Chapter 14-Jonathan's mother hates Audrey
Audrey’s POV…
I wore a smile on my face, but deep down, I was fuming.
I knew exactly why Jonathan said I had drool on my face. What he didn’t know was that he was playing with fire and I intended to burn him after this little act was over.
“It appears you both just got out of bed,” his father said.
He wasn’t looking at us when he spoke.
His gaze was fixed on the floor. On the… shattered music player.
My stomach tightened.
Jonathan had better be thinking of a very good excuse for that. He was the one who caused it.
“Yes, Father. We had the loveliest night together,” Jonathan said smoothly.
His father finally lifted his eyes to us.
“Together you say?" His mother asked.
“Yes, Mom"
Her eyes shifted from Jonathan to me. I could see the disdain and disgust in her eyes, the judgement. She didn't bother hiding it.
She looked back at him. “So you were serious?"
She let out a soft scoff. “Out of the abundance of women in this world, classy, pretty and well-behaved ladies, you settled for this one"
“I beg your pardon" I gasped at her words.
Heat rushed to my face. How could she say that to me? Even if she didn't like me or had something against me, she didn't have to be so openly cruel about it.
She didn't spare me another glance. “Why her? What about Maya? She's the best fit for you"
“You know I don't like models. The way they sell their body out just to make money is not acceptable by me and that was the reason I didn't want you getting involved with one” she continued.
I couldn't breathe anymore. My chest felt too heavy. I was burning from all the embarrassment.
I shifted a bit from Jonathan and looked at him. I expected him to defend me or say something, but he didn't. He just stood there and watched his mother say mean things to me.
I quickly removed his hands from my waist. He had no right to touch me.
"Maya is such a good girl. Respectful, hardworking, diligent and very pretty"
Why did I receive good home training from my mom? Because if I hadn't, I would have given this woman before me a piece of my mind. I'm not fond of disrespecting elders, even to my detriment.
“Lucy, it's okay. Remember your health” his father spoke. All the while she was speaking, his eyes were on me. He seemed to have something to say but didn't.
“No. I'm not okay with my son being engaged to a…”
"Mom” Jonathan cut her. "You had a long journey. Why not rest first? We'll talk later”
“Ooh yes. We'll have lots of time, because I intend staying the night”
"What? You're staying the night?”Jonathan asked.
"Yes, I am. I need to make sure she is worthy of being by my son's side” she eyed me.
I looked away and fisted my hands
“I won't stay. I have other important things to do than to meddle in your life" his father spoke up.
“Richard, be a gentleman and get my bags from the car"
“Yes ma'am" Richard bowed and went outside.
She brushed past me and pulled Jonathan along.
“Why didn't you tell me you bought another house?" I heard her say.
I sighed heavily and stomped upstairs and slammed the door behind me.
Minutes later, I heard a knock at the door. I didn't respond. The door opened slowly and Jonathan came in.
“I didn't ask you to come inside" I growled at him.
“I know. I'm sorry. This is your space and I shouldn't be intruding, but you know my mom is staying the night, so she's staying in my room"
“That's your problem, not mine. I don't care"
“Besides, we can't claim to be engaged and we're sleeping in separate rooms,” he said.
“Oh, so you know we claim to be engaged then why didn't you say anything when your mom was speaking so mean to me?" I asked.
He sighed and rubbed the back of his head.
I scoffed. “So you're a mommy's boy. The ones that never stand up to their mother no matter what she's doing. Whether right or wrong"
"I'm not”
"Don't you say a word. I haven't asked you to speak”
"Let me get something. If we were really engaged, you'd let your mother say those things to me and you'd do absolutely nothing about it?”
"How would you expect her to respect me if you kept calm while she did that? I continued.
“Hmm. Why didn't you tell me she didn't like my career?”
"I didn't want you to feel bad about it. And it never occurred to me that she might actually cause this trouble"
“Trouble? So you do know she caused trouble?"
I laughed. “Since I met you, I've only encountered people that looked down and thought wrong about my career. Mr Whitmore, your mom and who knows other people I'll still meet?"
“I'm sorry for my mom's behaviour…"
“No, don't be sorry. I can't be with you, whether pretend or real, if I get judged every day for my career. My career is something I am proud of, no matter what you, your mom or anyone else thinks. I can't do this" I sighed and walked past him.
“Where are you going?" He asked.
“Anywhere but here. I need to clear my head and this environment is too toxic for me at the moment" I replied.
“It may not be safe for you alone out there. I'll ask Richard to go with you" he offered.
I looked at him. I knew he was only trying to appease me for his mom's wrong behaviour.
“I don't need you to send him and don't act like you care anyway. I can handle myself" I said with finality and left the room.
I hurried down the stairs, straight for the exit. I was dialing Lena's number. I wanted her to come pick me up. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to drive.
Just as I had reached the door and wanted to pull the knob.
"Little miss model”
I spun around immediately to see his mom by the stairs in Jonathan's wing.
I rolled my eyes. I was very sure she saw it, but I didn't care.
"Are you going somewhere?” She asked.
"I am” I tried not to sound as hateful as I wanted.
“I'm hungry and I want you to make me dinner" she said with finality and went upstairs.
I stared after her, my hands curling into fists. If this woman thought I was her servant, she had no idea who she was dealing with.
