Chapter TWENTY SIX
Ariel”s cheeks flushed pink from the chill as she waved goodbye to the last of the wedding guests. Their cars disappeared down the snowy lane, taillights fading into the gray afternoon. She let out a contented sigh, her breath fogging the air.
”What a weekend,” Miles said, slipping an arm around her waist. His touch was warm and familiar.
Ariel nodded, leaning into him. ”It really was lovely having everyone here. And Bradford and Jessica seem so happy.”
As if on cue, the bride and groom emerged from the BB, suitcases in hand. Bradford”s boyish grin was still plastered across his face.
”We can”t thank you both enough for everything,” Jessica gushed, pulling Ariel in for a hug.
Bradford set down his suitcase to shake Miles” hand vigorously. ”Seriously, this place is incredible. And Ariel—” he met her gaze ”—the food was out of this world. Just like I remember.”
Ariel smiled softly at the memory. ”Well, I”m so thrilled you two found each other.” She gave Jessica”s arm an affectionate squeeze. ”You”re welcome back anytime.”
”We”d love it if you could make it down to LA for the wedding this spring,” Jessica said.
”We wouldn”t miss it,” Miles replied.
After a few more hugs and well wishes, Ariel and Miles stood arm in arm, watching the old Jeep disappear down the road. A peaceful silence settled over the snowy landscape.
Ariel turned to Miles, joy sparkling in her eyes. ”Can you believe it? Our first big event at the BB!”
Miles chuckled, planting a kiss on her forehead. ”You were amazing, as always. This is only the beginning, my dear.”
Ariel and Miles stepped back into the warmth of the BB, both flushed from the chill outside. The foyer was cluttered with suitcases and coats from their weekend guests.
”I suppose we should start tidying up,” Ariel said, reluctantly letting go of Miles” hand.
Just then, Darcy emerged from the kitchen, followed by Jill, Katie, and Ethan.
”Chef, let us take care of all this,” Darcy offered. ”You and Miles should go relax.”
Ariel smiled graciously. ”That”s very kind of you all, but I think Miles and I need some time alone.”
She met Miles”s gaze, a flicker of anticipation in her eyes.
”We insist,” Jill chimed in, already gathering coats. ”You two have done so much this weekend. Please, go enjoy your Valentine”s Day together.”
”Nope...” Ariel said firmly.
Katie bounced over to give her mom a quick hug. ”We”ve got this, don”t worry. You and Miles deserve a break.”
Ariel felt a swell of gratitude for her family. But then, she started ushering them towards the door while Miles looked on, amused.
”Shoo now, go on,” Ariel said playfully. ”We”ll see you tomorrow.”
After ensuring they all had rides home, she finally closed the door behind them. A peaceful silence blanketed the BB. She pointed at Ethan and Katie. “Upstairs. Now.”
The pair, giggling, obeyed.
Ariel turned to Miles, eyes sparkling. ”Now...where were we? Oh, yes. I think you were about to tell me where you disappeared to all day. On Valentine’s Day.”
”Ah, my dear, wouldn”t you like to know?” Miles replied playfully, stepping closer and wrapping his arms around her waist.
Ariel raised an eyebrow and gave him a gentle nudge. ”Come on, you”ve been so evasive lately. It”s driving me crazy!”
Miles chuckled and pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. ”I can see that. But it”s all part of my master plan for Valentine”s Day.” He winked at her, further fueling her curiosity.
”You said you had no plan!”
He looked at her steadily.
“Fine,” Ariel sighed, feigning annoyance despite the warmth that Miles” embrace brought to her heart. ”But just remember, I”m not very patient.”
”Which is something I love about you,” Miles replied, suddenly serious. ”And speaking of things we love, I wanted to apologize for our fight last night.”
”Me too,” Ariel murmured, feeling a wave of regret wash over her. ”I”ve been emotional lately. This whole weekend has been a rollercoaster of feelings, and I guess it got the better of me.”
”Understandable,” Miles said softly. ”And I should have been more open with you about my plans. I didn”t mean to add to your stress.”
”Apology accepted,” Ariel whispered, her voice thick with emotion. She looked up into Miles” eyes, which held nothing but love and understanding. ”Truce?”
”Truce,” Miles agreed, sealing their promise with a sweet, lingering kiss that made Ariel”s heart swell with happiness.
As they broke apart, Ariel rested her head on Miles” chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. In that moment, amid the warm glow of the setting sun and the gentle embrace of the man she loved, Ariel felt a sense of peace and contentment that she had been longing for since her return to Endless Harbor. Whatever uncertainties the future held, she knew that they would face them together – as a team, as partners, and as lovers.
”Whatever you have planned for Valentine”s Day,” Ariel said, looking up at Miles with a soft smile, ”I know it”ll be perfect.”
”Only because I”ll be spending it with you,” Miles replied, his eyes filled with warmth and affection.
And as they stood there on the porch of their BB, wrapped in each other”s arms while the sun dipped below the horizon, it was clear that their love story was just beginning.
Suddenly, a loud crash sounded from outside, jolting them apart. They exchanged startled glances.
”What was that?” Ariel hurried to the window, peering out into the gloom. The moon cast the front yard in a dim silvery light, but nothing seemed amiss.
Miles joined her, squinting through the glass. ”Maybe an animal knocked something over?”
”I didn”t think anything could get into the trash cans. The lids are on tight.” A spike of unease shot through Ariel. Something felt off.
Miles touched her shoulder reassuringly. ”I”ll go check it out. Wait here.”
Before she could protest, he grabbed a flashlight and slipped out the front door. Ariel hovered anxiously as the door clicked shut, muffling the sounds of Miles” footsteps crunching through the snowy yard.
She couldn”t shake the ominous feeling that had settled over her. Something wasn”t right. Ariel hurried to the door, her breath clouding in front of her as she stepped outside.
”Miles?” she called softly. Only the winter wind answered, whispering through the bare trees. She pulled her cardigan tighter against the chill.
Where was he? The yard was too quiet, like the very air was holding its breath, waiting. Ariel”s heart hammered in her chest.
”Miles!” Louder this time, fear creeping into her voice. She had to find him.
Ariel hurried across the front yard, her boots sinking into the snow. ”Miles, where are you?”
Just as panic began to set in, she heard his voice. ”Over here!”
She whirled, relief crashing over her at the sight of him by the corner of the house. The flashlight beam danced over something large and dark.
As she drew closer, Ariel gasped. A horse-drawn carriage waited there, adorned with twinkling white lights and festive red bows. The two majestic horses stamped their hooves, their breath fogging the cold night air.
Miles grinned, his eyes crinkling with warmth. ”Surprise! Happy Valentine”s Day, my love.”
”Oh, Miles.” Ariel pressed a hand to her mouth, overwhelmed. ”It”s beautiful. When did you plan this?”
He wrapped an arm around her waist. ”I wanted to do something special, so I booked us a little moonlit carriage ride through town. Only, I wasn’t sure if I could get the carriage here because of the snow, so I walked to town and drove it back here behind Jill and Darcy and the plow.”
Ariel gazed at the carriage, taking in every perfect detail. The plush velvet seats, the gleaming wood, the driver perched with reins in hand. It was like something from a fairytale.
”This is the most romantic thing anyone”s ever done for me,” she said softly.
Miles brushed a tender kiss to her forehead. ”You deserve all of this and more.”
He helped her climb inside before settling in beside her. As the driver clicked the reins, guiding the horses forward, Ariel snuggled against Miles” strong chest. She had never felt so cherished.
The carriage lurched into motion, the steady clip-clop of the horses” hooves echoing through the quiet streets. Ariel rested her head on Miles” shoulder as they passed by the darkened storefronts and quaint homes of their little town.
Above them, the inky sky was dotted with glittering stars. The air held a biting chill, but Ariel felt nothing but warmth curled up against Miles. He wrapped an arm around her, his thumb idly stroking her shoulder.
”This was always my favorite time of year growing up,” Ariel said softly. ”I loved the lights, the coziness, that sense of new beginnings.”
Miles pressed a kiss to her hair. ”I know Endless Harbor hasn”t always felt like home to you. But I”m glad we”re here together now.”
Ariel snuggled closer, overcome with emotion. The carriage ride was perfect - intimate, romantic, everything she could have dreamed of. But more than anything, it meant the world to share this quiet moment with Miles.
In the glow of the streetlamps of downtown Endless harbor, alone in the twilight, his face was gentle, his eyes full of love. The past suddenly seemed far away. Here, now, she had everything she needed - family, purpose, and a man who cherished her completely.
Ariel reached up and cradled Miles” stubbled cheek in her palm. ”Anywhere is home as long as I”m with you.”
Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss under the starry Maine sky. The soft jingle of the horse”s harness and the rhythmic clip-clop of its hooves on the snow-dusted cobblestone streets provided a gentle soundtrack to her contemplative mood. The snowfall earlier in the day had transformed the town into a picturesque scene straight out of a storybook.
As the kiss ended and they settled back into the embrace of the carriage, a thoughtful expression crossed Ariel”s face. She remembered the gift she”d been carrying around with her since their disagreement over Valentine”s Day. Ariel had found something meaningful that transcended the need for grand gestures or expensive presents.
”I have something for you,” Ariel said softly, her voice tinged with excitement and a hint of nervousness. She reached into her coat pocket, her fingers closing around the object.
Miles looked at her with curiosity and warmth in his eyes. ”For me? What is it?”
Carefully, Ariel withdrew her hand to reveal an antique compass. ”I found this in the attic of the inn,” she explained, holding it out to him. The compass was old, its bronze casing worn by the passage of time, but what made it truly unique was the intricate painting on the back. Ariel had lovingly adorned it with a delicate image of The Old Crown Inn, their beloved home and the heart of their shared life.
Miles took the compass in his hands, turning it over to admire the painting. The detail was exquisite, capturing not just the physical likeness of the inn, but the warmth and love it represented. ”This is incredible, Ariel. It’s beautiful.”
Ariel watched his reaction closely, her heart swelling with love. ”I painted it for you,” she said, a soft smile playing on her lips. ”You”re someone who understands the sea and its currents. But no matter how far you roam, I wanted you to have something that always points you back home. To us.”
Miles, visibly moved, looked up from the compass to meet her gaze. ”Ariel, this means everything to me. To know that you”ve put so much thought and love into this... It”s the best gift I could have asked for.”
As the carriage passed through the heart of downtown, Ariel sat back and gazed at the closed shops lining the streets. Their windows, frosted from the cold, displayed the remnants of the day”s activity - quaint bookstores with their reading nooks now empty, charming cafes where chairs were stacked upside down on tables, and boutique shops with elegant dresses and handcrafted goods standing sentinel in the dim light. The warm glow from the street lamps cast a soft, golden hue on the snow, creating intricate patterns of light and shadow on the ground.
The usual bustle of the town was absent, replaced by a peaceful stillness that enveloped everything like a blanket. Snowflakes, delicate and whimsical, continued to drift lazily from the night sky, each one adding to the thick layer of snow that covered the town. The snow muffled sounds, making the world seem hushed and intimate, as if it were holding its breath.
As the carriage turned down a side street, Ariel”s eyes were drawn to the silhouettes of bare trees, their branches etched like fine lace against the dark winter sky. The snow clung to each twig and bough, accentuating their delicate beauty. Here and there, icicles hung from eaves and gutters, glistening in the lamplight like crystal chandeliers.
Further along, the carriage rolled past the town square, where a grand old clock tower stood proudly, its face illuminated by a soft, amber glow. The clock”s hands were frozen in time, as if even they had decided to take a pause and bask in the night”s tranquility. The adjacent park, usually alive with the laughter of children and the chatter of townsfolk, was now a serene expanse of untouched snow, with only the occasional set of footprints breaking its perfect surface.
As the carriage circled back towards the harbor, Ariel could see the boats docked for the night, their masts swaying gently in the breeze. The water of the harbor reflected the moonlight, creating a shimmering pathway that stretched out to the sea. The faint sound of a buoy bell, carried on the wind, added a haunting melody to the night”s ambiance.
Leaning back, Ariel let out a contented sigh, taking in the beauty and serenity of Endless Harbor under its winter mantle. It was a moment of peace and reflection, a rare pause in the rhythm of everyday life. The carriage ride, a simple yet romantic gesture, had given her a new perspective on the town she called home - a reminder that beauty and tranquility could always be found, even in the quietest of moments.
”Do you remember the first time we met?”
Miles chuckled. ”How could I forget? I thought you were adorable.” He brushed a strand of hair from her face. ”But that day changed everything. You walked into my life and turned it upside down in the best way.”
Ariel”s heart swelled. She thought back to that first encounter, never imagining it would lead to this profound love.
”After we started dating, I realized how alike we are,” she said. ”Our values, our dreams, even little things like liking our coffee the same way.”
Miles nodded. ”Two old souls who found each other. I guess it was meant to be.”
The carriage rolled on as Ariel rested her head on Miles” shoulder. She felt incredibly grateful for the series of events that had brought them together. All the years of searching, and her soulmate had been right here in Endless Harbor.
As the horses clopped down the lamp-lit street, Ariel knew she was finally home.
Ariel sighed contentedly as the carriage rolled to a stop outside the cozy BB. Miles helped her down and she took his arm, not quite ready for their magical night to end.
They strolled up the front walk, the crunch of gravel underfoot. Ariel paused to take one last look at the twinkling lights adorning the carriage before it disappeared down the street.
”That was amazing,” she said. ”Thank you for planning such a romantic surprise.”
”Anything for you, my love,” Miles replied, kissing her temple.
It was then that Ariel realized fully— it wasn”t grand gestures or fancy gifts that made her heart flutter. It was the simple, unspoken promise of having Miles by her side forever, through every high and every low, that filled her with an indescribable warmth.
She looked up at him, her gaze filled with a deep affection. ”Miles, tonight was perfect, but do you know what the best part is? It”s knowing that I don”t need any of this to be happy. Just you and me together, that”s more than enough.”
Miles smiled, his eyes reflecting the soft glow of the street lamps. ”Ariel, being with you, seeing the world through your eyes, has been the greatest adventure of my life.”
Ariel felt a profound sense of completeness. The grandeur of the evening would fade into memory, but the feeling of being truly at home with Miles would forever remain in her heart. In the quiet simplicity of their love, they had found an endless harbor of their own, a love where every moment was a gift, and every day was a new adventure to cherish.
They stepped inside Cliffside, welcomed by the warmth of the fireplace. Embers still glowed softly, casting a dim light on the now-empty common room.
A pang of sadness hit Ariel as she pictured the families gathered there just hours before—laughing, singing, celebrating. The weekend had flown by so quickly.
Miles gave her hand a squeeze, as if sensing her thoughts. ”I know I”m going to miss everyone. But we”ll see them again soon.”
Ariel nodded, comforted by his reassurance. She was so grateful to have him by her side as she embarked on this new chapter.
They ascended the creaky staircase to their bedroom on the second floor. Ariel cherished these quiet moments alone together, no distractions, just the music of the wind chimes outside their window.
As Miles pulled her close, Ariel was filled with hope for the future. The memories they”d created here would stay nestled in her heart, guiding her forward.
