Chapter TWENTY FIVE

Ariel heard the distant rumble of a truck engine as it broke the stillness of the snow-covered landscape, growing louder as it neared Cliffside BB. The sound was like a promise of hope in the midst of the frosty winter scene that had kept them all trapped inside for days.

Inside the cozy warmth of the BB, Ethan and Bradford stood by the window, their breaths fogging the glass as they eagerly peered out into the swirling snowflakes. They shared a look of anticipation, sensing that something momentous was about to happen.

”Is that what I think it is?” Ethan asked, his eyes wide with excitement.

”Looks like it,” Bradford replied, his voice tinged with relief. ”Finally, some help!”

Ariel didn’t dare hope—did she?

As the truck came into view around the bend, its powerful headlights cut through the falling snow, revealing the unmistakable sight of a snow plow attached to its front. The two men exchanged triumphant smiles as they realized that rescue was finally at hand.

”Man, you have no idea how glad I am to see that thing,” Ariel said, her voice filled with gratitude.

”Tell me about it,” Bradford agreed, placing a hand on Ariel”s shoulder. ”We”ve been stuck in here long enough. No offense to your hospitality.”

Together, they watched with bated breath as the truck rumbled closer, the sound of its engine becoming almost deafening as it approached the BB. It seemed as if the entire building held its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.

Everyone’s faces lit up like the first sunrays after a storm as the truck rolled to a stop, its engine settling into an idle purr. The driver”s door creaked open, and Darcy emerged with his signature rocker guy swagger, a wide grin splitting his face.

”Did someone order a snow plow?” he called out, his voice filled with mirth.

”About time you showed up,” Bradford teased, relief etched in every line of his face.

Jill climbed out from the passenger side, her cheeks rosy from the cold, and waved to the small group gathering by the window. ”Ralph loaned us the truck,” she said, pride swelling in her chest at her boss”s generosity. ”Figured we could help dig you guys out.”

”Thank God,” Jessica breathed, exchanging grateful glances with Bradford. ”We”ve been going stir-crazy in here.”

As if on cue, the truck”s engine revved back to life, the snow plow angling down to meet the thick blanket covering the ground. With a mechanical whir, the plow began its work, scraping against the stubborn snow that had held them captive for days.

The sound was harsh but satisfying; a symphony of metal against ice that signaled their impending freedom. Their faces remained pressed against the cold glass, watching as each pass of the plow revealed more of the pavement beneath, black and glistening like obsidian.

”Amazing how a simple machine can make such a difference, huh?” Bradford mused, his breath fogging the window once more.

”Sometimes all it takes is a little push in the right direction,” Ariel replied, her eyes never leaving the hypnotic dance of snow and steel.

”Keep it up, Darcy!” Ariel called out from the doorway, her voice warm and encouraging despite the frigid air. ”You”re doing great!”

”Thanks, Ariel!” Darcy replied, his cheeks flushed with more than just the cold. ”We”ll have you all dug out in no time.”

As the plow continued its work, the atmosphere within Cliffside BB shifted - the tension and claustrophobia that had settled over the group like a heavy blanket began to dissipate, replaced by a newfound sense of hope and camaraderie. They were no longer prisoners of the snowstorm; they were survivors, bound together by their shared experience and the love that blossomed even in the coldest of winters.

Moments later, the men of the group stood on the newly cleared driveway. Ethan and Bradford had shovels in hand, their eyes full of determination to free the snowbound cars. Behind them, Hugo and Carl prepared to join the effort, eager to contribute.

”Let”s do this,” Ethan declared, gripping his shovel tightly. The group trudged out into the cold, their breaths visible against the crisp air.

”Alright, everyone, pick a car and let”s get to work!” Bradford directed, assuming a leadership role as he always did.

The men plunged their shovels into the thick layer of snow that covered the vehicles, heaving it aside with gusto. Each movement sent arcs of white flying through the air, adding to the flurry around them. There was a growing sense of anticipation as the buried cars began to emerge from their frosty tombs.

”Never thought I”d be so happy to see a car again,” Carl joked between labored breaths, sweat glistening on his brow despite the cold.

”Tell me about it,” Hugo agreed, grunting as he tossed another shovelful of snow aside. ”I think I might kiss the hood when we”re done.”

”Save some love for the rest of us, Hugo,” Bradford teased, his laughter mingling with the sound of shoveling and the distant hum of the plow.

They all paused for a moment, leaning on shovels and surveying their progress. They had managed to clear most of the snow away from the vehicles, revealing patches of their frozen exteriors. Ariel, watching from the porch, could feel the urgency in the air, the desire to regain some semblance of normalcy after being trapped by the storm.

”Keep up the good work, guys! We”re almost there!” Jessica called out from beside Ariel, her voice full of encouragement as he resumed shoveling. Their determination was palpable, a shared resolve that fueled their efforts and drew them closer together.

As the snow continued to fly, each shovelful bringing them one step closer to freedom, the men found solace in their camaraderie. They were united by a common goal, bound together by the love that had blossomed amidst the cold and the chaos of the storm.

In that moment, as they worked side by side to unearth the snowbound cars, they knew that they were not just reclaiming their vehicles – they were reclaiming their lives. Together, they were stronger than the storm.

The sun glistened on the snow, casting a warm and inviting glow over the scene of cold determination. Ariel stood back, watching as Ethan, Bradford, Hugo, and Carl heaved shovelfuls of snow with rhythmic precision, their breath visible in the crisp air. Their laughter and words of encouragement echoed through the otherwise silent morning.

Just then, Darcy approached Ariel, his cheeks flushed from the cold and exertion. His eyes darted towards Jill for a moment, who was back in the house, helping prepare hot chocolate.

”Um, Ariel, can I talk to you for a sec?” Darcy asked nervously, shifting from one foot to the other.

”Of course, Darcy. What”s up?” Ariel responded, concern etched across her face as she turned her full attention to him.

Darcy hesitated for a moment, looking back at the group before taking a deep breath. ”So, while we were snowed in at my apartment, I... well, I confessed my feelings to Jill.” His voice trembled slightly, betraying his anxiety.

Ariel”s eyes softened, her heart swelling with empathy for her friend and coworker. ”Oh, Darcy, that”s wonderful! It must have taken a lot of courage to share something so personal. How did it go?”

”Well, I was really nervous,” Darcy admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. ”But I just couldn”t keep it in any longer. I”ve never felt this way about anyone before, and I didn”t want to miss my chance.”

”Love can be a scary thing,” Ariel agreed. ”But it”s also beautiful and worth taking risks for. What did Jill say?”

Darcy”s face lit up, the corners of his mouth lifting into a shy smile. ”She said she feels the same way, Ariel. We”re going to give this... us... a try.”

”Congratulations, Darcy!” Ariel exclaimed, pulling him into an embrace, her heart brimming with happiness for her friend. ”I”m so proud of you for taking that leap. You deserve all the love and happiness in the world.”

”Thank you, Ariel,” Darcy whispered, his voice thick with emotion. ”You”ve always been there for me, and I just... I wanted to share this with you.”

Ariel nodded, her eyes shining with joy. ”And I”m honored you chose to confide in me.”

”Truth is,” Darcy continued, his voice a little shaky, ”I”ve been feeling so anxious since I told Jill how I feel. What if things change between us? What if I”m not good enough for her?”

Ariel reached out and placed a reassuring hand on his arm. ”Darcy, you”re an incredible person, and anyone would be lucky to have you in their life. Change can be scary, but it can also lead to wonderful things.”

Darcy”s eyes met hers, searching for the unwavering support that Ariel always offered. His lips quivered for a moment, and then he let out a long breath he seemed to have been holding in.

”Jill agreed to become my girlfriend, Ariel,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, as if saying it aloud might shatter the reality of it. “How crazy is that?”

The smile that spread across Darcy”s face was like the first rays of sunshine after a storm, radiant and full of hope. Ariel felt her own heart swell with happiness for her friend and sous chef, knowing just how much this meant to him.

”Congratulations, Darcy!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with warmth and sincerity. ”You two are perfect for each other, and I have no doubt that you”ll make each other very happy.”

”I wouldn”t have had the courage to tell her if it wasn”t for your encouragement and support.”

Ariel gave him an affectionate pat on the shoulder, her mind briefly wandering to memories of her own past loves and the lessons they had taught her. She knew she could never change the mistakes she had made, but she was grateful for the opportunity to help guide others as they navigated their own journey through love.

”Life is too short not to take chances on love, Darcy,” she said softly, her gaze focused on the snow-covered ground. ”It”s filled with ups and downs, but in the end, it”s what gives our lives meaning.”

”No matter what happens, I”ll always be grateful for having met Jill and for the love we share.”

“Thanks for helping us dig out, Darcy,” Ariel said, meeting his gaze as they both leaned on the porch railing. ”It means a lot to all of us.”

”Hey, what are friends for?” Darcy replied, his cheeks flushed from both the exertion and the lingering emotions of his earlier conversation with Ariel. ”Besides, I couldn”t let Jill”s boss take all the credit for saving the day.”

Ariel chuckled softly, understanding the unspoken acknowledgment of the love he and Jill shared. ”No, you certainly couldn”t,” she agreed, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

”Alright, everyone, last push!” Carl announced, rallying the group as they picked up their shovels once more, eager to finish the task at hand.

With renewed determination, they dug into the remaining snow, their shovels scraping against the pavement as they unearthed the final car. As the last of the snow was cleared, they stepped back to admire their handiwork, the cars now fully visible and ready to be driven once again.

With every car now uncovered, the group gathered around them, their breaths cloudy in the cold air. Their gloved hands brushed off the remaining snow from windows and hoods, carefully revealing the vehicles beneath.

”Alright, let”s head back to the BB and warm up,” Carl suggested, rubbing his hands together. ”I think we”ve earned ourselves some hot cocoa.”

Ariel took note of the flushed faces around her, the result of both exertion and happiness. The successful clearing of the road had not only removed the physical barrier between them and the outside world but had also created a deeper bond among them all.

The flickering firelight danced on the walls as they entered Cliffside BB, casting a warm and welcoming glow. Ariel felt her heart swell with gratitude for the people around her, their faces cold yet bright with determination. The air inside was alive with the scent of chocolate.

”Ah, it feels so good to be back inside,” Ethan sighed, rubbing his hands together as he headed towards the fireplace.

”Agreed,” Bradford chimed in, peeling off his gloves and joining Ethan by the fire. ”That was quite the workout, but we did it.”

Jill and Darcy exchanged a knowing smile, their love for each other shining through their exhausted expressions. Ariel couldn”t help but feel a pang of happiness for the two of them, their newfound relationship only adding to the sense of unity among the group.

Darcy looked around the cozy room, his eyes searching for a familiar face. ”Hey, where”s Miles?” he asked, concern furrowing his brow.

“Right here.”

Ariel’s head whipped around at the sound of Miles’s voice. He was coming in the back kitchen door, his cheeks bright red and his coat covered in snow. She looked at him with wide eyes, but his own sparkling gaze revealed nothing.

Instead of explaining himself, Miles simply came over, kissed her on the forehead, and said, “It smells great in here—did you guys save me any brunch?”
