Chapter 26 #3
Luc's gaze stays on me. "The students killed in the archive, the guards, Alaric Starling." His voice lowers. "Their spirits will not cross."
The first crack touches the silence inside me. "My father is still here?"
My mother turns toward Luc desperately. "Where?"
"The Hall of Passing, all of them are there." His expression tightens. "But they aren't behaving like spirits. They are standing."
Professor Thorne's eyes sharpen. "Waiting for what?"
Luc looks directly at me. "You."
The room goes cold. Valerius moves closer. "Why?"
"I don't know." Luc shakes his head.
"Then why are you here?" Valerius shoots him a look.
"Because Seren is with them." Luc says.
Every flame gutters. Valerius's Shadowflame reappears instantly.
My mother whispers, "She escaped?"
Luc shakes his head. "No."
His pale eyes don't leave mine. "She died during the night." Valerius turns sharply. Professor Thorne's face empties. My mother gasps.
I stand still. "How?"
Luc swallows. "The old-law sigil around her throat activated after the Masters retreated. It tightened until her heart stopped."
Voss removed a liability or maybe the Ancient Masters did. Seren was used, then discarded. That's what you get when you prove you're worthless.
Professor Thorne grips the chair as if the room is moving. "No." His voice is barely audible.
Luc looks at him. "I tried to hold her spirit. She refused."
Thorne's face folds inward. The woman who betrayed him. The student he still tried to save. Dead.
Valerius watches me, waiting with desperation. "Valentina?"
I look at him. "What?"
"Seren is dead." Valerius repeats what Luc said.
"I heard, and that's what you get when you betray the people that love you."
His expression becomes horrified. The bond reaches for me one more time. A memory presses through it. Seren entering my room with breakfast. Her gasp at seeing us together. Her laughter. Her arms around me. Her voice saying, You're still Val. You're still mine too.
For one second, something shifts behind the locked door, a sound, a girl crying, far away. Then the sovereign heart tightens. Silence returns.
Valerius feels the flicker. His eyes widen. "There." He grabs my face between his hands. "There you are." I stare at him. His thumbs brush my cheeks. "Do it again," he whispers.
"Do what?" I ask.
"Feel it." He whispers.
"I can't." I say.
"Yes, you can. I felt you." He nods repeatedly.
"You felt a residual memory response." I say.
"No." His forehead presses to mine. "It was you."
The contact sends his hope crashing into the bond. My mark drinks it. Cold fire spills up my throat. I pull away. Valerius's hands fall. The hope in his face dies so quickly that even the silent place notices.
Luc looks between us. "We need to go to the Hall of Passing."
Professor Thorne lifts his head. "Why?"
"Because Seren is holding the dead here." Luc answers.
My mother wipes her face. "For what purpose?"
Luc's gaze turns toward the window. Morning light has begun spreading across Arcana, pale and grey over the broken towers. "She keeps repeating one sentence." I wait, everyone does. Luc looks back at me. His voice lowers. "She says the battle was not the invasion."
The room stills. "What was it?" Thorne asks.
Luc's face turns grim. "A coronation."
My sovereign mark pulses once and hard. The old wards around the room ignite.
White-gold symbols race over the walls. The glass in the windows turns black, reflecting not the bedroom, but Arcana Academy from above.
The towers. The courtyards. The shattered east archive.
Then beneath them, deep in the foundation, points of pale fire begin appearing.
Hundreds of Remnants below us.
My mother staggers. Valerius steps to my side, all grief forced behind a wall now, Shadowflame ready. Professor Thorne whispers, "They used the gate to seed the foundations."
Luc nods. "The first battle was a distraction."
The points beneath the academy begin moving. Crawling upward, through walls, through wards, toward sleeping students. Alarms begin screaming in the corridors. Not bells, voices, students. A distant explosion shakes the lower observatory. Dust falls from the ceiling.
Valerius reaches for my hand.
I look down at it. His palm open. His wrist scarred by old law. The boy I remember loving, offering himself to the version of me who can't return it. I take his hand not because I need comfort because together, we are stronger.
He knows the difference. It breaks something in his face. Still, he holds on.
Professor Thorne forces himself upright. "We evacuate the dormitories."
My mother turns toward the door. "Professor Vale, alert every branch master. Luc, get to the Hall of Passing. Find out what Seren knows." Luc nods.
Thorne looks at me. "Valentina, you stay here."
"No." I say.
His mouth tightens. "That was not a request."
"Then it was a wasted sentence." I say.
Valerius turns slightly toward me. "You aren't ready."
"I'm more controlled than I have ever been." I say.
"That's what frightens me." He admits.
I look at him for a minute. I step toward the corridor. Valerius blocks me. For one moment, we stand face-to-face. His grief hidden. My humanity locked away. The bond between us bruised but unbroken.
"Move," I say.
"No." He doesn't move a muscle.
"Students are dying." I say.
"And you don't care." He say. The words are meant to hurt. They fail.
"I care about the strategic loss." I say.
His face twists. "That isn't caring."
"It's enough to act." I say.
"No." He steps closer. "Not enough for me."
I study him. "What do you want?"
His eyes shine. "You."
The answer is immediate, not Starborne, not the sovereign heart, not the weapon... Me. The locked place inside my chest trembles, once. A crack no wider than a breath. Then a scream echoes from the corridor. A child, young, terrified. The crack seals.
I release Valerius's hand. Cold Starfire forms around my fingers. He looks at it. Then at me. "I can't give you what you want," I say. "But I can kill what's coming."
I move past him. This time, he lets me, not because he agrees, because the scream comes again.
Valerius falls into step beside me. Thorne follows, injured and furious.
My mother and Professor Vale hurry behind us.
Luc disappears toward the Hall of Passing, his dark cloak vanishing into smoke at the opposite stair.
The corridor outside is chaos.
Students run barefoot through the observatory halls. Professors shout evacuation orders. Wards flare and fail. Black cracks spread across the ceiling as pale hands begin pushing through stone from below.
A Remnant tears itself from the wall ahead of us. Its faceless head turns. Its mouth ignites. Valerius's Shadowflame rises but I am faster. I lift one hand. Cold white fire touches the creature. No explosion... The Remnant simply ceases to exist. Ash falls at my feet. Everyone stops.
Students, professors. my mother, thorne, even Valerius.
I look at my hand, no shaking, no exhaustion, no emotion feeding the flame. Only intention. The sovereign heart hasn't weakened me, it removed the limit.
Another Remnant crawls from the ceiling, I erase it. Then another, gone. Valerius stares at me. Not because he's afraid of what I might do to him, because he's afraid of how little doing it costs me.
The alarm bells begin ringing across Arcana. The real war has started. I walk toward it. Cold Starfire burning around my hands. My father is dead. Seren is dead. My heart is locked somewhere even Valerius can't reach and for the first time in my life, nothing can hurt me enough to make me hesitate.
Behind me, Professor Thorne whispers the truth none of them want to say aloud. "Gods help whoever stands in her way."
I look down the darkened corridor as the walls split open and Remnants begin pouring through. The gods had their chance. Now they can watch me.
