Chapter 10
CHAPTER TEN
MAKARI “HAVOC” SANCHEZ
A FEW DAYS LATER
“What do you mean you’re sick?! Sick with what?” Kelechi yelled, and I simpered.
“Bro, stop all that yelling, nigga. I’m sick, not deaf.”
I’d been trying to explain to him for the past ten minutes that a nigga caught a cold, so I couldn’t walk the streets with him today. It wasn’t like we had any important shit to do, and I really just wanted to stay home to relax today. His crybaby ass wasn’t trying to hear that though!
“I’m coming over,” he said. I kissed my teeth.
“Coming over for what? I’m not a fucking kid anymore, Hell, and you ain’t my bitch.”
He was running over here like I needed my older brother, or he was my damn woman.
“I promise if you bring your ugly ass over here, I ain’t opening the fucking door,” I threatened.
“Pussy,” Hell snapped, and I fell out laughing.
“Boy, it’s one damn day. You will be alright, plus you got Sony with you.”
Orlando still had my brother parading around trying to be seen.
All day, every day, Hell would be just going to meaningless places because Orlando thought it was a good idea.
If you asked me, it was childish as fuck, especially because I knew shit like that wasn’t going to get Sincere’s attention.
I’d seen his mans at the club yet again, watching my brother make a fool of himself.
Both Hell and Orlando thought being the loudest nigga in the room was the same as having power, but it wasn’t.
They were doing nothing but drawing unnecessary attention to themselves, but they weren’t trying to listen to me.
I’d voiced my opinion to my brother a few days ago, and he brushed me off, showing me that he was completely wrapped up in Orlando’s way of thinking.
My brother was acting like a show-off, just how Sony moved, and dare I say it, I was starting to dislike being around him.
So, this cold I picked up from somewhere was a blessing in disguise. At least for one day, I could be away from this fucking show and dance bullshit. My life was always hectic because of Orlando, so I welcomed the quiet. The stillness of my own space so that I could think.
Hell sighed and said, “Alright, but if you need anything, let me know.”
“Will do,” I promised.
We exchanged a few more words and ended the call.
I sneezed, and my fucking throat burned. I was pissed off because I had no idea where I got this shit from.
I woke up with a banging headache, a blocked nose, and a slight fever.
Pulling my throw blanket over my head, I left my room to see if there was anything in my kitchen that might help with how I was feeling.
On my way to the kitchen, I received a text message from Ocean.
O: OMG, I just heard you’re sick. Do you need me to bring anything?
I sucked my teeth, knowing that no matter what, she was still texting my brother and wondered why I wouldn’t even let her near me.
I wasn’t sure if they were still fucking or not.
Hell said he wasn’t, and I halfway believed him because his wife, Ella, was certified as fuck and would definitely kill his ass.
But it had me thinking he was lying from how often he told Ocean shit about me.
If I wanted her to know I was sick, I would have told her my damn self.
I didn’t know what Hell called himself doing by telling her everything about me, but I would have been a fool to take that girl seriously.
And that was why I felt like she was in my life to keep watch.
I wanted a girl that nobody knew so that I could be sure she was all mine and there for me—not for anyone else or because my father made them. That wasn’t Ocean.
Deciding to ignore her message, I put my phone down and started looking for what I came for.
As I searched my kitchen cabinets, I heard my front door open and close. A sense of relief washed over me knowing my mama had come to see me. She’d know what to do.
I heard her footsteps approach from behind me.
“Hey Mama, you know what I can take for a cold?” I asked with my back to her. When she didn’t respond, I turned to face her, only to see some short chick standing in my fucking kitchen.
“The fuck are you?!” I yelled, making her jump.
“I’m your housekeeper, remember?”
I’d been so busy for the past two weeks that I forgot my mama said she hired somebody.
“Oh, my bad. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Shorty looked like she was about to shit herself.
“I didn’t know you were here. I can come back another day.” She rushed and turned to leave the kitchen, but I stopped her.
“Are you not here to do a job?”
She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned to look at me. I narrowed my eyes at her.
“What’s your name?” I asked. Her dark, big eyes widened a little before she cleared her throat.
“Kairi.”
For some reason, it felt like I’d seen her before.
“I’m Havoc. Don’t I know you?”
Her little bobble head bounced.
“We met a few nights ago, at The Cove. I was the bartender.”
“Oh!”
She was the chick Ocean tried to fight for talking to me, I thought as I stood there watching her.
I couldn’t really see her that good in the dark ass club, but she was pretty as fuck. Little, at least five-six, and had a light caramel complexion. Her short hair was jet black and curly, giving her an exotic look.
She had thick, long lashes that I could tell were hers, nicely shaped eyebrows, a small nose with a gold hoop, and thick, juicy lips that were glossed up.
The sports bra she was wearing revealed two diamond studs between her full breasts. I remembered she had a nice, round ass and hips that I damn sure looked at when she turned that night to make my drink.
I could definitely see why Ocean felt threatened by her. Ocean always thought she was the prettiest girl around and often clashed with anyone she realized actually looked better than her.
Kairi wasn’t wearing makeup like she was that night at the bar, and she was definitely pretty as hell with soft ass skin. But how the fuck did she end up being my damn housekeeper?
I laughed, knowing Ocean would completely lose her shit if she ever found out.
“It really is a small ass world,” I said when Kairi frowned at me, probably wondering why I was laughing.
“Yeah,” she said before clearing her throat again. “I didn’t expect you to be here.”
“I caught a cold,” I let her know.
“Oh, let me go to the store to get something for it. I’ll be right back.”
She turned to dash away before I could stop her. I shook my head, wrapped the throw blanket around my body, and went into the living area to wait for her to come back.
I must have fallen asleep because I woke up to the sound of my front door closing. My head was spinning at this point.
“I picked up some Tylenol, water, and some more fruit,” she explained, taking everything out of the grocery bag.
“I appreciate that. I damn near ate all those fruits in one day,” I let her know. When I came home last week and saw she had my shit filled with all types of fruits—watermelon, grapes, bananas, and shit—I ate everything within two days.
Plus, she had my condo smelling good as fuck from whatever products she used to clean. My mama made a good choice.
I removed the throw blanket from my body and leaned forward to pick up the Tylenol before popping two into my mouth. I reached my hand out for the bottle of water and found her staring at my tatted chest.
“You gon’ give me the water or what?”
“Sorry!” she stuttered and handed it to me. I took a mouthful while I kept my eyes on her.
It was just crazy how I only saw her a few nights ago, and this girl had been all up in my fucking condo while I wasn’t here.
“How old are you?” I asked.
“Twenty-seven,” she answered in a soft tone.
“How you know Ocean?”
“My father has worked under Viper and your dad since I was a teen. I met her and River back then by chance.”
I was surprised to know that she knew Orlando’s bitch ass.
And if she knew River, did that mean she knew Sony too? Nah, I doubt it.
“Well, how come I’ve never seen you before?” I questioned.
The night at the club a few days ago was the first time I ever saw this girl. Trust me, I would remember if I had!
“I usually worked with the catering or cleaning team,” she said. I watched the way she moved her hands so delicately as she spoke.
“Under Carlene,” I added, and she nodded. If she knew my mama’s cousin, then that would explain how she managed to get a job at The Cove and as my housekeeper. But I still couldn’t understand how our paths had never crossed before now.
“What’s up with you and Ocean?” I probed to see if she would let me know.
“Just years of not liking each other, I guess,” she said. The way her breathing changed let me know that she wasn’t telling me the whole truth, but I let her have that. She didn’t know me and didn’t owe me anything. However, knowing Ocean and her messy ass ways, I knew it was more to it than that.
“I’m going to start cleaning,” Kairi said before she disappeared toward the back. I opened a banana and sat back, eating it while my thoughts ran away with me.
At some point, I could smell the scent of the cleaning products coming from my bathroom, and it was soothing.
I leaned my head back against my sofa and closed my eyes. A few minutes later, she returned to vacuum my living area. I lifted my head and opened one eye to watch her.
I cocked my head to the side to get a better view of her ass and chuckled, knowing what was going through my mind. I suddenly had a burst of coughing. That was what my ass got for looking!
Kairi turned to look at me and tried to approach me, but I stopped her.
“I’m good,” I waved her off.
When I saw that worked and she went back to what she was doing, I quickly raised my hips to adjust my dick in my shorts.
It had been a hot minute since I’d been in the company of a female, and my dick wasn’t playing fair.
Eventually, Kairi finished what she was doing and got ready to leave.
“Your mama already paid me through Cash App, so I’m going now,” she said.
“Wait, when you here again?” I asked, and she turned to look at me.
“Next week.”
My head was shaking because I wasn’t accepting that shit. I then coughed again and cleared my throat.
“Nah, that’s not going to work for me,” I let her know. Kairi frowned, and her mouth fell.
“But your mama said I only needed to come once a week.”
I took a look around before I asked, “Is it my mama living here or me?”
“You but—”
“But nothing. Girl, I know you see me about to die!” I said before I forced myself to cough hard as shit. I almost coughed up a fucking lung!
“I know you ain’t just gonna leave me like this and expect me to do everything myself?” I said, laying it on thick.
Shit, I wasn’t waiting a whole week to see her ass again, and there were too many eyes at the club.
I knew if I even acted like I wanted to talk to her, all hell would break loose.
Ocean had been going there all the fucking time now in hopes of running into me.
So, I already knew what would happen if she saw us talking or me hanging around the bar.
She was a daddy’s girl and liked to use him to get what she wanted. I had a few run-ins with him already because of her crying to him that I wasn’t paying her any attention. That would just lead Orlando on my case, so it was easier to just play along with her than have them at my head.
The last time Ocean even thought I was trying to talk to another girl, her dad tried to push the wedding. As long as I played nice, Ocean was happy for me to take the lead for our wedding that was never going to happen.
But Kairi felt new to me—a secret that only I was privy to. A secret that fit into my world away from Ocean, Orlando, and The Society, and I wasn’t quite ready for her to go.
“In fact, I know you ain’t about to leave me hungry and shit like this. Girl, I’m practically disabled at this point. You mean as fuck.”
Kairi giggled, and it was cute—just like the rest of her.
“I bought you some soup. I was going to tell you.”
My eyes turned to slits.
“You bought it?” I asked, and she nodded. “What? You can’t cook? Make me find out my mama done hired a housekeeper who can’t cook.”
“Of course, I can, but I wasn’t sure if you wanted me in your kitchen like that, so I bought it,” she explained.
“Cool, well, I’m gonna need you here every day for the rest of this week,” I let her know.
Kairi bit into her bottom lip like she was thinking about it. Her big eyes bounced around before they landed on my face again. There was some innocence in them that was pulling me in.
“I can come until Friday, but not on the weekends. I still work with Carlene, and I can’t just leave her hanging like that.”
“Damn, girl. How many jobs you got at one time?”
She was a hustler just like me. I respected it.
“I can’t and won’t have my father worrying about me. I’m hoping he will stop working soon once he sees I can look after myself.”
I just sat there looking at her before I answered, “Your pops is lucky to have a daughter like you.”
Her face flushed red, and she thanked me.
“Okay, so I will see you tomorrow then?” I asked, standing to walk her out.
I made sure to walk a little too close to her body and felt the way she stiffened.
Oh, I was gonna enjoy fucking with her little ass.
I had no plans on touching her, because she didn’t need to be mixed up in my mess with The Society and Ocean, but a nigga could definitely look.
When Kairi slipped her feet into her Crocs, I reached around her and opened the door that I had to use to hold myself up because my head felt light.
“You should go and lie down. You don’t look too well,” she said. I agreed because I was starting to feel worse.
“Oh, and two hours isn’t long enough. You need to be here for at least four,” I said, and her mouth dropped.
“Don’t worry, I’ll pay.”
Kairi nodded and stepped out of the door. I smiled as I closed it behind her.
Going back to my living space, I picked up my phone to send my brother a text.
Me: Bro, it seems I got this shit bad as fuck. Gonna be out until the weekend.
He texted back and told me to get well soon. I had to smirk because with Kairi around, something told me I was going to get better real soon!
