasonable volume, or you turn it off,” I said with finality.
She looked at me with mockery in her eyes. "Oh, I'm scared.”
“You can't even act your age. Watching cartoons? Seriously?" I retorted, trying to match her mocking tone.
“It's nothing to you. You should have considered how I'd manage in this house before buying it," she countered.
“And playing love songs. If you're a love addict, keep it to yourself. You don't need to show the whole world how much of a love person you are. I just have to warn you, don't expect any love from me.”
She gasped and then laughed hysterically.
"Look at you. Thinking so highly of yourself. First, that music is from a movie.” She raised her phone, where a movie was playing; she had connected it via Bluetooth to the speaker.
"You're so dumb you didn't even realize that.
Second, don't flatter yourself. If you were the last man on earth, I'd rather remain single than have anything to do with you.”
I swallowed hard. That was a slap to my face.
“You're insolent, with a rude attitude," I snapped, glaring at her.
“Can't blame me. I learned from the best," she shrugged.
“I'm working. I don't want any noise, and you're distracting me.”
"You'll have to deal with that yourself. It's your problem, not mine.” She snatched the music player back from me and turned the music on.
How was she so strong?
I rushed towards her, collected it again, and smashed it on the floor.
Let's see how she plays music now.
"You're very foolish, you know that? I can easily get another one or simply play it on the TV at full volume. What are you going to do? Smash the TV?” She laughed again.
“Don't test me. My patience with you is very thin. I'd advise you not to stretch it further."
We were so immersed in our argument that we didn't notice Richard rushing inside.
“What are you both doing?"
Audrey and I ignored him.
"Are you guys really doing this this morning?”
"Hey, Mr. Puppet. If you know how you got in here, you better get out the same way,” Audrey snapped at him and turned back to face me.
"Well, I have some news this morning," he continued.
“Your parents are here."
“What? Whose parents?" I asked.
“Your parents," he affirmed.
“Why did you bring them here? I warned you not to show them where we lived!” I demanded.
Just then, I heard my mom's voice. “Jonathan Cavendish, you better start explaining things now before I knock your head off. Just calm down, Matthew."
I looked at Audrey, and her eyes were as wide as mine. Alarmed, and as if on impulse, I rushed to Audrey and held her close.
My hands went around her waist, while she rested her head on my shoulder.
The moment my parents stepped into view, I gazed romantically at Audrey.
“Hey, baby. I hope you slept well," I smiled like a fool in love.
“Yes, my love. I did,” she answered sweetly.
“Wait." My hand reached for her face. “You have something there."
My parents just stood there, watching us. I could see them out of the corner of my eye.
“What is it?" she asked, touching her cheek.
“It seems you drooled, and it's all on your face.”
Her eyes grew wide, and her cheeks burned with embarrassment. I've gotten my revenge.
I looked at my parents, just in time to see my father's gaze shift, from us to…the broken music player on the floor.
