Chapter 19-Audrey is the prime suspect
Audrey's POV…
My head throbbed so hard, I felt like my head would fall off.
It seemed like I had been in a deep and enclosed space and I was just coming out from it.
My eyelids felt too heavy to open. I had no energy at all.
‘Am I still alive?’ I wondered.
I opened my eyes slowly, and it seemed the entire place was completely dark.
I tried sitting and I felt something or someone hold my arm.
Slowly, I began to see light.
“Audrey, are you okay? Can you hear me?"
That voice was familiar. I blinked severally and the more I blinked, the clearer my environment was.
I was able to see clearly and I saw Lena holding my hands.
"Lena, what happened?” I tried sitting up. “I feel so weak"
“Just lay back" she gently pushed my shoulders back so that I was laying on the bed.
“What happened to me? I feel like I'm just coming out of hibernation"
She sighed and looked ahead.
What was she looking at?
I turned my head slowly and saw Jonathan seated on a chair.
What was he doing here?
"It's a long story” Jonathan started.
“Well cut it short then…” I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. I didn't even have the energy to snap at him.
"He's right, Audrey. It's a long story and we should be more concerned about your health than what happened” Lena said.
"How long have I been like this?” I asked as I rubbed my stomach.
Why was it hurting?
Jonathan and Lena exchanged glances.
"Three days,” Jonathan said.
"Sorry?” I asked.
“You've been asleep for three days"
My eyes grew wide as I stared at him. “What happened and I demand an answer" I said with gritted teeth.
“He…um… gave you…” Lena started but was cut off by Jonathan.
"I gave you an overdose of medication and that resulted in three long days of sleep,” he said.
I didn't even have the energy to be surprised or shocked or even yell.
Wait… if it's three days, that means, my shoots and… my ambassadorship.
I breathed slowly and turned to Lena. "What about my shoots and…”
"Don't worry. They are waiting for you” she assured.
My stomach growled. “I need food"
“I'm on it" Lena said and dashed out of the room.
It was just Jonathan's and I.
“I'm sorry about that"
I looked at him. “What exactly are you sorry about? The fact that I've been asleep for three whole days, totally unaware of what was going on around me and now I feel like crap. I don't even feel like I own my body. Or the fact that you did it on purpose?"
He frowned. “I'm sorry for all of that and that you feel that way. But I never did that on purpose"
I scoffed and looked away. "I wasn't expecting you to admit”
There was silence, then I raised my head and looked at him. He looked sad… actually… he looked hurt, but he was quick to mask it.
“Assuming things isn't a very good trait, you know that?" He said.
What does that mean?
“Well, at least you're okay now. My conscience is clear. Now, my life can return back to normal" he said and walked out of the room.
Soon after, Lena came inside.
“What are you thinking about?" She asked me as she set the food on the table.
“You know I don't eat anywhere else that is not the dining…" I started as I swoon my legs down from the bed with the only energy I could muster. “But I'll let this one pass because I don't have the energy to get down to the dining"
I smiled as the aroma of the food filled my nostrils. Creamy chicken soup. She pulled out a seat for me.
“You haven't answered my question yet" she pressed on.
“Nothing much" I winced as the hot food touched my tongue.
“If you say so…" she said, looking skeptically at me.
“I have a question" I paused, trying to find the right words. “What was Jonathan doing here when I woke up? I mean, I know he caused the trouble, but I'm asking what he was doing these past days when I was asleep. Was he always in my room like that?"
“Yes, probably. I wasn't here most times unless to bathe you and change you, so he was the one that did basically every other thing. So, he must have been here with you all the time"
I nodded slowly.
“That reminds me. It happened”
I furrowed my brows.
"You had a nightmare on the first night. I wasn't around, so he was the one that took care of you. He told me later, and he said you mentioned the ‘forbidden person'.” She added.
I sighed. "Was it that bad and did I say much about that person?”
“I don't know how severe it was, but he mentioned that he prevented you from getting hurt, that means it was serious to some extent and he only told me that you mentioned him" she explained.
I bent my head slowly as I felt a more severe pain in my abdomen. I hissed in pain.
“Sorry about that," Lena said.
I raised my head and looked at her. “Sorry about what?"
“Well…” she hesitated. "It's that time of the month"
“What. It came out during my sleep?" I asked. I was a bit embarrassed. Thank God it was only Lena that knew about it.
“Actually, it came out yesterday. I didn't find any sanitary in here, so I asked Jonathan for help"
“You did what?" I screamed. That only increased the pain I felt.
“I had no other option. I couldn't find any sanitary, so I had to tell Jonathan to help me get one" she blabbed.
My mouth and eyes were wide staring at her.
Jonathan bought the sanitary? How will I ever face him again? Oh my God.
I had never felt this embarrassed in all my life and of all people, it had to be that jerk, Jonathan.
“But it's okay. He wouldn't react to that or make fun of you because of that. He understood actually" Lena said.
“Understood?"
“These past three days, he was kind of different. He took good care of you. Even when you had the nightmare, he said he had to hold you to stop you from hurting yourself and he also asked about your shoots. I don't know if it's because he was feeling guilty or if he actually… you know… cared”
“Thanks for telling me that" I simply said and started eating.
Was he trying to act like a good guy so that he would deceive me and that would make things easier for him when he strikes?
I stayed in my room till the next day. The doctor ran some tests and confirmed that I was stable and could go about my activities but with caution.
It was evening and I was feeling bored and just wanted to take a stroll. Staying inside for almost a week without going out did a bad thing to my body.
I gained weight. I could tell from how my body felt and I confirmed it when I tried my clothes. I needed fresh air and my legs felt too stiff.
I left my wing and descended the stairs. I saw Jonathan in the living room. He wasn't working, he seemed to be thinking.
I got down from the stairs but he didn't notice me. I walked past him and sat by the fireplace.
He didn't act like he saw me. I stood up and sat on the couch opposite him. I picked the remote to turn on the television.
“Hmm mmm" I cleared my throat. And that was when he finally looked at me.
"It's you” was all he said and looked away.
I needed to apologise for accusing him that he did that on purpose. Lena explained everything to me. I also wanted to thank him. It was one thing to cause something, and it was another thing to take responsibility.
He was writing in a book. “What exactly are you sorry about?" He didn't look at me. “Is it the fact that you got so drunk and your manager had to ask me to pick you and made me risk my safety or the fact that yesterday, you acted like a total…” he paused.
"A total bitch?" I raised a brow.
“That isn't the word I was looking for though" he said and continued writing.
“I'm sorry for all of that" I apologised.
“Hmm" that was his only response.
‘He knows what happened that night’ my subconscious reminds me.
I felt embarrassed.
Come on Audrey. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. It happens to all females, including his crazy mom.
“Thanks anyways. Lena told me how you took care of me…"
“It's nothing personal. I was just trying to be responsible for my actions and to make sure that I have a clear conscience at the end” he replied.
I nodded.
“When are we ending this?" I asked.
He finally looked up.
“When is all this fake engagement that wants to make me pull my hair, going to end?" I repeated.
“As soon as our names are off the public as regards the scandal" he responded.
“So, no specific time frame?" I asked.
“No," he said.
“While we're at it, I had someone do a proper investigation on everything and everyone that crossed paths with us that night of the scandal” I said.
“I've got a list of people here that we interacted with and after everything, I have three people on my suspect list,” he said.
"Let's hear it then”
He smiled with the corner of his lips. “We'll start with the first one on the list, who is actually my prime suspect"
“So, who's that?" I folded my arms.
“You" he said and looked at me with no expression on his face.
“Excuse me"
I hope you enjoyed the chapter you guys. So sorry for the late update. I was preparing for exams. But here's one for you.
